I couldn't agree more that X and Pearl were heavily slept on at the academy. It would've been nice to see Pearl get a nomination for Cinematography and Best Actress where X gets a nomination for best sound and best makeup.

I disagree so much about the Everything Everywhere All At Once’s costume design. Jobu/Joy’s outfits were A+ and iconic. Even Evelyn’s PUNK! sweater is easily identifiable. I think the Everything Everywhere song was a little lackluster though and would’ve preferred Ciao Papa instead.

I strongly agree with Pearl and X. In my opinion, Mia Goth should’ve been nominated for Pearl instead of Ana De Armes for Blonde in the best actress category. Her 8 minute monologue is PHENOMENAL!

Agree heartily about The Northman. Robert Eggers has done a lot to revive the historical drama, always one of my favorite genres. It's a shocking, gritty, but ultimately beautiful film, sadly underrated. To see it shut out of nominations was a shame.
Ana de Armas will win a Best Actress Oscar one day, for a movie that's actually GOOD. And I want Michelle Williams to win her Best Actress Oscar for a movie in which she plays the protagonist.

That Best Actress category needed an overhaul in general. Love Michelle & Cate's performances so much, but the other 3 definitely shouldn't have been there over Danielle Deadwyler, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, or even Emma Thompson in Good Luck To You, Leo Grande. As good as Ana is in Blonde, that entire movie is so hideous that I hate that it'll always be known as an Oscar nominated film because of Ana's performance. The Diane Warren nomination doesn't bother me as much because she's very much deserved a competitive Oscar for several years now. Thanks for another great video, Brian. 😊

I have to agree with the Best Original Song nomination. They should have gave it to Ciao Papa.
I also felt that Judd Hirsch didn’t deserve the nomination as well, although it’s not the worst nomination. He’s good, but it was more like a cameo. Paul Dano should had got that nomination.

The Riseborough nom gives me so many mixed feelings. The “back door” argument feels hollow because it means only people who have corporations spending millions on their campaign are allowed in but also the way people used their connections for her in a way that performers of color have never seen is very telling. It’s also weird to put all the hate for the lack of black performers on her when Michelle Williams is in here for a weaker performance. Yes, Deadwyler should be here but Riseborough is far from the first I’d kick out.

  • @laurajones1773

I like Michelle Williams too. The Fablemans isn’t one of her best performances. She is worthy of nominations for My Week with Marilyn and Manchester by the Sea, but not Fablemans. I thought The Fablemans was okay. It’s not one of Spielberg’s best works. I prefer Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and Jaws than The Fablemans. Those are much better films from him. Heck, I like Lincoln more too.

I feel like Diane Warren is the anti-Taylor Swift.
Taylor writes songs with such specific details and singular insights that they end up being universal. No, I don't have an ex-boyfriend who still has my scarf - I can't even remember owning a scarf after I was ten or eleven - but I know the feeling behind it. I immediately feel the emotion of the singer, but I also feel the melancholy sadness of the ex, holding on to a memory that ended far too soon.
On the other hand, you've got Diane, who writes songs so ridiculously generic they can apply to anyone and any situation and end up feeling hollow and meaningless. I don't think she's a bad songwriter by any means, but her songs are pop lightweights without any depth or insight that I've ever noticed. The fact that she's been nominated for an Academy Award more than once or twice blows my mind.
Pop music can be amazing. Listen to George Michael's songs, for example. "Careless Whisper", "Freedom '90", and so many more are perfect works of pop that also have so many layers and so much meaning. Diane rarely comes even close to anything like that, although I do love "Just Like Jesse James" and "If You Asked Me To" among others. Again, she's not a bad songwriter. But she's such an odd choice to be such an Oscar perennial.

I found TO LESLIE a terrible film with Andrea Riseborough's performance completely overwrought. I thought Marc Maron gave the best performance of the film, but that's not saying much. The costumes in EEAAO deserved the nomination. Even while watching it, I was thinking about how brilliant the costume choices were. There are so many of them and each one has to stand in for a particular moment. Ana De Armas got a nomination just for making it through the film.

So the film doesn't deserve a costume nomination if it's not a period or a pure fantasy film? Costume design nomination for EEAAO is one of the most inspiring of the recent years. Ofc it got in cause of the lazy voting but it's inspired nonetheless. If anything Mrs Harris goes to Paris is an okay nom, nothing groundbreaking but just cause you see more dresses doesn't mean it's one of the most deserving of the category. If anything the lighting of the movie even made them look a bit cheap. It's about the design not the biggest dress. A research on what each category means in the filmmaking would be nice.

