- On January 9th, 2022, another era in Canadian aviation history came to a close, with the final Dash 8-300 flights operating on behalf of Air Canada.
The very last flight was AC8436 from Timmins to Toronto, and I was on board!

Hi Am 101. Agreed. I would spend a couple of minutes to listen every time. It would good if there was a bit more of this, but I guess with all the checklists, ATC, etc it will be very rare.
Great speech by the captain; he almost had me choking up. I think he properly conveyed just how much the airplane meant to him on a personal and professional level. Hope he took a minute alone to thank that particular old warhorse for its service…. 👍🏼
I think I had a tear come to my eye when the captain said that speech, especially the part with patting the aircraft on the nose.

My dad flew these for Jazz for twenty plus years and just retired this past summer. I'm in flight school now following in his footsteps. Thanks for everything dad love you.

When one of the US operators stopped flying their Dash 8 series planes, there was a video put here, that captured the final flight. While it was emotional, it’s nowhere near as touching and heartfelt as this one. Another great video you’ve made. I never had the chance to fly in one, but having been around YYZ most my life, not once did I not see a Dash 8-100 or -300 take off or arrive there. Truly a great aircraft, and hopefully we’ll still see them from time to time
I was a young maintenance engineer when KTA arrived in calgary for Time Air. I am grateful to you Alex for showing me her last revenue flight. I retired last July and good old KTA outlasted me. She deserves a place to retire it was the first production dash 8 300 made and I have watched her work my whole career. Being first we thought KTA would be problematic but she wasnt. As a matter of fact after some initial teething problems she proceeded to to do her tour of duty without fuss.

Very nostalgic video. I was on the team that built that very aircraft. My function was engine control systems installation. (I guess they worked! LOL) The images of Timmins are also nostalgic - I was working there for Austin Airways as an engineer, until 1979. I recall unloading passengers on an Air Canada DC9 with a malfunctioning "air stair..." with a forklift! Man, that was fun.
The cold climate got to me, and in Dec, 1979 I hired on at deHavilland Canada, in Downsview, as a mechanic on the final assemble line of the DHC-7. Then I got in on the very first Dash-8s and the rest is history! I envy your flight on the last Air Canada journey from Timmins! The terminal has totally changed from what I recall - it's probably been rebuilt a couple of time at least, since I was there! Glad you shared this Last Official Flight of a Classic Dash - 8 with us!! Thank you!
My dad flew that very plane, back in his Time Air / Canadian Regional days in the 90s. Amazing to see just how long she's lasted.
The dash 8-100 was part of my early childhood I use to see them daily, The 300 I didn't see as much but it's part of my young adulthood, And finally the 400 is still going strong and I hope the 400 continues flying for years to come.
I flew the -100 and -300 a lot on the East coast. Now its either the Q400, CRJ or E175.
Following the retirement of the DHC-8-300s, Jazz Air's turboprop fleet comprises thirty-nine DHC-8-Q400s. The airline retired all of its DHC-8-100s (of which it once operated 64) as of April 2020, earlier than planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The carrier also operates a fleet of regional jets comprising fifteen CRJ200s, thirty-five CRJ900s, and twenty-five E175s.
@@thecaynuck4694 same. I always liked the 100 over the 300, but now that the classics are gone I fear that some flights to our airport are going back to the CRJ200.

As one of your subscribers from Trinidad & Tobago, the fact that the captain mentioned Trinidad & Tobago was quite touching. Dash 8s were an important part of the island life and air travel around the islands here before they were retired between like 2012-2014. Now, they've been replaced by ATRs that can't quite even step in the shoes of the Dash 8s in terms of reliability and overall nostalgia. Dash 8s were a part of many of our childhoods here on the islands and were part of most of our initial exposure to the world of aviation. Dash 8 classics will undoubtedly leave a permanent impression on aviation in these islands and by extension, wherever they were operated. Great video, Alex!

I found the announcement by the pilot to be quite touching. He probably had a few tears in his eyes when he patted the plane's nose.
I flew the Dash 8-102 for Air Atlantic from 1989 to 1995 and really enjoyed it.

Bonjour Alex. Just want to share with you my sincere admiration for this publication. You really have condensed in a short moment a huge part of long history. I have been working on this plane and her sisters for as long as they have existed. My aircraft mechanic experience have started before the 300 series started. I saw the 100 series, the 300 then the 400 going at Jazz ( formerly at Air Alliance that no one seems to remember)
It is with a smile and tears that i saw each one coming brand new then looking at them being retired.

