  • Free Football Drill: Attacking Patterns In a 4-3-3 - George Mackie - UEFA A Licensed Coach
40 yards x 50 yards area divided into 4 vertical and horizontal channels. Players set up in a 1-4-1-4-1 formation. Playing the ball from the back and trying to build up the play is always a tricky one, in this drill you can find how important it is to receive the ball with the right angles and always have awareness of where and when you can break into the next line.
    Coaching Points:
Creating Angles: Good angles are needed by all players in this exercise. Players need to consider their body shape to receive the ball allowing them to play a forward pass quickly within 2 touches. To produce these angles, players must have awareness to identify the space and where the next pass will be played.
Weight & Quality of Pass: The weight and speed in which the ball is passed are equally important to the quality. We are looking to gain an advantage in a match over the opponents so the passes need to be at the right pace and into the right place. Passing the ball into the player’s safe side, away from the opponent and thinking about the next pass are key points in build up play.
Movement: There is never a time to stop moving in football as we will always react to something quicker in movement than by standing still. While the ball is moving it’s important that the players are also on the move to keep confusing their markers and accelerate when the time is right to receive the ball or create space for a teammate.
Communication: While the moves are being executed you can hear the players communicate between each other to ensure the player who has the ball knows where to pass the next ball and have awareness of where the opponent might be. Communication is key when passing the ball as you can help your teammates make better decisions. Every time an attacker passes the ball they must try giving information that helps the player receiving the ball; (Man on, turn, time, left, right…) are common clear shouts used at the highest level.
     Progressions:
    Add in passive opposition.
Add in a number of defenders.

a lot of teams dont have the luxury of having half a pitch to train on, usually its a 3rd or a 7s park. any tips or trick on how to get the same results (more or less) on a pitch that is 3rd the size to then taking it into a full pitch?

learn the attacking and defensive style of play and work out how the structure of your team you want, as there are many different 433 styles

This formation is the one that Kickers Green U13 is using for 2021-22.

Personally don't see the value in these unopposed drills. Half the players here are not involved and simply spectating. There is no intensity or realism etc.
