Anatomy of a Fall had the single best "cut" of any movie this year. The moment where we abruptly cut from the footage of the argument to the audio being played in the courtroom as soon as the fight escalated to violence literally took my breath away. It was like a really well executed and built-up jump scare in the form of an edit. Not the first category you'd think of for the movie, but that particular scene was THE moment of the movie for me so I'm very stoked for the editing nomination.
I hope it beats Oppenheimer at the Oscars for film editing. I think Anatomy of a Fall has the best editing from last year. I don’t think Oppenheimer should have won especially considering I think that movie should be 30 minutes shorter.
totlly agree. This movie is a MASTERPIECE! I watched it twice!!
@@laurajones1773it won’t
Honeslty, the best cinematography is in Poor Things. It's way more experimental, more varied, interesting, and above it all, beautiful.
Won’t win though
It's disappointing that my favourite film of the year, Past Lives, under-performed at the Oscars and would likely go home empty-handed.
They put it in best director becase this long category 10 nomnatin and put it in screenplay becase have two categorty10 but clear they dont like it
Personally I think it’s pretty overrated.
@@oldchicken2 I agree with you, Past Lives is overrated.
Past lives? I didn't see no magic in it. It couldn't have been more mediocre
@@marrmart7690 Best Picture, you mean? That has ten slots. Best Director does not.
Yes!!! From your mouth to God’s ear, Cillian Murphy for the Oscar. We have watched the film 6 times since July and every single time we are (wait for it) blown away. The performance is nuanced, he draws you in with that incredible eye-acting, and we love to watch how he expresses all the conflict, arrogance, naïveté of the man with just his facial expressions. If he doesn’t get the win, I’ll tear my hair out!
just thought it was funny that I’ve also seen it six times 😂 agree with everything you said

Love Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers
Me too
All cast even diroctor
homie had no material and killed it. way better character story than oppenheimer.
Me too! I am rooting for him!
If Emma Stone wins, she’ll have more Oscar than Kate Winslet, she’ll have the same best actress win as Meryl Streep and more than Natalie, Juliane, Charlize, Nicole. What amazing wins in such a comparatively shorter career. I am a huge fan.
It would certainly be something. I am rooting for her!
And she will have two lead actress Oscars will Cate Blanchett only has one lead actress Oscar.

Colman Domingo is wonderful in a so-so film. In another, less competitive year, I think he would win. But the category is very crowded with good performances.
I saw "Rustin" and his performance was not that special or that good. But I did really love his performance in "the Color Purple"
If it's any consolation, he has an amazing movie coming out next year with critics believing he will get a nomination and maybe win
He's predicted to be a front runner in 2025 for sing sing
believe me, he has "won" by receiving this nomination, to win now would not really be helpful for his career advancement as we have seen in the past.
Emma Stone was above everyone else! Not just this year! Mind blowing ❤
Here’s my ballot:

It has been a year later and I am still mad at Jamie Lee Curtis winning best supporting actress last year. Robert Downey Jr is winning best supporting actor and DJR is winning best supporting actress and it is a toss up in best actor and a three way tie in best actress. What if Annette Benning win at SAG in a surprise upset win for Nyad just to add chaos to the Awards season
Bring the chaos!
I could see a similar thing with JLC happening for Annette. She's been campaigning the hardest out of the nominees too
I think her co-star should have won last year. Stephanie Hsu delivered a more complex performance than Jamie Lee Curtis in EEAAO.
@@laurajones1773or even Hong Chau tbh.
Emma Stone is at the same place as Meryl Streep was when she won for " Sophie's Choice " , only few years after her first win for " Kramer vs Kramer " . And Frances McDormand in 2018 and 2021 , too !
And that's why I have a complete trust in her for the win !
Seven years have passed since " La La Land " came out ...
I agree with the Cillian vote. Happy he's getting the recognition he deserves.
I think he's been better in many other things. He's a great actor, but Oppy didn't register that much for me.
his portrayal was inconsistent, confusing, and wooden. i left the movie more confused about oppenheimer. paul giamatti ftw

