The Johnny Winter Live And Album changed my life. I was just 14 and starting to listen to Hendrix, The Who, Led Zep, but Johnny's music rang out as 'True' from the fist time I heard him, same as later with SRV. Remained a huge fan, caught him in a small night club in Albuquerque in the early 90's when he was frail, but still delivering the blazing leads and screaming blues voice we all love. Thank you Mr. WInter, and the Guitar Meets Science crew. In this day and age, we cannot forget these amazing artists.

Immense passion and talent! His brother Edgar gives one of the best interviews you will ever hear. These brothers have contributed so much beautiful music to the world.
Early 1970s Edgar Winter song called Frankenstein, was ok, but dance halls just was no way to get the ladies to get up and dance to, yep maybe one of the worst ever, to dance to, yet dance floor would fill up with partners, Not me, white guys dance pretty bad anyway and even women just really a wrong tune for it,, but to a really bad song for the effort, well, just not 'nuff, heh, and Colo Springs as I recall was the town
These guys, Johnny and Edgar Winter, were and are the greatest. Just total dynamite. They were also accompanied by some of the greatest instrumentalists in music history. There is so much more that I want to say about the Winter brothers that I am left without words.
I was fortunate to experience Johnny's raw power live in person and it left me discombobulated. 90 minutes flew by like it was nothing. A full-on, psychedelic, almost trance-like musical climax like no other.
I saw Johnny back in '93 at the CNE in Toronto......He opened for Thorogood ! What a blast ! We got soaked in the rain but rocked our Souls that night. Rest in Peace Johnny ! You are dearly missed.
Blew Thorogood OFF the stage - the greatest Johnny B Goode ever played in this town & earned a standing O in the warm up spot - unheard of, far as I know, here in Halifax NS
@@andrewgillis8572 i was in 15 th row , 45 min show was worth the full ticket price , most of my crowd left 1/2 way thru THOORGOOD ..HE HAD A bad guitar sound that , couldnt hear him for the sax . Johnny was schorchin .11 min ,Mean town blus , that nite .
Johnny's been a core to my musical heroes. I heard his version of Jumping' Jack Flash before any other interpretation and none hold a candle to him. Only got to see him live once. He opened for George Thorogood. I went to the concert to see Johnny and he's the only opening act to get a standing ovation and come out to do an encore!
Wow man, you did a great job with this story about Johnny. Best I've ever seen if I'm being honest. Johnny didn't have the easiest journey but he truly did defy all the odds in more ways than one. He's gone but he'll never be forgotten and like I posted earlier, he's the greatest guitar player of all time alongside SRV and Hendrix - it's gotta be a three way tie for me because those guys really inspired my own playing and life in different ways. Kinda hard to explain but it's like you knew them when you didn't and I still mourn each of their passing more than some of my own family members. Like them, I did a lot of drugs during those times so maybe I'm out of my mind but that's how I felt.......and still do. Thank you for creating this! I learned some things about Johnny and Edgar that I never knew before
Thank you so much that really is a huge compliment! Agreed, definitely the big three right there in terms of all time players. Drugs are a mother..... I'm glad to hear someone like yourself were able to get past them. It takes a lot of people out unfortunately.
A real guitar giant, all time inspiration and influence since I was a kid, his albums Johnny Winter and...Live and Captured Live are extraordinary pieces of music and I have to say that his all time collaborator and friend Rick Derringer was the perfect partner for his playing making these albums two masterpieces of blues and rock when of course all his records are completely legendary. It's really disgraceful what management did to him but unfortunately many artists were victims of these practices for decades particularly with early jazz musicians, however Johnny will be always in my heart and will remain a strong reason to pick the guitar and play just the same he was when I was very young. Love forever Johnny ❤❤❤❤❤
I was lucky to have seen both Johnny and his brother Edgar several times in the early 70’s and I saw Johnny at the Dallas House of Blues in the early 2000’s. He had to be escorted onto the stage due to health issues but as soon as he sat down with his guitar he rocked like I remembered him from the 70’s.
The 'Johnny Winter And' live album w/ Rick Derringer is my fav rock/blue guitar record. His playing on the rockin "Good Morning Little School Girl" and the slower blues "Its My Own Fault" are the best guitar playing I've heard. ..and I've heard a lot.
My #1 guitar slinger is Jimi, (who I witnessed twice) and then Winter-who I also did catch in the mid-1970s...#3 SRV, #4 Jeff Beck, #5 Jimmy Page, #6 Pete Townshend.....I could go on, but there are so many great ones, it becomes pointless to list them!
Johnny's music means a lot to me, thanks for making this video. Was kind of shocked to hear that Paul Nelson passed away too earlier this year. May they both rock on in rock'n'roll heaven
DAMN I MEET and talked with Paul after a Johnny show in 2006 ? in Halifax . He was a cool , laid back ,informative , friendly soul who was hangin with a good friend , shared a few laughs too .at the time i could see he was supporting Johnny on stage and was in his corner , but didnt know the back story of him managing and helping him offstage . im pissed i didnt get the chance to Thank Him for those efforts . ill bet he was thinking about when Muddy Waters didnt have record deal in the mid 7o s and Johnny got him onto his label ,Blue Sky ,and toured with Muddy n produced and played on MUDDYS records . till Muddy passed in 83 . Well GOOD oN YOU PAUL NELSON , THANK YOU For helping preserve a Living Legend . My CONDOLENCES TO His Family and Friends . He was a Friendly Good Man the 1/2 hour i spent with him . R.I.P. Paul , you deserve it . fr. a J.W. Fan since 1974 .
wt5ku he was still in his party treat and hippy dippy freak type stage . . . .trippy . That must have been a cRaZy show . anything come to mind about his antics on stage back then ?
God bless Johnny and Edgar! They are both Rock n Roll heroes of mine, but sadly underrated in general. I was lucky enough to see Johnny several times and do a meet and greet, which was a real highlight. Saw Edgar once and have the utmost respect for him. Johnny was the real deal and will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for putting this excellent video together~I learned a lot! 👍🎸
That must have been so cool to meet him, as well as of course seeing him play live. He brought a lot of fire to the Blues in such a unique way. Thank you kindly, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
I went with my friend Brian Miller to go see Johnny more than any other person or band. He was awesome! R.I.P. Johnny , you were one of the absolute best musicians of my lifetime and I will never forget you.
I listen to Johnny Winter since the 70’s and this guitarist has always impressed me, he was also good singer, great slide player too, I deciphered some of his solos and every time I was impressed by his technique and musicality, Johnny Winter is for me the greatest blues guitarist !
Got to see him at Cobo Hall in Detroit when he was with Floyd Radford, Richard Hughes and Randy Hobbs, great show. Last time was in 91 when he opened for Joe Cocker @@guitarmeetsscience

