The minute I saw America Ferrera's monologue in Barbie, I thought of Beatrice Straight's supporting actress win in Network. It is key to look at the function of both performances. In Network, Beatrice's performance is integral to the plot. So much, that Alan Heim (editor of Network) stated that the performance was originally later in the movie, but it did not have the emotional impact so he moved her performance to earlier in the movie. Beatrice's performance makes the audience feel the depth of what William Holden (her husband in Network) is throwing away by abandoning her for Diana (Faye Dunaway character in the movie. Her nom wasn’t all that surprising. If Laura Dern can win an Oscar for a similar monologue, then Ferrera getting nominated in a weak year for supporting actress certainly wasn’t out of reach.

We were all surprised she got the nomination but so happy she did!!! When I heard her name I almost shouted out loud. She was wonderful in "real women have curves". Oscar are sometimes about career recognition and in this case it was about time.
Yeah no big surprises but a few happy hopefullys got in!! Me too I was particularly happy Annette got in, especially after I heard people say she was an outside chance because her character, Diana Nyad , was not "likeable"!!! 🙄
Personally I think she was nominated more for delivering an extremely well-written monologue rather than for her actual performance. I would have preferred Julianne Moore in her spot, but America is so charismatic that it's still fun to see her be nominated!
Well there’s the thing. I’ve noticed a lot of “great acting” compilations generally tend to be people yelling or being a little over the top. Quieter and subtler performances often get looked over. I guarantee that Lily Gladstone’s nomination came a lot from that great cry she lets out after the explosion in Killers of the Flower Moon rather than her whole performance (I loved her work in that movie by the way) and if you can deliver a whole monologue convincingly and seemingly impromptu then that’ll get you some major clout.
After watching this video, it makes me think, if America Ferrera could win. This seems like Jamie Lee Curtis last year. Like I'm happy if she wins, but that makes yout think.
No way and if she does it will not age well. Davine gave a full on character who appeared in the majority of the movie. To Deny her would NOT be a good look for the Oscars. Her nomination is her win
Guys 😅 you couldn’t defend her nom “she showed up to do her performance, did nothing more, nothing less..” “what does it mean she deserves”… well.. to make a work which deserves the accolade, it doesn’t
It is an extremely stacked year for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. There are sooo many great 2023 films. I agree with this video and I am very excited America Ferrera was recognized with a nomination. Shout out to other outstanding actresses this year that I adore: Greta Lee, Margo Robbie, Natalie Portman, Taraji P. Henson.
When there is chaos in supporting Actress race and many contenders are coming as a possible sole acting noms in a non best picture films, usually there is a lazy voting, name checking that happens and someone from most seen film gets in. For an example in 2012 Maggie Smith for Marigold Hotel(SAG), Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy(SAG, Globes), Ann Dowd(BFCA) and Judi Dench for Skyfall (BAFTA) were fighting for the last spot and then Jackie Weaver comes in for the most seen film. Same happened to Ferrera who was in most seen Barbie, Marina de Tavira in best picture frontrunner, etc.
I would’ve rather julianne moore or rosamund pike but she deserved her nom!! one thing you forgot to mention (like andrea last year) is she did A LOT of private screening with famous friends, q&a etc that ALWAYS helps
Personally, I don't think her monologue was enough to get her a nomination. I look to Viola Davis's Doubt, Laura Dern's Marriage Story, and Michael Stuhlbarg in Call Me By Your Name as gold standards for how monologue delivery can be pivotal to a supporting role. America's was fine but came off as a bit preachy and not noteworthy. In a stronger year, I don't think she would have gotten a nomination.

I would NEVER nominate her for this role. This is beyond ridiculous. This could be played by anyone else...but Julianne Moore was incredible in May December
Such an uninspiring nomination. So many other deserving actresses that should of gotten over her. Also, feels weird how Oscar voters will vote on something just because of a speech at an awards show, instead of like the actual performances. Honestly makes the honour of being nominated seem less special
There’s no specialness to it whatsoever anyway. People get nominated because they campaign. The awards don’t go to who gave the best performance, they go to who shelled out the most dough to win it. And anyway, name one more deserving actress?