You're basically saying that if a movie is bad, a performer should not be nominated for an Oscar, ergo you think that other actresses that weren't nominated but were in films that you feel were better than Blonde should have been nominated instead of Ana. Let me remind you, an Oscar for best performance is simply that, for best performance. The fact that even most people who hated Blonde could agree that Ana's performance was not simply good, but great, speaks volumes.
Let me add at this moment, you did not mention that the costume design in Blonde was Oscar worthy. Ana was made to look just like Marilyn in scene after scene. You really hate the movie to not even mention that Blonde [however bad it was] deserved an Oscar nod for costume design.

Spoiler alerts: I know I am going to be attacked by the Cult of Tom Cruise for making any critiques whatsoever of Cruise or his films, but Top Gun Maverick's story was too similar to Star Wars. In Star Wars, the rebels had to fly through a channel in the Death Star to get to its vulnerability where Luke could fire on it and destroy it. In Top Gun Maverick, the Navy pilots had to fly through mountain canyons to where Maverick could fire on a protected uranium enrichment facility. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Top Gun Maverick. But when I saw that scene, it took me back to Star Wars. Rehash. Let the trolling begin.

No Offense to Her, but Diane Warren being a favoritism nomination from the Branch, and the fact that we don’t have a lot of On-Screen Performances or Musical Numbers, and just get generic credit songs, it shows us why the Academy Needs to get rid of the Best Original Song Category, it’s more of ABC wants Ratings to get Big Music Artists instead of nominating UpBeat Songs, this is why the win for the song Nattu Nattu from RRR shows is why we need more Songs like that to Get Nominated instead of Diane Warren every year

but are the nominations for costumes about being wowed always? The criticism of EEAAO's (a film I don't even particularly like)' costuming being nominated, I do think the costumes for that were a big part of the success of the film and I'd say moreso in the character's mundane looks, like Jamie Lee Curtis's character, Michelle Yeoh's mumsy thing, the daughter's girlfiend's hip shirt. The editing and the final product annoyed me, but the costuming was great for what it was supposed to do I thought

  • @GartYukiteru
    @GartYukiteru 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

In animated featured, if they really wanted an "kid goes to an adventure at the sea with a magical creature" type of movie, My Father's Dragon was right there.
In costumes, I completely disagree. Yes, The Woman King was amazing costumes, and I do think they are better than EEAAO. But if you have to take someone out, for me, Babylon's costume are just so bad, and bland; like, the worst aspect of the movie. Elvis are really just recreations, and no specially good ones, and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is just the typical european period piece that we get every year. I much prefer more EEAAO-type of nomination in this category. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was the correct winner.
In makeup. i agree with Pearl needed a nomination, but I don't agree with the rest. I don't really care about All Quiet, but technically is a very well made movie, and I don't think any of their nominations there are bad. I feel Elvis has the worst makeup ever, so plastic, and somehow, for me, Butler looks more like Elvis before they put the makeup on him, so bad job all around.
In production design, I mean... Is DESIGN, not construction. The fact the scenery was CGI, doesn't mean there wasn't someone designing everything, and making it be absolutely perfect for the movie. A totally deserved nomination, in my opinion. The one I would say was the weaker in the category is The Fabelmans, but even then it has a really good production design.
In Score, I completely agree. The Fabelmans is a very weak score, but even weaker was the winner, so...
In Actress, just all around a shit show. Like, Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett are AMAZING, but yes, all the other ones are like really weak. Ana de Armas is an amazing actress, but I feel she is barely creating a character in Blonde; she is just a empty vessel for a ridiculous amount of paint to be inflicted.
In Editing... Mmmm... I don't like Elvis, it a very subpart movie. But I feel is the fault of a very superficial screenplay, and the editing, even if not specially good, is doing everything it can to hide that they have nothing to say in the movie. The weakest of the nominated in this category. But Babylon, I feel, has the same problem, an empty screenplay with nothing new to say, that the editing is trying so hard to hide. Like, great cast, but very weak overall.
In Best Original Song, of course is a incredibly weak song. But like, the category itself is filler, so is fine.

I completely disagree with your argument about Ana de Armas. It is entirely possible to give a great performance in a bad film, and the quality of her work should stand alone. I often see films that I don't connect with which have great performances or outstanding technical elements (like the cinematography or the score), and the efforts of those individual artists should not be ignored. Bardo was one of my least favorite films of last year, and I was still rooting for Darius Khondji to get the Oscar. That movie was pretentious and self-indulgent as hell, but that didn't stop the cinematography from being gorgeous. And Blonde being a very ill-advised, even morally questionable, movie has no bearing on the skill and level of commitment that Ana de Armas showed in that part. I have seen movies where the filmmaking is so sloppy that it gets in the way of the performances, but I don't think that applies here. She was unmistakably great in that role.