Was a frequent passenger in these during most of my childhood flying from Vancouver/Calgary into and out of Castlegar (nicknamed "Cancel-gar" by locals because of how difficult it is to fly into the airport). Hearing it take-off at the 7:00 mark and then power down and get ready to cruise at the 7:55 mark is pure nostalgia. I definitely have been on that specific plane, lots of spending time in it circling Castlegar as the pilot looked for an opening in the cloud coverage to drop in through, or having to fly back to Van/Calgary because we couldn't make it in. Thanks for the video!
I’ve flown KTA 30 flight with just over of 40 hours of flight time on it. I’ve flown 1000 something flights on a Dash 8 aircraft. I will forever love the sound of those PW123 engines. Great memories on that bird. It’s my first airliner and I can not be more grateful.
The Classic Dash was the only plane I flew on as a child through masters degree experience from Northern BC, bringing me home from school and off to adventures all over Canada,and in some instances the world. For me, every adventure started on this plane so it's sad to see it go! Great video!
More evidence to support the theory that Time Fly's when your having fun . I seems like just yesterday I was cranking on the thousands of Tri-Wing screws holding these delicate machines together or chasing electronic gremlins responsible for switching on a multitude of nuisance caution lights. Not knowing then that the struggles weighing on us AME's while trying to embrace this new technology would result in such great memories being born at Time Air, refined at Canadian Regional, nurtured into the JAZZ years and finally maturing into a new era for the freight dogs. I honestly shed a tear during this fantastic trip report and thank you Alex for taking the Time to put it together for us. To the next operator, please put a new coat of paint on her before stripping the memories from the interior and filling with our online purchases! She deserves it.
I"ve flown in and out of Timmins (my hometown) on the Dash 8 - 100 & 300 several times and enjoyed every flight on that aircraft. My sister, Estelle Brill, was a passenger agent for Air Canada and it's various morph's to Jazz at the Timmins station for over 35 years. I always felt safe on that aircraft as it had a very enviable safety record. The engine sounds, although a tad oud, were IMO unique.
I worked at Calgary International when Time Air got these, in 1989. They had a big celebration! Big banners and everything! Time Air had such a small space at the south end of the airport. The place was packed with people for the start of service for these planes! Great tribute Alex!
Thank you for this video as it does hold a special place in my heart. My father worked for Air Ontario (formally Great Lakes Airline) when they purchased the Dash 8 to replace the Convair 580. My dad was the manager for all of the training at Air Ontario and unfortunately was forced to retire in 92-93. He did go onto to create his own company call Aerodyne Training where he would return to Air Ontario and teach through contract the mechanics and the Pilots on all of the ground training of the Dash 8.
I flew the Dash 8 100 and 300 for AirBC, through to Jazz for over 25 years! Love the airplane would take it anywhere. The mighty Dash!
A heartfelt thank you, Alex, for this beautiful tribute to a wonderful aircraft. I especially loved how you included the whole of the captain's speech, which was well worth preserving for posterity. It was such a nostalgia trip for me to watch this, after all the years I lived in Northern Ontario (Elliot Lake) and flew to and from Toronto more times than I could count on the classic Dash 8, either from Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie. One thing few people understood was that the quietest seats on these aircraft, especially the Dash 8-300, were at the very rear, most distant from the propeller noise. Another detail -- many (most?) of the Dash 8-300s in Jazz service had a different design of overhead bins, with a flip-up door that allowed somewhat bigger bags to fit in, although they still couldn't fit a regular roller bag. I think Time Air might have been the only airline to take delivery with these old-style swing-down bins that were also used on the Dash 8-100, but I'm not sure. We rarely saw the Dash 8-300 aircraft with those types of bins in Northern Ontario.

I loved working the 300 when we had 2 flight attendants! I remember serving a lovely boxed meal and free Wine to passengers flying to YTS and YAM!!

Of course, I sure remember there were two flight attendants, and yummy boxed meal come with sandwiches before Air Ontario Strike in Feb-March 1997 after that everything changed; one flight attendant and boxed meal disappeared :(
Out of curiosity, were you FA YXU based? I sure remember FA named Kim from YXU have flown with deaf children on Sunday at night between YTS and YYZ in the late 90s.
Time Air, Canadian Regional, Air BC, Air Ontario, Jazz, AC Express, North Cariboo - so many memorable flights I've had on the 100/300s - always tried to align my schedule to snag a flight on the 300 instead of the 400. The sounds, the vibrations, the way the props would unsync and sync - loved every minute of my countless flights.
This was an extraordinary farewell video to one of Air Canada's most familiar aircraft. A touching video Alex and thank you for sharing the experience with us. Fair skies and smooth landings!
Sad to see such a reliable aircraft get retired....guess we all have to retire one day though. Hope they extend its life as a cargo unit. Glad you were able to be part of that last flight... and what a great speech by the Captain!