@@jaidynr87 well I’m glad you gave some examples, and I haven’t seen most of those movies so I’ll have to take your word (but I have seen Saltburn and Ferrari and being brutally honest I still think Ferrera was better than both of them, no disrespect to either party) but I still disagree with the stance that her nomination is “uninspiring”. Also Sandra Huller was nominated for Best Actress, and while it’s not exactly uncommon for an actor to be nominated twice in the same year (Al Pacino got lucky with it) I can see that playing against her when you can only pick five.
I would say director was a bigger disappointment than lead actress. Like you said the race for lead actress was so stacked this year and all the women nominated totally deserved it
She got the nomination because she had a speechy monologue in the movie. Margot Robbie did not get it because she did not have that speechy monologue. The other speechy monologue belonged to Barbie's maker. The movie's lack of focus worked for Ferrara, and not for Robbie. I actually hate speechy monologues in movies. It usually means they did not tell a good enough story to get their message across.
Honestly i would not be mad if she wins the oscar, about time she gets her flowers, and i liked her portrayal of a mother wanting to reconnect with her daughter but not knowing how and a mother tired of women being underappreciated
I was all here for her nomination. I’ve loved her since the Dcom Gotta kick it up. And here in Barbie she really represents the every woman in such a simple and organic way!
She didn't deserved that nomination!!! Julianne Moore, Rachel McAdams, Rosamund Pike, or Penélope Cruz were soooo much better than that weak performance of America Ferrera.
She honestly had arguably the most iconic scene in the movie. When I think of this movie that’s always the scene I think back to. Although Robbie had memorable scenes, they don’t feel as iconic and her acting probably hasn’t had that ‘wow’ moment that stuck to voters minds as ferrera’s did
I’ll be honest: I think a big part of the reason is because of politics (feminist agenda)not to mention Margot Robbie couldn’t make it cuz there was too much competition so they had to fit a female actress nom from Barbie
I think Robbie missed just due to her campaigning more as a producer than an actress, and genre bias. It seems that the academy is incapable of nominating more than one largely comedic performance in the Lead Category.
@@poett8875 nah I’ll be honest again She doesn’t make the cut for me the competition is far too high this yr for leading actress Apart from being the pretty girl who plays Barbie Her performance wasn’t special at all imo Greta Lee did a far better performance than her and missed out which says a lot about the competition
@@Glory-Compassno it doesn’t. Greta Lee never stood a chance. There’s no way a subtle and quiet performance was going to make it into the final five for Lead Actress. Once she missed BAFTA, it was all over for her. Robbie got all four pre coursers and is in a top five best picture contender. So she was leagues above Lee, Portman, Barrino etc. But since Emma Stone was the comedic performance that was already in the category, it left no room for another.
