  • The Canadair Regional Jet family of aircraft is another one of Bombardier's commercial aircraft programs that was sold off as part of their exiting the commercial aircraft market.
The CRJ program was bought by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, with the deal closing in June of 2020. Let's see what it's like flying on Air Canada Express' Mitsubishi/Bombardier CRJ-900!

During Bombarider's first brush with Bankruptcy after 9-11, it was bailed out by the Beaudoin family (descendants of Armand Bombardier) who bought the recreational prducts division (the original Bombardier) from Bombardier Inc. The family that created the company were not allowed to use the "Bombardier" branding, so what used to be Bombardier is now BRP.
When Longview/Viking Air bought (progressively) all the ex deHavilland products from Bombardier, there was no branding problem because Bombardeir had bad reputation of abandonning these products (sucy as Twin Otter which Viking restarted), and the Dash-8 which Bombardier saw no future anymore since it was so focus on C-Series only. The water bombers had remained well known aroudn the wrld as "Canadairs" (like Q-Tips).
so when Viking got them, there was no need to use "Bombardier".
I have to assume that the name change for the CRJs is also due to legal requirement to stop using the Bombardier brand. Also, MHI wants to establish its name in the industry (which is why it bought the CRJ to get contacts within aviation industry) so would explain push to get airlines to use the Mitsubishi brand for CRJs.
Nitpick: MHI did get "sales" but that refers mostly to parts and used/leased aircraft. They did not get anyt production capacity. Prior to transaction closing Bombardier delivered the last new CRJ and closed production line. The hangars at Mirabel were set to be sold to IArbus so it could increase C-Series production. Not sure if this happened. But MHI did not buy any capacity to build new ones.
The one remaining question is what happens to the "Bombardier" name when what is left of Bombardier sells its remaining 2 private jets (Challenger and Global 7500) to anothetr company and folds. Will the name go back to the Beaudoin family and they can rename BRP back to Bombardier focused only on recrational products?

Sorry I still stand by that it should still be referred to as a Bombardier CRJ since it was built under Bombardier and not Mitsubishi the same way you would not call a DC-10, MD-11, MD-88 (ok all mostly retired but you can get the point) a Boeing ____ . Last Christmas we ended up flying 4 hours on a American Airlines CRJ700 operated by Skywest which was originally supposed to be a A319. Even in first class 4 hours is too long in a CRJ especially with not IFE and no working wi-fi.

McDonel Douglass was purchsed by Boeing, Boeing owns the "McD" trademark so you could theoretically still call its McD DC-10.
Mitsubishi only bought the rights to the CRJ product line, a dead/retired product, it did not buy the rights to use "Bombardier" name.
Bombardier had stopped new sales of CRJs (since it was focusing on C-Series) and ceased production of the last orders before transaction to Mitsibishi.

Great video! I wonder if AC plans to phase out the PTV's on their CRJ's.. Your aircraft was one of the earlier examples Jazz received in the mid-2000's... back then they were known as CRJ-705's and flew fairly long distance flights like KIAH-CYYZ and KORD-CYVR... recently though, all the older models have been re-identified as CRJ-900's. Through Jazz Aviation has since been taking deliveries of new examples of the -900 since about 2016, only a handful of their "NextGen" models have the IFE system... all of the ones delivered in the last couple of years have the same seats and layout, but lack the IFE.. I'm hoping they either install IFE on the newest models they have or try and assign the shorter flights to those jets. for right now it really is inconsistent and it seems like you lucked out my friend! Cheers!

The 900's taken from Skywest had no IFE and I don't think they plan to install new ones. Not sure about the next gen series. Westjet's 737 max's don't have IFE while AC does so I thought AC would want all their aircraft to have that perk. I guess not.

I’ve never seen someone make a video flying out of YQR Regina airport and to watch this really excited me and I acctualy 1 month ago went on this flight and it was awsome it was my first time flying aswell I was in row 26B and it didn’t have a lot of leg room but it did work. Thank you for reviewing it you earned a Subscriber!

Comical to refer to the CRJ as a Mitsubishi lol. Mitsubishi has not produced a commercial aircraft in decades (the MRJ project is delayed indefinitely)- they have about as much claim to the CRJ as Boeing does to the classic DH8 (Boeing actually owned the DH8 program in the early 1990's between the Dehavilland and Bombardier ownership)

I always wondered why you called them Mitsubishi CRJ900's in the spotting videos because I always knew they were from Bombardier, well now I know why, thanks for explaining

Yea, but that's wrong. Mitsubushi hasn't built any. So they're still Bombardier.

I flew an Air Canada CRJ200 between Regina and Vancouver once. While the legroom was fine, I found the abreast room to be extremely tight. (FWIW, not sure why, but I also find Westjet's 737 configuration tightly awkward)
Since then I've avoided any itinerary with a CRJ - I'll take a a Dash 8-300 (or guess now Q400) if need to be.

Ah, Regina. The Canadian city that gave its name to a Swedish electric train, despite Regina itself not having electrified rail. Bombardier built six sligthly different variants for Swedish regional transit agencies and trans-regional train partnerships.
I think the CRJ was going to be rebranded as SpaceJet, but it didn't quite sell under Mitsubishi ownership, only exasterbated by the pandemic. So MHI quietly discontinued the program during or after the pandemic.

Most two-class regional jets (at least here in the states) have wireless entertainment, but seatback screens are really something.

In economy 2 3 to configuration
On air Canada rouges it was a 3 3 3 configuration with the same as the extra legroom seat for both ways going from Toronto to mia and from mia to Toronto

It's not a Mitubishi. Production had stopped by the time they purchased the CRJ line. And there was no official name change. Just check the ICAO type code website and no mention of Mitsubishi. As for airlines calling it mitsubishi...which airlines...only people i know you call it mitsubishi are avgeeks. Aviation enthusiasts call it what it is bombardier, as does the aviation industry. This is yet more mis-information by people that do not know how to check the facts.

This aircraft is insufficient for flights to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. With a headwind, it can not carry a full itinerary with luggage and enough fuel. Most of the luggage was left behind on my flight in order to carry fuel for headwind and alternate airport.

Mistsibishi hardly did anything to the CRJ, therefore it should remain the "Bombardier CRJ." Sucks that other aircraft companies are now claiming Canadian aircraft after buying them from Bombardier.