What was I made for just won two Grammys including the prestigious Song of the Year! 📯📯
Also,Oppenheimer won the Best Score Grammy. 📯
Yup, I wouldn't bet against these nominees in both musical categories.
I like your prediction for Best Actor-Cillian Murphy, who really is brilliantly potraying Oppenheimer which I think is a v difficult job to do. Kudos to Cillian Murphy & to you.👍👏
I’d love to see Paul Giamatti win an Oscar one day for a role that feels completely new. The Holdovers just felt totally in his wheelhouse of his usual bag of tricks. It didn’t feel challenging or interesting or different. He’s great in it like he is in everything but I wasn’t blown away. I found Dominic Sessa to be the showstopper & Da’Vine Joy Randolph to have the incredible storyline.
I think Cillian Murphy is unmatched this awards season. No contest! How he hasn’t been sweeping is baffling to me. The level of commitment he gave to Oppenheimer was extraordinary. He carried the film, he embodied the person he was playing & he gave the performance of the decade while doing so. His acting was top tier. Never seen anything like it. Beyond impressed & haven’t been able to shake it. Give him the Oscar!!!
very true- I came out of that movie thinking "Dominic Sessa is a star". He was so natural, incredible that it is his first movie. What a start!
I audiance dont watch paul jiamatii fims before he will amaze them in the holdovers
Maybe he repeat it but he make it so good in good film
Performance of the decade is a bit much. The decade has only just begun.

I think it’s becoming painfully obvious that the Academy needs to add a Best Female Director award.
Females have directed some good looking, entertaining, and intriguing films over the past year.
@@Argeaux2 I stand by what I said. Also Cillian has been around for the past decade + more. He’s one of the most versatile, impressive actors of his generation. I think his performance in Oppenheimer will stand the test of time & be regarded as one of the greats. To me especially.
I really don’t get what I said had anything to do with female directors that you’ve gone on about but as a woman I am all for more female directors but the line up this year is incredibly impressive both male & female. It was a great year for films.
@@Argeaux2it’s not best female director, it’s best director no gender necessary
It has to be Emma Stone. She blew me out of the theater back wall. It's hands down a breathtaking every scene performance
I don't get the Paul thing. It's not exactly a stretch for him. I would put Bradley and Jeffrey on top, with Cillian winning.
Also, Cillian Murphy is playing a real life Genius Brilliantly.
Sandra Huller gets my vote.
I agree.
I know it won't happen but I just want Danielle Brooks to win so bad. She is such a wonderful actress and I just want her to have a moment. But at least she is in the race!
She was amazing but in bad film..i love how she love the oscar..if she win she will so happy.her rection in nomnation 😂
American Fiction definitely deserves Best Adapted Screenplay IMO, I thought it was an extremely witty and insightful script
Barbie was kind of a mess to me, especially after they return to Barbieland
Agreed. The movie went downhill after the return to Barbieland
I have to agree about Barbie. Still hoping it wins as kind of a consolation prize
@ it can win for production design, costumes etc. That’s all it should’ve been nominated for TBH
American Fiction is terrific.
Strongly disagree with the Killers of the Flower Moon editing comment. That movie moves flawlessly, and lasts exactly what it needs to last.
With regard to the acting categories, so far, best supporting actress is the only one I've seen each performance. I agree that this race is between Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Emily Blunt, but I also really enjoyed the heart of Jodie Foster's performance. I would probably vote for Da'Vine Joy Randolph. I've seen most of the supporting actor performances, and though I agree Robert Downey, Jr will win, my favorite performance was Ryan Gosling in Barbie. I also really loved Annette Benning in Nyad, and I'd like to see her win, but to be fair, hers is the only lead actress performance I've seen so far. I loved Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer and Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers. I'd love to see them tie, but since a tie in the acting categories has only happened twice (I think), Cillian Murphy will probably edge out Paul Giamatti.
i love your videos, thank you for your content❤
Love the video, and enjoy hearing your takes! Couldn't disagree more with your cinematography pick, though. I think I'd rank Oppenheimer in last among the five, it's shot in the same way as many of Nolan's films, standard medium close-ups throughout and very few shots that particularly impressed me. I actually prefer Maestro's cinematography (that oner during the conducting scene, or that first black and white shot of Bernstein's silhouette before tracking him into the concert hall are two stunning shots in that film).
I think I'd personally go with Poor Things, its approach to filming Emma Baxter, with its usage of fish-eye lenses for example, I thought displayed some of the more innovative cinematography choices of the year.
I loooooooved Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things. Glad you also liked him. Such an entertaining performance. He stole the the show in the second half of the movie. These kind of crazy comedic parts should be nominated more often. He put so many smiles on my face.
Cillian Murphy deserves one! 😊
Love your videos Brian! You're my go to for all Oscar info and new movies - keep up the great work!