@@poett8875 you don’t get my point fully so let me explain A lot of Margot Robbie fans need to understand that she wasn’t nominated because if we’re being honest her performance wasn’t good enough for an Oscar compared to the Nominees, Her Character was too one-dimensional ,a lot of the comedic jokes did not land well and the character wasn’t inspiring or interesting at all for a lot of ppl like me,there’s really nothing special about her performance she’s just the stereotypical pretty girl who played Barbie and this is not just my opinion. And no Greta Lee didn’t make it probably because she’s an actress with low status, popularity and fame in the industry(both Lily Gladstone and Sandra Huller’s performances were quiet and subtle this yr) Think about this Scenario:If u swapped the roles between Robbie and Lee I think everyone would be screaming for Robbie to win the whole thing Even you would agree don’t you? Let’s be real please
@@Glory-Compass a lot of what you said said is still opinion based. Saying Robbie’s performance isn’t anything special is completely subjective. I don’t get the argument that she just plays the “stereotypical pretty Barbie girl.” She has to do a lot of different things in one role, by being comedic and dramatic at the same time which is not easy to do. She had the hardest role to pull off in the entire movie. If she was bad then the entire movie just doesn’t work. She missed because it’s not the type of performance the Oscar’s like to nominate in Lead, which is why Bening got in. It’s the same type of performance that always does. As for Greta Lee, her being low status shouldn’t be an excuse. Paul Mescal wasn’t all that known but he scored a nomination for best actor last year. Maybe the argument you’re using for Robbie could apply to Lee too. Maybe her performance just wasn’t good enough🤷🏽♂️
All this because of one single monologue. Regarding Annette Bening + Jodie Foster, they got the nods because of their status as Hollywood veteran and former Oscar winners. AMPAS always rate legacy picks higher. 😂🤣
She to me is at my top 3 of the category, only behind Da'Vine and Danielle While to many she has one scene, i do believe she has more to do with more suttle acting being the human conection of the film and that one scene she has to me is better than other nominees, like Emily Blunt who also has pretty much one scene is fine, but America kills it In the hands of a lesser actress that monologue takes out the audience for being to "woke"... But she gives it feeling, humanity and strugle I'm glad she got in
She totally deserves the recognition, finally she's getting more noticed after Barbie. She also played my favourite character in How To Train Your Dragon!
America Ferrera should not have been nominated in my opinion. Then again Jamie Lee Curtis should have never been nominated for EEAAO. But that is politics and campaigning and spending money on campaigns matter more than the actual performance such as Laura Dern in Marriage Story, Laura Dern in Wild, etc.
@@rainbowsandlove right, that’s a bit of a conundrum. I guess I have an expectation of a nominee just giving a more interesting performance. I didn’t think her performance was anything special really.
@@D.S.handle but you said that you hadn’t seen anything besides Oppenheimer, so if you’re going by just those clips, this doesn’t display the breadth of her role. It really is worth a watch!
WatchMojo did their take on why Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were "snubbed". "Why Greta Gerwig SHOULDN'T Have Been Nominated for Barbie": th-cam.com/video/8Ow4y4NPgRo/w-d-xo.html
All these reasons, plus the fact that she has consistent played strong, empowering Latina(x) roles and I’m sure the Latino/Hispanic actors in the branch helped propel her as well. The more representation the better.
I still find it weird that America Ferrera gets an Oscar nomination for Barbie instead of Margot Robbie even if they are in different categories. Margot Robbie is much more deserving of an Oscar nomination than Ferrera imo. If the Academy would like to nominate an actress from a Best Picture nominee, they should have nominated Sandra Huller from The Zone of Interest instead. It would be cool if she gotten a double nomination this year like at the BAFTAs.
I love surprise nominees with few precursors awards, but this one is not it. She’s just there, delivering monologue and then back in the background again… lmao

I'm not angry America got in; I'm angry Julianne Moore didn't
She's a great actress, I would love to see her wining sometime in future years
We were all surprised she got the nomination but so happy she did!!! When I heard her name I almost shouted out loud. She was wonderful in "real women have curves". Oscar are sometimes about career recognition and in this case it was about time.
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
Yeah no big surprises but a few happy hopefullys got in!! Me too I was particularly happy Annette got in, especially after I heard people say she was an outside chance because her character, Diana Nyad , was not "likeable"!!! 🙄
Love Cody’s take. Thank you both
Personally I think she was nominated more for delivering an extremely well-written monologue rather than for her actual performance.
But last year there wasn’t a clear front runner. This year it is so glaringly obvious Da’vine has been sweeping
Highly unlikely. There has been a clear winner for best supporting in Devine Joy, unlike last year.
