one of the best weeks of my life, spring break 1990 in South Padre Island, got a tattoo from a guy with a wooden leg and survived a drunken night in Matamoros!
You're very welcome. He was an iconic and friendly character that surfed longboard and charged big waves in Mex. Again, great to have some of his work, stoked ..
I was there a year ago in a business trip and yeah, I agree that SPI is amazing and that’s because it is so popular among many Mexicans, especially from Monterrey, it is basically our closest beach we have (4 hours away). And I will never forget that sunset I saw it with my eyes.
SPI definitely has the bluest water but it isn't the only beach with blue water on the Texas Coast. You can find blue water from Matagorda Island & Mustang Island all the way down to SPI.
Hey Nick, inspired by your channel I did a week long road trip across all of Arizona last week and it was amazing! The only place I went to that had bums was downtown Phoenix, the rest of the state was perfect. I went to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, all of Route 66, The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, Tucson, Saguaro NP, Bisbee, Tombstone, and Sierra Vista. Saguaro NP was the highlight of the trip as well as Seligman on Route 66!
Watching this from the other side of the world. I am serving overseas and your videos help keep me feeling connected to the U.S. Thanks, and best wishes to all for 2024.
Pretty nice place, especially during the summer and early fall. Sept and early October are great, after the big summer crowds and before the winter northern winds.
My best friend and I, worked at different banks, and in 1988 there was a February holiday...in Monday. We both called in the previous Friday - and took a spur of the moment "road trip", I packed a giant ice chest , and we went to Pasre ! The most memorable things about the trip; my car a 1985 Chevy Cavalier.... the left headlight kept going out - kept unplugging itself, and we got stopped MANY times by State troopers and Highway patrol. The BEST thing, my friend had packed EVERYTHING - even an electric skillet, and after getting to Padre, the next morning - she was cooking breakfast on the balcony of the cheap motel ! Also, when driving back North toward home ---- the last day - I got off to get gas, she went to sleep - and I drove over 1 hour the WRONG way ! When she awoke, we weren't much closer to home ---- I didn't tell her until years later !
I was there in 1969 at 16 yrs. old. Didn't have all the buildings, we went deep sea fishing and to the beach where a girl with us got a bad sting by a jelly fish. You could walk with your girl friend for miles it seemed and not see any one else. I enjoyed it. The country was a lot nicer than it is today.
Years ago we drove from Marquette, Michigan to South Padre in an almost new 1964 Lincoln Continental. We got drunk as skunks, and then Bill got us stuck in the sand when we drove past the pavement onto the sand..I found two flattened metal trash cans we stuck under the tires to get us outta there..the good ole days!
Love this place! My buddy moved to cc and we visited about 4 times in the past 2 years. Almost moved here. Had fun camping on the beach, which is the best part of this undeveloped coastline!
Tx beaches arent so bad, the water color just varies day to day and from one time of yr to another. This day for example is actually a pretty bad day for South Padre. Usually from May through Oct its much prettier. North winds push browner brackish waters out of rivers and bays out into the gulf. South or easterly winds bring in blue clear warmer waters. Its just abt that simple. The waters are all pushed out and choppy in this video with a strong north wind. I can tell just by seeing it and being very familiar with the coast.
I have been out here. My uncle and I went out there and rented a boat and we saw pink dolphins and several cool birds in the bay. I also liked the elevated trails they have there.
Nick the island has 3 tourist seasons. Spring break in March and April. Winter Texans in January and February, but also the rich Mexicans come from Monterey and Mexico city in July and August to escape the heat of the Mexican desert. They also own a lot of. The condos and Real estate on the much of the island to the surprise of many. Brownsville and Laguna Heights provide a lot of the maids, waiters, etc, that take care of the tourists needs. Sometimes it takes several hours to cross the only bridge to the island when concerts or other activities, Next time pay the ten dollars to enter Isla Blanca park at the south end and enjoy. You did a great job capturing sunrise on gulf.
@@dguard24 May is fairly low key time between tourist seasons but can be warm. This year with three LNG plants being built nearby and expansion at SpaceX the countryside is growing rapidly. An extra 20,000 people in the area making the island more popular. But the soothing gulf breeze and kind people are still abundant and will welcome your return.

Another great video, Nick. Just wanted to say thanks for showing me Parts of Texas I have yet never visited. South Padre Island looks nicer and cleaner than other parts of The Texas Coast. It’s actual Mexican food considering that Matamoros is just across the border so it’s as close as you’re gonna get to Northern style Mexican food any more north you go in Texas and the food is actually Tex Mex but you wouldn’t know that because I can see you’re from some other place where Taco Bell is Mexican food. Glad you got to enjoy the local beach I grew up with! I like it because it's a natural beach that's not full of artificial sand, has amenities but is not overly developed, & is a very peaceful place outside of the month of March. That said, locals don't go there or stay there during Spring Break; they leave in February & come back in April. The level of disrespect & litter is insane, so its probably for the best that we're not around.