I'm so torn in regard to Best Actress - I really liked the Gladstone performance and think it would be the worthier win (yeah PC choice whatever but the Oscars has always been as much a popularity/vibes contest as a pure 'best' assessment) but there's no denying that Stone's performance is just stratospheric and she totally carries the film, being the centre of attention for 90% of the runtime, unlike Gladstone's lesser onscreen time. If only Gladstone had been nominated in Best Supporting Actress, that's a more suitable category for her role and she'd be a shoo-in (sorry, Da'Vine). I do agree that Stone's recent win might handicap her but on a pure comparison of which role is more demanding/integral to the film/distinctive then Stone should have it in the bag - honestly, I didn't think that she deserved it for the overrated La La Land, I would've preferred Negga or Huppert, and if Stone hadn't won it then, no Academy voter in good conscience could deny her their vote this time.

Emma deserve this Oscar SOOOO MUCH , for me there is any competion. But like you I'm scared that they punished her to be so good and already win an Oscar...
Lily Gladstone win because...
@@ruthlounsbury4024 Her performance was great. I didn't care for "Poor Things" at all.
Yeah! I'm looking forward to hearing your choices. Though I think I can guess your Best Picture choice.
When thinking cinematography, I think of the lighting, lens choice, composition, angles, color grading, artistic flare and overall aesthetic. So for me, that’s Poor Things.
For editing I think pacing, tension building, narrative, cohesion, sentiment, emotional buildup, overall delivery of the story. For me, Oppenheimer falls short in several of those. It could have been way tighter. For me Anatomy of a Fall delivers there. Good editing delivers a well told story that moves.

I don't think the Academy has an issue awarding actresses twice in a few years. Jodie Foster did it easily. Katherine Hepburn won back to back Oscars. Meryl Streep won twice in only 4 years. I think Emma Stone is joining them.
that dance number from 'Poor Things'- you show in costumes- @4 minutes in... seems VERY similiar to the dance scene Yorgos and Emma did in 'The Favourite'

So, yet another Nolan snub? You knew darn well this time it wasn't going to happen...LOL However i do agree with most other picks, especially Ruffalo! RDJ's performance in Oppenheimer was way overrated and he wasn't nearly as good as a support to lead actor/actress in his movie as Ruffalo was in Poor Things!...I feel like it was just another "Honorary" oscar, rather than deserved one, similar to how Di Caprio has won his a few years back...
I would love when Siskel and Ebert did this show!!

I personally couldn't stand "Poor Things", but I just might be the only one who didn't care for it. It is going to win a lot of awards.
I finally got to see Past Lives the other day - such a great movie! To be honest, Teo Yoo‘s performance blew me away, such an incredible, subtle play, just with very little gestures and his eyes he tells so much, so so good. I wish he got a nomination too (just somewhere!!!)!

Did you watch Robot Dreams?
Just watched The Iron Claw and you were right, Zac Efron had to be nominated here😢 it's a beautiful, heartbreaking performance
or a heartbreaking film for that matter
Yes, he was great in it.
I find myself agreeing with most of your choices. I would (Boringly perhaps) give Oppenheimer best picture and RDJ best supporting though. I think it's wrong that the Holdovers wasn't in production design, but would agree with Poor Things to win. I am a long way from Saltburn for screenplay though it's a great cast with good performances in a poorly written story.
8:15 I would’ve nominated “The society of the snow” for Best Score. What a beautiful work. Also a really difficult movie to work with music when a single mistake could’ve easily ruined the whole feel of it.