😬

How do you know this lol 😭✋
@@amourex5053I’m just guessing
I’ve always loved America Ferrera as a latina myself! Idk she’d be so prevalent in Barbie and I loved the positive representation ❤good for her
I still can’t believe she got nominated instead of Rosamund Pile for Saltburn. Like, WTF 💀🤦♂️
🤭
I would NEVER nominate her for this role. This is beyond ridiculous. This could be played by anyone else...but Julianne Moore was incredible in May December
Absolutely agree.
@@samuelbarber6177 Julianne Moore, Rachel McAdams, Penelope Cruz, Rosamund Pike, Claire Foy, Sandra Huller…
Like you said the race for lead actress was so stacked this year and all the women nominated totally deserved it
Most people had Margot getting in for Best Actress so I would consider her not getting in as a surprise.
All mothrrs aren't appreciated when kids are teens, that's nothing new.
I love watching gays stanning a queen
Please do a video of Brenda Frickers surprise Oscar win in 1990
I would like that
I was all here for her nomination. I’ve loved her since the Dcom Gotta kick it up. And here in Barbie she really represents the every woman in such a simple and organic way!
She doesn't represent ME!!
Although Robbie had memorable scenes, they don’t feel as iconic and her acting probably hasn’t had that ‘wow’ moment that stuck to voters minds as ferrera’s did
I hear Sandra Hüller say in an interview that she’s not a SAG member, so does that mean she couldn’t have been up for a SAG nom anyway ??
Existing Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike and Sandra Huller, there's absolutely no reason for America Ferrera to be nominated this year.
I love Ferrera, she's such an underrated actress. But her role in Barbue wasn't Oscar worthy, that's for sure.
It's redic she never got an emmy nod for superstore.
great analysis
She also played a beautiful mom character
The enitre performance was great start to finish.
It felt very authentic and real.
Not really couldn't care less about her and her daughter.
I’ll be honest:
I think a big part of the reason is because of politics (feminist agenda)not to mention Margot Robbie couldn’t make it cuz there was too much competition so they had to fit a female actress nom from Barbie
I think Robbie missed just due to her campaigning more as a producer than an actress, and genre bias. It seems that the academy is incapable of nominating more than one largely comedic performance in the Lead Category.
@@poett8875 nah I’ll be honest again
She doesn’t make the cut for me the competition is far too high this yr for leading actress
Apart from being the pretty girl who plays Barbie
Her performance wasn’t
special at all imo
Greta Lee did a far better performance than her and missed out which says a lot about the competition
@@poett8875 you don’t get my point fully so let me explain
A lot of Margot Robbie fans need to understand that she wasn’t nominated because if we’re being honest her performance wasn’t good enough for an Oscar compared to the Nominees,
Her Character was too one-dimensional ,a lot of the comedic jokes did not land well and the character wasn’t inspiring or interesting at all for a lot of ppl like me,there’s really nothing special about her performance she’s just the stereotypical pretty girl who played Barbie and this is not just my opinion.
And no Greta Lee didn’t make it probably because she’s an actress with low status, popularity and fame in the industry(both Lily Gladstone and Sandra Huller’s performances were quiet and subtle this yr)
Think about this Scenario:If u swapped the roles between Robbie and Lee I think everyone would be screaming for Robbie to win the whole thing
Even you would agree don’t you?
I have loved her since Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants! So happy for her and this moment!!! 🩷👏🏽
All this because of one single monologue. Regarding Annette Bening + Jodie Foster, they got the nods because of their status as Hollywood veteran and former Oscar winners. AMPAS always rate legacy picks higher. 😂🤣
She to me is at my top 3 of the category, only behind Da'Vine and Danielle
While to many she has one scene, i do believe she has more to do with more suttle acting being the human conection of the film and that one scene she has to me is better than other nominees, like Emily Blunt who also has pretty much one scene is fine, but America kills it
In the hands of a lesser actress that monologue takes out the audience for being to "woke"... But she gives it feeling, humanity and strugle
I'm glad she got in
I really love America Ferrera. But…my hopeless self still roots for the underdog, Danielle Brooks.