Thank you so much for your kind words I'm glad you enjoyed it, and it must have been just incredible to have seen him live back in those days. Johnny truly was one of a kind in every way!
Clapton showcased Johnny at one of his Crossroads Guitar Festivals, the reaction of Derek Trucks, playing alongside Johnny on Highway 61 is a thing of joy.
Freddie King, T Bone Walker, Sam Lightning Hopkins, Albert Collins, SRV and Jimmy Jonny Winter and Edgar Winter and many more you Damn tighter got The Blues.
I got to mix monitors for him about a year before he passed. Born in 58 and was well aware of who he was. I played and loved his music. Especially when he rocked it up like the Saints and Sinners album. I learned a lot of guitar licks from that album.
Damn, I've heard about the monitor mixers. Is it true that you are the most fired and rehired of all positions? Somebody told me that they would get canned from one gig, go off to the next big star, and then be back at the one gig a year or so later when that star had already forgotten who they were. It was like musical chairs. Respect!
@@guitarmeetsscience I have never been fired. I worked on a live radio broadcast in a theatre that housed 5 radio stations. Long story but the only reason I lost that job was because eventually Live Nation owned the theatre and the radio stations. They killed the Saturday night show which was second only to the opry as far as live show broadcast on radio every Saturday night. They ran the building into the ground. Was shut down for code violations. They put it up for sale. city bought it and I went right back to work as a theatre technician in that theatre and am heading there in bit as we have Ricky Skaggs performing tonight.I also worked for a regional sound company in the upper Ohio Valley area. I turned down full time work from the sound company. Mostly because I did quite well in the theatre and did not want to lose that job. I have seen some performers run through monitor engineers. Most professional acts that want some thing very specific carry their own engineers with them. some are jus to cheap to pay anyone a salary.
@@guitarmeetsscience With someone like Axl Rose yes. have worked on tours where the sound company would have a half a dozen mixers on the tour. Of course they had other stuff to do if they were not mixing. Some carry their own engineers. The sound and lighting company just send capable engineers out to mix it if needed and to get everything hooked up and packed up properly . Some are tooo cheap to pay their own engineers or nobody they know will work for them as a mixer because they know they are difficult.
Un freaking believable! Yeah I could see Axl doing that for sure. Possibly DLR as well. Yep, I had a feeling you probably had some war stories. It comes with the territory of the monitor mixer - the true artists that don't get their due. Sorry for the late response, TH-cam has been up to its old tricks again.
I WAS 18 and honored to be back stage at a Gainesville, FL. Show in 1970. I met Johnny and his brother Edgar. It was a night I do not remember well. I was pretty stoned.
Wow as a lifelong fan of Johnny's I appreciate this very much. You obviously did your research and it shows. You also shared some insights that I never knew about him. He will forever be one of the greatest guitarists I have ever heard, Your right it is a shame that the Roch Hall of fame has not inducted him as he so richly deserves. Then again there are a lot of other great artists that this sham of an organization hasn't recognized either but thats another story. Thanks so much for this, great job.
Saw him as well as his brother several times in the 70’s-both amazing musicians. One of my favorite lyrics of all time-“sometimes I know its kinda hard to tell but I’m still alive and well”.

Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, 13th Floor Elevator, Shiva's Head Band, Sir Douglas Quintet, and allthe blues oriented groups that followed them (say Janis Joplin, etc.)---the bands I grew up listening to!!!! Nothing like them then, and still nothing like them yet! I'm 74 years old and still love running up their music---immediately takes me back to the best music of the century!
I saw Johnny Winter at The House of Blues in Orlando Florida in 2000 or 2001. He was so drunk (or high!) he could barely stand. He had two guys escort him on stage, and one hung the guitar around his neck. He still rocked that crowd. One of the best concerts I've seen. Truly an amazing musician.
I was amazed by Johnny the very first time I heard him! I was in jr. High when I purchased “The Electric BB King” album and got hooked on finding the blues. On the way to his concert I saw him on the freeway in the back of a Limo kicking back,(couldn’t miss his hair and hat through the tint😁)I honked waved like a school girl and he just tipped his and continued 😎😊
I became a fan in my mid teens and started to see him live when I came to my driving age. He frequently came to a small venue club near me where I saw him frequently. One night I hung outside the back of the club to meet him. The staff keep discouraging a bunch of us until their was 8 of us standing and then he came out to the black stretched limo waiting for him. He was super cool talking with us and signing autographs. I miss him and his live shows he always Rocked the house down 🎸 🙏🏻
Both JONNY AND EDGER were the music I listened to all through the seventies and still to this day . Totally underrated geniuses .R.I.P. you both are forever in my hall of fame . THANK YOU BOTH . MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT . ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍👍 I caught Johnny twice before he passed. The second was shortly before he passed. I was in the restroom and the door came flying open and it was him and one of his crew. He had his britches down and headed into the stall as soon as he entered, LoL. I sat about ten feet away from him during the show and I could tell that he had nemonia or something as his nose was running steady and his eyes watery. He sized up the crowd before he started playing and focused on mostly rock stuff and his trademark slide playing. He had his double rattle snake hat on and you could barely see his blue dragon tattoo that always fascinated me. I felt that he was determined to go out with his boots on (on the road) and then I heard he was going to continue touring in Europe and I thought to myself that's a lot to take on in his condition. Then later, I heard he passed.. The man was born to play the guitar no doubt in my mind whatsoever. 💫
I never had a chance to see Johnny Winter , the Legend, live, bummer! He was in Atlantic City, NJ, a few years ago right before he passed away, an 1.5 hour drive from me, I was low on funds and didn’t go. R.I.P. Johnny, you were one of a kind!
Damn! Yeah it would have been awesome to build a catch him live. He always did put in 100%, even though sometimes he wasn't in the best state on stage he still gave it his all no matter what. One of a kind

Johnny Winter is the one artist that I have seen more than any other in concert. I saw him in 1969 in South Florida at an all day show, he and Edgar both jammed on stage, it was epic. My last time seeing him play was at a metal club in Fort Lauderdale around 2010 or 2011, it was my last show watching him live. He was already totally blind by this time and needed help to get to his stool and was handed his guitar by a stage hand, and he still tore it up with almost the same energy of that first show I saw in '69. I took a friend in California that had no knowledge of music to see JW in Palo Alto California in a club built inside a quonset hut, The Keystone Palo Alto around 1990 or so, the venue had the worst acoustics on the planet but we got front row seats so we were getting our sound from the stage. My friend with no knowledge of music and who had never been to a concert sat mesmerized the whole show watching Johnny's fingers flying over the fretboard without blinking. After that my friend turned into a total music freak, he went out bought everything he could find from JW. I created a monster and it was great. JW was a firebrand, his shows were always more full of energy than a nuke powerplant although that last show was a little more subdued but still awesome especially on slide and he totally ripped on RR Hochie Koo and Highway 61.
@@philliphawkins6905 Man you made my day! Thank you so much, and I'm glad you dug this one. Johnny's life story is definitely pretty fascinating. Glad to have you aboard!!!
I love his version of I’ll do anything for your love. Clapton’s version just doesn’t have that broken heart feel to it. When Johny passed I felt such a deep sorrow. It caught me off guard. I don’t know why but I felt a connection like it was personal. I was doing night calls in Beaumont & Port Arthur TX as a locksmith and this radio show came on talking about the history there in Texas about Janis Joplin & the Winter brothers. I saw him in Mpls MN at the Cabooze bar. Great show, he was wearing his cowboy hat and used the brim to find the microphone when he sang.