To add to the significance of the Dash 8, for many the Dash 8 was their first 'real' airline job after flying in the bush. My dad's first airline career was with CRA flying the Dash 8, now he's off flying bigger and better things!
My dad's friend flies a lightly modified -300 for the Swedish Coast Guard, he's said that its a fabulous plane to fly and to operate in general (especially compared to the Casa C212 they had before) I've always liked the stubbier dashes so seeing them get retired is a bit sad altough theres probly a lot of airlines operating in the north of canada and other place who will be quick to snap them up for parts or to fly...

Thanks for this video, I know it's more than an year ago but still I remember clearly. The day before this, I was dealing with this specific aircraft with a big snag, dedicated my whole 12hrs shift, made it serviceable. I can't forget the supervisor saying me "Thank you" for like 20 times straight, which they normally don't do lol. I had no Idea why he was doing that but later I found out that I made the second last flight serviceable, Toronto to Timmins. It was such an honor to take part in aviation history.
Another great Canadian aviation product and kudos to the mechanics that kept her flying for over 30 years!
Love this so much. My first flying experience was on a Dash -3. So many first flights taken on these. The sound is wonderful. Living in Sudbury, Ontario I knew once I saw the 300's replaced by CRJ's it was only a matter of time.

Hard to describe how we feel after having flown these birds for 33 years. It's like loosing an old friend.
There's hardly anything more satisfying than selecting discing and hear the growl of the props entering ground beta after a good Xwind landing, with the ailerons full in the wind and the nose wheel still in the air. ;-)
Great video and tribute. The Dash 8 will always be my favorite. My first job as an A&P was for CommutAir on the Q200 and Q300’s. Awesome aircraft. I will never forget my time on them keeping them in the air.
I've been in the rear-facing seat "13A" only once on a 20-minute hop from YVR to YYJ and that was enough! Talk about unwanted eye contact!

Back in 1989 while working on this airplane as a flight test electrical mechanic, at the Downsview plant; our instructions were to do each task as if it had to last 30 years. I guess that worked !!
Nice tribute. I had a lot of safe and smooth flights around eastern Canada in the 90s on dash 8's. I often flew on one that had very few seats and cargo in the rear

My brother-in-law was Arconics Technicians and Dowty Aerospace (Messier-Dowty, now Safran) made the Landing Gear. This Landing Gear is still displayed in the Finely Rd entrance. The display Gear and a number Dash-8 300 Landing Gear have my QI 45 stamp on the nameplate.
Had many Family Day Open Houes at Wilson Rd has the Dash-8 Tug.
Retired by Jazz or not, I’ll still fly this airplane at Perimeter Aviation in Manitoba for the foreseeable future. 😉
Fond memories of this aircraft when visiting my Canidan friends. Had the privlige to fly many times between Toronto and Sudbury on Air Canada. Many times I was on the last flight out at night and the flight to Timmons was boarding at the same time. Once trip I was assigned to the back row of 3 seats all to myself when rest of plane was full. Always felt safe on this loud but soothing hummmmmmmmmmm of those giant propellers that seamed only inches from your head when in a window seat up front.
I had a great time flying this aircraft type in Air Canada Express over the past 16 years. This includes a trip 10 years ago when I was 6 years old with my parents and I going on a trip to Windsor from Toronto back in December 2011 to visit family and friends. Still have those memories, especially the green Jazz classic livery 💚

It is a very beautiful tribute to a fantastic plane. You did an excellent job and a beautiful description of its history in our company. It allowed me to discover your TH-cam channel at the same time.
However, I want to mention that it is too often forgotten that Air Alliance was also part of the portrait of Air Canada regional carriers at the time of Air Ontario and Air Nova ... I did there more than 8500 hours on the Dash-8 100/300 in the 80s and 90s. A little reminder that we were also part (and we still are part ...) of this story.

Great video as usual. As I watch this on 15 January, today was the last operational flight of the DE Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo which has been in service with the RCAF for more than 50 years.

