I Flew on Porter's Embraer E2... from Western Canada!

  • Porter has made quite a name for themselves since launching in 2006, with their unique Dash 8 operation from Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport, and their elevated level of onboard service.
    Up until a few months ago though, they’d been exclusively an Eastern Canadian sight. With their new Embraer E2s though, they've finally expanded to Western Canada, and I gave them a try on a longer itinerary from Calgary to Toronto to Halifax!

      Agreed, took my first Porter flights a few weeks ago and they far surpass Air Canada and Westjet and any of the budget airlines in terms of service, flight prices and their cabins are very clean, both on the Q400 and E2. They had to cancel a flight because of an electrical problem, but they rebooked us easily, and when my bag was stranded behind by the baggage crew accidently, they did everything to get it to me and delivered quickly.

    I flew Porter for the first time recently from Vancouver to Toronto (return). Thumbs up. I love the 2x2 seating format. The E195E2 has a very modern and comfortable cabin and is very quiet. Furthermore, who could complain about the free WI-FI! Wish them success, I think they got a winning product. I had an opportunity and was looking forward to the experience of flying on an Air Canada A220 a few months ago, but about a month or so before the flight, they switched my flight to a 737-Max8; otherwise I would have been able to compare these two jets that are competing in a similar niche.

    Porter is such an under-rated airline. Ultimately I think this venture into Pearson as a new hub is going to be a bit of a fail. I flew Toronto to Ottawa on the E2 and only 11 seats were filled, it felt like a private plane especially with Porter’s fantastic complimentary selection and in flight wifi. No idea why a q400 wasn’t used but was much appreciated regardless

    • @thecaynuck
      @thecaynuck 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They use a lot less Q400's for Pearson flights and prioritize them more for the YTZ flights. As for the less passengers on the E2, make sure you're signed up for Porter's loyalty program because on flights like that it can bump you up to a PorterReserve seat for no additional cost! I was randomly bumped to the first row because of that on a Toronto-Halifax flight.

    • @jfmezei

      This was Porter's original plan to extend the Toronto Island airport runway. It was rejected by the federal transport minister. So not going to happen. Porter has firmly decided to move to unreliable Pearson with delays etc and loses an advantage they had by being at the small airport with small planes. I know they pretend they will keep a presence there, but they will need to feed their lonhg hauls from Pearson so all cities will start to see flights to Pearson instead of Toronto Island. The writing is on the wall.
      As happened with City Express, as soon as Porter leaves Toronto Island, so will Air Canada. Except this time, they will leave behind a rather expensive piece of infrastructure compared to the original terminal that was as big as a suburban home 🙂

      I think the problem is not only for international, but domestic as well is how centralized most of your population is. Compared to your Southern neighbors, hi from the states, most Canadians live in a few cities and only several of those have enough demand to support daily international flights, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. All those cities combined fit into the NYC or LA metro areas, not even mentioning other major hubs like Miami, Boston, Detroit, Denver, Seattle, Dallas, Honolulu, etc.... There just simply isn't the traffic to sustain two long haul airlines in Canada, especially when here in the States we only have 3. Not to mention the average Canadian is also "less wealthy" than the average American.

    Glad you enjoyed it! The flight loads have definitely been a bit topsy turvy, but there has been steady improvement this spring/summer. The loads between YYZ and YUL/YOW are generally pretty light as far as I can tell. I thought it was because we were kind of cannibalizing our own flights (already have fairly high frequency to both airports from YTZ) but apparently they are serving a purpose, the shorter turns get line indoc sectors done quicker for new pilots (I remember Air Canada initially deploying their first few 787s on Ottawa/Montreal/Halifax turns out of Pearson in 2014 for this purpose), plus we are picking up Transat interline passengers and a few others things. Apparently we picked up a number of YYZ slots that WestJet recently vacated, which had significantly better arrival/departure times compared to the original slots- so that, along with the busy summer travel season, has helped fill up the western flights a decent amount. I've jumpseated on the E2 several times, and the last 2 or 3 times I had to take the redeye flight coming back from YVR since the other flights were all full. I agree there should definitely be more emphasis on advertising/awareness out west since Porter is still building a presence in Western Canada.
    My head is still stuck to the ceiling in the E2 washrooms as well, but I'll take the touchless flush, soap and hot water any day over the "outhouse" I'm accustomed to using on the Q! 😁

    I think Porter should've bucked the prototype, low cost, and industry trend and offered 34" of seat pitch for "Poter Classic" and installed 8 to 12 of Embraer's staggered First class seats with 38" of the pitch for "Porter Reserve." Also, providing "Porter Reserve" customers with enhanced dining options and portions served on china dinnerware, retaining the current dining options with the innovative box ware for "Classic" patrons. That would have knocked it out of the park. Currently, Porter is good but could be more remarkable. I felt Porter was more innovative Pre-COVID.