I think the boy and the heron is winning. That movie is so amazing

When in doubt, I’ll go with The Boston Pops Conductor Emeritus JW but I just love Oppenheimer, Oppenheimer for Life 🙌❤️
I agree about Robert Downey JR performance not being the best in this year’s lineup of best supporting actor. He’s 4th in my list too. For me this was the big category to award Barbie for Ryan Gosling’s masterful comedic performance ❤

Brian, I haven't written in a while, but you are killing the game right now. So happy for you. I have STILL not gotten over Glenn Close not winning when the amazing Olivia Coleman won. For this year I will NEVER get over Greta Lee not getting the nomination. That movie was so quiet, compelling and POWERFUL and between Greta and Teo and the actor who played her husband in my mind ALL should have been nominated! That last scene will NEVER leave me. It was perfection. Can't WAIT to see how you did this season! Joseph from the US
Past life amazing acting😍
But normal love story and i think academy ignor asian film becase they give oscar last year to every whare all it once
Academy invite glen glose in honrary oscar this year with angela baset they reward angella
I think another undeserving career Oscar win in recent years besides Jamie Lee Curtis’s Oscar win is Laura Dern’s Oscar win in Marriage Story from a few years ago. I hate that win. I think it’s even more undeserving than Jamie Lee Curtis’s win because she starred as a despicable and hateable divorce lawyer. Not to mention, there was nothing special to her performance in that film. Not to mention I was annoyed she won an Oscar for that film yet the best female supporting performance of that year Zhao Szhuzen from The Farewell wasn’t even nominated.
I swear Poor Things better be AWESOME! Because I haven’t seen it yet and it seems like everyone is just gushing over it

It could be recency bias but that costumes in poor things were much more memorable and unique to me than the ones in Barbie which although great were kind of predictable
It’s weird how academy awards aren’t 100% merit based. They’re considering if you’re due for one or you already had your turn. There are also things like diversity considerations. A video breaking down all factors would be interesting.
Just like any category, score shouldn’t be chosen based on whether you like to listen to it outside the film. It should be about the most effective score. To me, it’s no contest. Poor things, while not beautiful, is so perfect for augmenting every single scene in the film.
People picking Holdovers and Barbie for Best Picture …😮 😳
Best Picture: The Society of the Snow.
Oppenheimer was my favorite this year. I would definitely say Anatomy of a Fall was my #2 🎉🎉🎉
Which original work was the Barbie screenplay adapted from?
Everyone just think about that, for a moment.
There is no clearer example of removing a chance for a female director to be recognised in another category.
It was based on characters from Mattel. Whether they were toys or not doesn’t matter, because they still count as characters, the same sequels are always adapted screenplays despite being original stories. And I’m really not sure what point you’re trying to make here given how multiple women are included in the Best Original Screenplay nominations.
I’ve been thinking that too, i thought best adapted had to come from a book, film, comic, radio show etc. To me it seems like a completely original screenplay as the story is new
with supporting actor, for me it'd be deniro and gosling as my top choices
Past lives, like Tár last year, will be consired an all-timer in the years to come.
I look forward to your videos every time, Brian! I too loved Saltburn and it's disappointing it didn't get in above the line... That said, I think Emma, Paul, Da'Vine and RDJ for acting, Nolan and Oppenheimer have it in the bag. Screenplays Barbie and Past Lives. Totally agree about Yorgos - perhaps his next project with Emma will be the one! Keep up the great work, you are absolutely the best at what you do. Cheers from Australia!
Best Actor isn’t difficult. It’s either Paul or Cillian.
The fact you didn't say one single name means it's not that easy
Which is why it's difficult 😂
Best performance is soooo Cillian Murphy. Giamatti will get an Oscar when he’s in a movie like Sideways.
*Willem DeFoe
hoping for Sandra Huller to win the Oscar, she is phenomenal in Anatomy of fall...and I've seen poor things & killers of the flower moon too...and for me Sandra has more depth in her performance compare to the other two lead actress Emma & Lily.
Sandra Hüller is a gift to acting. The Real deal.

YES YES YES for Sound Design going to ZOI!!! And 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 for GMO for Visual Effects!!! Although I understand the raves for the Oppenheimer score, for me personally it kinda actually ruined the film for me … not even half way thru, I was soooo fed up with the absolutely constant impending drama drama drama of the score that is really passed me off and totally took me out of the film!! I found KOTFM actually “felt” less long than Oppenheimer despite being almost 30min longer!!
The fact that McNamara stripped the novel from its framing devices, that allowed the reader to always be questioning what they're reading and from whose perspective, speaks volumes regarding his approach to the film + the male gaze and I personally would hate to see a win for him. I'm excited that Lanthimos is reteaming with Filippou for Kinds of Kindness and I hope McNamara quietly goes back to his disney films.
I dont get what people see in past lives....i have no clue
Its the boy and the heron, and that is not even close.
Agree with best picture. Past lives is my favorite.