Alex: Thanks for that most heart felt closure to such a significant part of Canadian aviation history. For me great memories both as an aviation follower and business traveler. The Dash 8-300 formed part of my regular business travel routine on 100's of flights . A great recording of those familiar sights and sounds, in particular the start up and shutdown of those Pratt and Whitney turboprop engines. Thanks to all the flight crews and their skill in safely operating this great aircraft.

Really enjoyed your video ! Our Son F/O Stephen Lucki flew the Dash 8 300 and 100 and this particular aircraft for over 2 years before moving on to Air Canada ! He really enjoyed his tine at Jazz and flying the Dash 8 !
Fantastic video for a rather sad day for Canadian aviation. The captains speech was incredibly well spoken, and a fantastic tribute to a bird with so much history. I’m lucky to be in flight training in Thunder Bay, where classic Dashs are a very common site still, but as you mentioned, it won’t be the same without AC flying them.
One my favourite videos of yours for sure! Living in YQB, the Classic holds a special place in my heart as it's been reliably serving my airport for decades, even in bad weather when no other aircraft type could operate. I'm shocked. I thought they were flying these for longer. Made a lot of memories on these. I saw a lot still active at Toronto and Montreal and some on smaller East coast cities, so figured they were flying for a couple more years with AC Jazz. Well, there's still smaller airlines in Canada operating them.
I’m pretty sure those are charter airlines that still fly them, but correct me if I’m wrong.

Always love flying regional. Just the other day down here in the states I was on a Erj 145 from Toledo to Chicago, and it was a great flight with views of the Loop on approach.

Alex, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! My Dad started on the Dash 8 with Air BC when the 300's were brand new out of Edmonton City Centre. The 300 is my favourite model and I have been on and flown in the jumposeat of all the 100's and 300's that Air BC (Jazz Aviation) had. It was heart warming to hear someone outwardly express the exhilaration during initial acceleration on take-off. SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES!

This is dedication, this is a turboprop i what i grew up on flying in the Eastern Caribbean by Liat-The Caribbean Airline LIAT had them all, Dash 8 100/200/300 then later getting the Q models. In the early 2000's the Dash 8 was dominat over the ATR in the Eastern Caribbean, as much as 8 airlines flew the Dash 8 as apposed to two flying ATR's, when came to fleet reneral everyone ran to ATR as it seem to be the only choice, many said the Q400 is to big and would not work for these short small hops in the Caribbean, you have to be a true fan to do this video i thank you :) !!!!
Realized I didn't leave a comment the first time, but damn I going to miss these planes. Flew on the -100 and -300 year after year and that engine sound, especially the start up sequence, gets me every time. So glad I got 4 flights this summer on the mighty -300. Ended up flying on GKTA 2 times, and on my last flight I actually had GKTA and the seat right behind yours. Loved this video, long live the Jazz Dash-8 in our hearts!
The YYZ-YTS route goes right over my house so I stood outside in the freezing cold listening to the buzz of the q300 going overhead for the final time, really sad
It feels oddly Surreal, That 30 years ago I was one of the 1st customers to fly on the Dash- 8 between Winnipeg and Kenora Ontario. Hard to believe that all those years have passed, good times always when it comes to Air Ontario and Canada 🇨🇦

A beautiful tribute to a magnificent aircraft!
I worked for an Airline in CYAM that received the first production DASH 8 100. It flew under the colours of Nor Ontair. If I am not mistaken it was SN 2. I think it was one of the first planes with the newer type glass cockpits. Then they made the 200 which put a plug in the fuselage to make it longer. I knew some of the fellas who went to work at De Havilland in Downsview ON to become test pilots on the Dash 8 Program. I remember when they used to do testing on the plane at KCIU in Michigan not far from CYAM. Seems like yesterday. Great video Thank You for your share it was awesome.

Was a long time ago but the last time I flew on a dash 8 was into Penticton BC. At about 1800 ft off the lake we hit turbulence and bumped around a bit and all at once fell out out the sky and dropped for 5 or 6 seconds but landed safely. Loved the sensation and have not had it duplicated yet.

I’m a sentimental fool on the best of days…. I’ve always loved the DASH since I first flew on one 20 some years ago. And I’ve flown on this guy a few times- including from Timmins. So it makes me sad to see it retired from Air Canada service. End of an era. Looking forward to seeing the paint chips fixed up and at its new home on display
I didn't even realize these aircraft were being retired I just recently saw one in Victoria about a month ago. Cool to see a youtube channel cover a moment like this in aviation history though.