She totally deserves the recognition, finally she's getting more noticed after Barbie. She also played my favourite character in How To Train Your Dragon!
Nope, was really hoping for a Rachel McAdams nom (Margaret)
She deserved it! she was nominated except it!
I did Barbienheimer.
Honestly she’s been so lovely all awards season ❤❤❤
Well, they all get picked by that lady who holds a big party for contenders, right? I heard if she likes you, you’re in, if she doesn’t, you’re out.
Maybe the directors nominated were better?
I mean did you see all the movies? I would agree with you for the actress race but I am not impressed with all of the directors.
@@jennywhite5531 Yes I did.
Subjective. I would’ve swapped out Scorcese for Gerwig. Killers is the same type of movie he always directs.
I haven’t seen anything else besides Oppenheimer, but damn, I don’t really think that this movie and the performance are very deserving of the praise.
How could you think that, though, if you haven’t actually seen the other films that feature Oscar nominees?!
@@rainbowsandlove oh, I am sorry, maybe I didn’t phrased it well. I haven’t seen anything else besides Barbie and Oppenheimer.
WatchMojo did their take on why Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were "snubbed".
"Why Greta Gerwig SHOULDN'T Have Been Nominated for Barbie": th-cam.com/video/8Ow4y4NPgRo/w-d-xo.html
I’m probably alone with my opinion: I thought Robbie was great in Babylon
It was a surprise nomination, unexpected, but well deserved, she grounds the movie, a highlight, apart from the movie, seems like a nice person 👏👏👏
She should have been nominated in the leading role
I just think that Barbie doesn't deserve that amount of noms. It is a good movie, but that's it.
Production design is a standout, though. Let it win song who cares.
I love surprise nominees with few precursors awards, but this one is not it. She’s just there, delivering monologue and then back in the background again… lmao
AMERICA DESERVED IT, PERIOD
Annette Bening didn't take Margot R. spot. Sorry for the correction but I had too.
🤔
I agree annette bening better
I swear, I left the theater saying "America deserves an Oscar for that monologue!" and I'm so happy she got it! She is an extraordinary actress and I am very happy that she is being recognized 🩵
I can't wait to see her in countless projects
There's a special place in Hell for Andrea Riseborough... Am glad there is an episode about America and her nomination... that racist at BeKindRewind obviously isn't going to do one.
She didn't do anything, that monologue did all the heavy work. I guess she did perform the monologue, but any actresses worth their salt could have done the same thing.
Because she name is America 55
I like America Ferrera, but sorry...her nomination is BS.
Come on, she has no business being in that line-up. This was a mediocre performance at best. Pike, Hueller and Moore were snubbed. Her nomination really doesn't make sense to me at all.
That monologue is single most cringy piece of garbage I ever witness at the movie theatre !!!
You don’t need cody
😯
I loved this one, thank you so much for your work 👏👏👏
Barbie is empty shell of a movie!👎
Undeserved nomination.
It's giving Jamie Lee Curtis
I'm scared she may even win best supporting actress come oscar night just like Jamie Lee Curtis.
Davine needs to start campaigning HARD. We all saw what happened to Angela Bassett last year. Front runner and then poof, lost the oscar last minute
nooooooo please😂
I dont want that happend
For her thin voice in monolouge
If surprise i hope danieal brocks win
Academy regret they dont give angella basset the oscar last year so give her honrary oscar this seasion
A political nomination. I am still happy for her, though. She has done some lovely work over the years and there have been wins even less deserving than this nomination i.e Sandra Bullock.
That monologue was so contrived.
This commenter is absolutely a man.
🥸
@@jennywhite5531 I'm a woman, and I agree with the commentator.

How she got the nom about monolouge when the monolouge the worst in film and in her performance.

If they was in category will be biger and better in cermony.

Bad film...and film for children
And all nom and win in seasion for audiance..not becase cast if film.