@@andrewgillis8572 Johnny thought that he was a joke, & made a point to blow him off the stage!
A true legend and Blues lover. Both him and his brother have certainly made an impact in my playing.
I saw Johnny Winter twice, once in Cleveland and once In London Ontario, he was amazing on both occasions.👍
I live right down the road from where Johnny was born. We all love Johnny in these parts.
Janis Joplin also came from Beaumont TX.

I have his first 2 records in mint condition because my dad was a DJ while in college. They are truly unique albums pushing the limits of the blues.
"Still Alive and Well!" 🎸
Yes, you are Johnny.
The Firebird 🔥 guitar is happening.
Your blues guitar is eternal. ♾️
"AND" made me Fall in Love with Johnny ...
and being a Keyboardist , And Hearing his Brother Edgar , Took me to the Heavens
I have the extreme honour of seeing him play in Vancouver twice in the late 80’s. Absolutely incredible memories.
Likewise. Commodore Ballroom. Amazing shows.
I was fortunate to have seen Johnny perform many times. He was the best.
Him and his brother are so important to music history. Who needs a rock hall. We know. Thank you Winter bros for all the inspiration
He was simply the best! The true definition of underrated.
Wonderfully written and crafted presentation and tribute to Johnny--a hero on more than a musical level, if that weren't enough!
Thank you so much - I appreciate the kind words 🙏
The Texas GuitarSlinger! Johnny Winter was AMAZING! He always tore it up on 'Highway 61(Revisited)'....
R.I.P. ✌ 👍
Good Picks . ☠ 🎸 .
Yess love this thank you. Next should be the bluesman himself B.B King.
Thank you - BB was a total legend
R.I.P. In May of '71, a classmate convinced me to go to see JW And. Unbelievable talent, will never forget that night in Pittsburgh. Love and respect

First time I listened to a Johnny Winter album, I was a fan.
Ive been a huge Johnny Winter fan for 50years,my 1st album ever was live and,he was awesome, RIP,JOHNNY WINTER
I was fortunate enough to see Johnny preform in 5 different decades. Always Awesome! Mis You, Brother!
That is pretty damn awesome!
Johnny Winter is my all time favorite artist. Not just guitar player, singer, producer, songwriter, everything.
Very special indeed ⭐
Saw johnny many times and he always delivered. He was the greatest. A true master of the guitar. I loved his music.
Saw Johnny live at the Caravan of Dreams in Ft. Worth Texas... He played his ass off. It was beautiful 😍 so happy i got to see the legend!
Loved Johnny since I was a teen in the 70's, got to see him 4 times. Captured Live is still one of my favorites.
That must have been awesome to see him live
Got to see him at Cobo Hall in Detroit when he was with Floyd Radford, Richard Hughes and Randy Hobbs, great show. Last time was in 91 when he opened for Joe Cocker @@guitarmeetsscience

My older brother introduced me to Johnny in 1971 when i was 14. Saw Johnny live 9 times. Saw Edgar 4 yrs ago...

@@guitarmeetsscience I have tons of them. Some great and some bad.
I WAS 18 and honored to be back stage at a Gainesville, FL. Show in 1970. I met Johnny and his brother Edgar. It was a night I do not remember well. I was pretty stoned.
Damn!!! Pretty freaking cool!!!

Second Winter was a favorite of mine when it came out. Then the live album came out....whew!
Wow - yep that sounds like Johnny. No matter what shape he was in for the most part he would just dig in and let it rip. Must have been a great show!
Haha Right on That's freaking awesome!
I miss him and his live shows he always Rocked the house down 🎸 🙏🏻
That is an awesome story!

Both JONNY AND EDGER were the music I listened to all through the seventies and still to this day . Totally underrated geniuses .R.I.P. you both are forever in my hall of fame . THANK YOU BOTH . MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT . ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍👍
I caught Johnny twice before he passed.
What a hell of a story! Thanks for that!!!

I'm a JW fan since I was in Jr High, 50 years back.
The Brothers Winter were my favorite band, outside of Captain Beyond.
That is a very cool story - thank you for sharing that! Yes you did create a monster in a great way haha
Thank you for this. Keeping his memory, Ive been to many conserts but I will never forget when I saw Johhny Winter. Incredible playing.

Awesome music, musical genius, great guitar player, still blowing away guitar players of today

He played like no one else. Total badass.
And he even looked like no one else!...I mean, he was so unhealthy-looking, so skinny his entire career!...He made Hendrix look like a weightlifter!...and Hendrix weighed around 140lbs...Johnny had to be even less than that!