    Alex hi from YYC. Thanks for the closer look at Porter. I certainly have know doubt they will make a go of it in the western market. I suspect in the long run they will position themselves in nicely beside Westjet. It will just take some time and marketing as this is a Westjet city for obvious reasons. The new Embraer's look fantastic inside and out. Thanks see you next time.

    You do good work Alex. Thank you. It frustrates me no end to be an old boy that likes to travel and lives in London Ontario. I get to watch you on pampered service on direct routes from Calgary to wherever you want to go. That is not how most of Canada works. A city of a half-million people can't get anyone to fly from here to the east coast. (Direct) Hamilton can, Edmonton can, Kitchener can. Sure, we can go Westjet to Edmonton. Who cares? If it isn't Calgary, Abbotsford, Edmonton, Toronto or "Majors", the rest of us are screwed. Good for you based out of Calgary that gets every flight available. Ayup. I am pissed. To go anywhere useful from our large City I have to go to either Toronto, Kitchener, Hamilton, or Detroit first. It has been like this my whole life. Once upon a time London had every major and minor airline going. Now...NOT. Pardon my vent. You'd think a City of 1/2 million would have a decent plane service. NOPE. We are served mostly by those old DASH 300's that ferry us to Toronto for'REAL' flights. UGH. (OLD. They shoud be retired ASAP. Dirty, tiny, tight and they suck.) Thanks AirCan 'Jazz'.

      Canada needs to invest more in it's rail infrastructure. In Europe and Asia, people who live outside the "major" cities can simply jump on a train that takes them directly to the airport. The state of VIA rail is a joke.

    Just flew AC to florida from Toronto, I received a good fare for business class. Our flights were operated by Air Canada Rouge it was a terrible experience our flight outbound was to depart at 4:25 pm delayed due to maintenance change of aircraft until 6:10 pm. Replacement aircraft came in late and also had maintenance issue. Final departure 7:30pm. Service aboard was minimal they had a catering issue business class had not enough food! I am soooo glad there is another Airline choice now offering better service new aircraft thank you Porter I can not wait to fly with you!😊

    It's true, Porter needs more brand recognition but when they do get more planes hope they start more flights outside the country, we need more options to the US/Caribbean from a Canadian airline (direct flights)

    I plane spotted the similar Vancouver to Toronto flight a few days ago and I was excited when I saw it since it’s Porter’s first time in western Canada. The embraer caught me off guard… since I thought they figured out a way to use a Dash-8 to get to Toronto haha. I didn’t know they expanded to Calgary as well

      @@williamharris8367 omg right? I'd absolutely love it if Porter replaced or added to their YQM-YTZ route with an E2 direct YQM to YYZ. With WestJet no longer flying that route and Swoop's soon to be demise, and the cancellation of the Air Canada A220 service there, Porter could definitely steal some customers from Rouge!

    • @AlexPraglowskiAviation
      @AlexPraglowskiAviation  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They don't offer it at all, you can't book anything from YEG/YVR/YYC to the likes of YTS/YAM/YSB etc. Could do it on two tickets with enough time in between though

    • @patrickferguson7591
      @patrickferguson7591 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexPraglowskiAviation ah I see. Just tried in the website. Seems so weird to have a network but have a great schism across it. Someone looking at the destination map won’t understand why they can’t select YFC-YYC when they try to book it.
      Many US airlines will let you book itineraries with airport switches like EWR-JFK which are way more painful than YTZ-YYZ.

    The issue with Porter I have encountered is their tickets are always 2 to 5 times the other airlines and since I always see them at gates at airports, their flights never seem full or at over 85% capacity. Wanting to fly them, but with a student budget, I can only spend a little extra.

    Since I am not a TH-camr, I fly coach. So the 30" seat pitch does not diffentiate Porter friom the 2 big guys. SeatGuru does not (yet) have data on The Porter E192 aircraft. In the end, with an undifferentiated product, porter will simply compete based on yield management games to get listed first on flight listings and that is a game which Air Canada has consistently won, killing Canadian Airlines for instance.
    I am curious if the P%W engines were "transfered" over from Porter's original order for the C-Series. (aka: Porter cancelled the C-Series aircrafy but kept engine order and converted it to the model for the E192.
    I flew Porter in its early days and they were amazing. After they sold the Toronto terminal, started to charge for luggage etc, ithey lost their actual edge and running on reputation. But out west where they have no reputation, starting with identical product to AC/WS will mae it very hard for them to gain recognition like they had between ontreal/Ottawa and Toronto.
    Hoping City Express is recreated once Porter vacates Toronto Island airport.
