      When you're trying to decide which member of a comedy duo is which, just watch for a short time to determine which one is the straight man. The straight man sets up all the jokes, the comic gets the laughs it's an old tradition in show business that the straight man's name is lisred first, as in this case Abbott and Costello. Laurel and Hardy. Burns and Allen. Rowan and Martin.

    Lou Costello, the small one, was a wonderful man. He built a youth center for underprivileged kids in LA and funded other charities as well. He unfortunately died too early in my opinion. They were experts at this type of humor. Don't need the alcohol to enjoy it....and you notice not a single 4 letter word or sex joke in the whole routine. It is just funny. Not just written well, but the timing of the routine is so perfect. This is real talent.

  • @joconnell8145
    @joconnell8145 4 ปีที่แล้ว +106

    Interesting trivia: This bit was NEVER rehearsed and it was NEVER performed the same way twice. They wrote a basic premise and just improvised on top of that premise. Contrary to what several people have said Abbott & Costello were not inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame, but this bit is played on loop throughout the Hall for people to hear. ALSO... don't know if ANYONE else mentioned it but Bud Abbott is the tall one and Lou Costello is the short one.
    A brief synopsis...Abbott is EXPLAINING the team and what positions they play, there aren't any base runners. Costello is the confused one, asking the team members names. It's all a clever play on words.

    • @don1965don
      @don1965don 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your right "Abbott & Costello were not inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame". But they presented to the Baseball hall of fame a copy of the routine. From the baseball(dot)org website:
      "We just finished a picture about eight weeks ago, ‘Dance with Me, Henry,’ for United Artists,” said Costello, clutching a mounted gold record of “Who’s on First?” “And now we’re here in New York, being with you and all the wonderful people you have here, we have a wonderful plaque that’s going to be presented to the Baseball Hall of Fame."
      “That’s a solid gold record that actually plays and will go to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.” Abbott added, “And we’re very, very proud and happy that you’ve accepted this.” Speaking for the Hall of Fame, Kerr said, “Lou and Bud, I’m very happy to accept this on behalf of the millions who have seen and heard this. And I’m especially glad to have it so that the future generations may enjoy this as much as we have.”

They had movies, radio, and reading.They comunicated. we met at bars and clubs . I have seen great stuff on You tube that people will say 30 years from now the people had higher attention spans back then. I saw a 9 year old opera singer. You got kids doing Comedy bits now. This is pure word tennis. It's comedy that's about timing and reaction. Abbott (the tall guy) is the straight man - his entire performance is on an even keel, and he feeds the situation to Costello. Costello, on the other hand, is the reactor - everything he says and does is a reaction to what Abbott tells him. His performance goes up and down constantly, from confusion to anger to wonder to despair. And the joke - that Costello never understands these are _names_ - is tossed back and forth like a ball in a game. This is master class comedy right here, because these guys understand how much of "funny" is how the people involved _react_ to what's going on. (Try to imagine what this bit would sound like if Costello spoke the same way Abbott does, calm and friendly and sure.) Glad you enjoyed it!

    Lou Costello (the goofy one) was a riot with the innocence he played in their comedy act. He was actually a pro boxer and a stuntman before becoming a comedian. Bud Abbott (the one with the mustache) was the straight man of the act but had a good sense of humor himself. They made something like 35-45 movies as well as had a successful TV Show (2 if you count their 13 episode guest-host run of the Colgate Comedy Hour) and even had a cartoon for years. In recent years Legend Films has been colorizing many classic films and shows and done a phenomenal job of it. They smartly include a fully remastered black and white print so both old-time fans (who prefer the black and white) and new fans (who prefer their shows/movies in color) both get something beautiful to watch. They have a set of Abbott and Costello that is fantastic to see and it only runs $10-$15 for like 6-12 hours worth of clips, shows and a movie or two. If you can't tell, they're my favorite comedy team of all time :D .

      I remember watching the Animaniacs the day it premiered. I was about 20 years old and the speed and slapstick comedy delivery of that first episode was hilarious. Growing up with stuff like Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, and the old Scooby Doo before they PC-cancelled the majority of it was not even enough to prepare me for the sheer ridiculousness that was Animaniacs. All future irreverent cartoons owe their existence to Animaniacs.

It takes special talent to be the one who sets the pace and PROVIDES the timing, and never break character or laugh while the funnyman is being zany. Lou Costello’s talent as a funnyman demanded a quality straightman. Bud Abbott rose to the occasion every single time.