Ana de Armas' performance is too one-dimensional, she cries or suffers and offers very little variety in her performance, she tries hard but was not but nominated for an Oscar; Watch Michelle Williams' performance as Marilyn is much better

Wait, you say that Avatar didn't deserve best production design because it's hard to tell "when CGI begins and real life ends". Well that is exactly the same reason then for "maverick" missing out over more "realistic" shots of Cinematography. I think that Empire of Light is exactly the perfect example of why (no matter the film) we include an outstanding work. And Empire was one just film. I fully agree that Ana de Armas did NOT deserve the nomination and idc what any of these Blonde apologists in the comments have to say…. Yes, she was fully committed to a role that didn’t let her do anything besides cry and be topless…. Yes, her performance was instrumental in this movie’s overall desecration of Marilyn’s legacy… but neither of those things mean she gave a great performance; she just successfully gave us nothing.

Ana de Armas is incredible in this film, depending on the director's vision, but you put her in the worst nominations but then you praise and say positive things about her characterization, then she should not be in this video and if sometimes she gets lost in the narrative of the film, which is not very good, but what is not good in narrative Ana de Armas helps and overshadows that plot with her performance so she deserves her nomination, apart from that she is the first Cuban nominated in the 95 years of the Oscar, it is somewhat embarrassing but She is the first, I think I would remove her from this video if you are also criticizing the movie but here it is just acting and she deserves it.

As a non-native English speaker who started learning English in 2014 who sometimes still has a hard time getting her point across in English, she managed to do justice to this Hollywood and pop culture icon, from the nuances of her emotional layers to her physique and accent. I think her performance is better than Michelle Yeoh in EEAAO, seriously.

If there was gonna be a best actress surprise I think there were better options more notably mia goth in pearl, taki wang in decision to leave, Rooney Mara in women talking, Regina hall in honk for Jesus, Taylor russell in bones and all and Aubrey plaza in Emily the criminal, just personally speaking all of those aforementioned performances were much better than Andrea riseborough in to Lelise doe Andrea does a great job. As for Ana de Armas she’s more complicated bc she’s a prime example of giving a bravura performance where it’s Ana’s amazing talent, skills, dedication and ambition as a actress that outweighs a outright horrible movie I truly believe if Ana was the executive producer of the film she would’ve made blonde be a better film and had her performance more appreciated.
I disagree on the EEAO costume design mention that was one of the top 2 best in the nomination along with the black panther Wakanda forever I recommend watching Mina Lee ranking/analysis video on the 2023 best costume design Oscar nominees she goes into great detail on brilliant on the costume design is from the ordinary costumes in the real world to the different alternative universes costumes being symbolic of the unique different identities of the main 3 characters as Asian Americans, I personally think Babylon was the least best in the costume design category and I would’ve taken that out for the women king, if not women king I would’ve picked women talking, pearl or x

    ABSOLUTELY NOT
Brian, usually you make good points, but this is not one of them.
Top Gun Maverick was a WGA, Satellite, USC Scripter nominee. The dialogue is rich it balances homage of the original while allowing people who never saw the original. It introduces to new cadets and you are invested in their success. The script is also very tight and efficient in the sense that by the 3rd act the audience can turn off their brain because we u derstand the stakes and the mission and allows us to appreciate the action scenes of the film. Also the Val Kilmer/ Tom Cruise scene is literally wonderful and a pure flex of how smart the script is. So no. Top Gun Maverick deservedly earned its nomination and quite frankly could be argued to be one of the best adapted screenplays of all of 2022 for solid reasons.

The whole thing is just ridiculous & I was bored as hell the whole time watching it. The Tom & Val scene felt silly to me. Any film that has me "turning off my brain" can't be decrscribed as any higher than average at best. Even the parts I know are real felt fake. Just another cheesy action movie imo.

The costume design of EEAAO was actually a very tedious undertaking of a task and difficult to do well bevause it was talking about mutlti,-verse.
But for anyone doing it , it was great fun because it would stretch your creative skills to the imit. I think the designer for example could havea added some distinguishing feature of the costumes for those scenes of the multi+verses Ike curly seams to denote the miky way or curly tattoos on the arms, or a band of white powder across the forehead to denote the same thing Costumes and make-up could have been more cosely inyrrtwined.14:47

You lost me right at the beginning. Top Gun Maverick ABSOLUTELY DESERVED its Adapted Screenplay nomination. I was the only one saying all year how it belonged in that category because it was one of the best films of the year, not for its acting, not for its action, but because of its Screenplay. It was so much better than the original, and that year, there were few films you could put above it. And even then, they weren't that much better. So no, Top Gun Maverick's Screenplay was a deserved nomination and honestly, should've gotten the win. Yes, over Women Talking.

Now i'm not gonna defend Andrew Dominik for his Blonde film because it was indeed a huge misfire on his part. But I do think he's still capable of being a great filmmaker, like this is the same guy who made The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, one of the best modern westerns, but he screwed it up with his recent film.
