I think where Buddy was really underestimated was his voice. Everybody talks about what a great drummer he was but I could put his voice against any soul singer and Buddy wouldn't fare badly. Man his voice was wonderful. Hell of a songwriter to I might add.

Agreed. The track Stop off the Band of Gypsys live album really showcases his dynamic singing abilities. Even on his earlier solo albums prior to playing with Jimi, he was such an awesome singer! The fact that he sang like that, all while playing the drums at the same time, is a testament to how great he really was.

...I met Buddy at the Detroit Airport circa 2007 ,while he was enroute to his residence in Dallas Tx.We were waiting on our connecting flights.
I happened to be with a camera team and he didn't mind me spontaneously interviewing him.I asked him about the B.O.G. and he seemed to go into a trance about the other worldly experience it was.He was very generous and kind to the me and the team and invited me to his house to Jam.
He said his was working on his next album titled "In the Basement ".
    Great Musician and human being.
    Thank you Buddy..

I met Buddy in the late 80's in Chicago, maybe 88 or so. Driving a cab, still remember the ride. 2500 Addison to 1601 Lunt for you Chicago folks. Of all the 1000's of rides I had, I remember the details of this one. Got a call on the radio to pick up Miles on the 3rd floor. Just another ride. He wasn't ready and I had to wait. He asked me to help him carry things to the cab. Turned out it was a bunch of guitars. As we were going along I kept looking in the mirror and I thought, Jesus this is Buddy Miles! I had to ask and he was ahead of me and said he was. Very humble guy it seemed. He said he was in Chicago for the opening of a bar and then to Los Angeles to record a best of Buddy Miles album. I told him I saw him in El Paso in 1970 but I couldn't remember who he opened for. If you can imagine all the shows he must have played and he remembered it was The James Gang. Right. He invited me to the show that night free. I was thrilled. But when I got home, my wife was sick and said I should go with my friend. I am sort of old school folks, your place is with your lady so I didn't go. Never did hear if he made that album, never got to use my passes. He said that 2 of the guitars were Jimi's but I don't know how you could verify that. I told him his retirement fund was in the trunk. He seemed genuinely amused that I thought they were worth anything. Never heard anything about Buddy after that until he died a few years back.

Hey, I used to drive a cab, and I've met Buddy Miles, too! Danbeau, if you saw Buddy's show in El Paso, 1970, then you saw my brother play, for he was one of Buddy's guitarists at that time! I remember riding in a limo with Buddy and my brother after they did a show at the Boston Gardens (1971). About 20 odd years after that, I was driving a cab in the suburbs of Wash. D.C. when I drove the members of Foghat to Reagan National Airport to catch a plane! True story.

Houston about 1970 I was working at a dog show in the 2 level parking lot of the Houston Coliseum, I was 13. We heard some drums from next door, looked thru some glass doors and could see concert lights. After trying the doorknob, we were surprised when it opened. so we went in! Not knowing any better we proceeded to climb the stairs to the stage and walked up to a big black drummer wearing a ratty sweatshirt with 30 or more holes in the front. I had heard of Buddy Miles since we were starting to learn guitar and could play "Down by the River". He was very nice to us ,asking if we were coming to the show- we replied no 'cause we didn't drive and had no ride. I think he would have put us on the list if we could get there. Anyway we left and later that day scored a ride to the the show (cost us $4.50) Deep Purple and Buddy Miles my first concert ever and still play guitar and keys to this day! I really believe he was a gentle soul! R.I.P.

A legend for a long time & if Buddy Rich says i like how you play which he was not famous for when it came to Rock drummers & that means you're doing something right & Buddy did that with such passion & sometimes too much passion, but he was a great player & when Mitch Mitchell called him the cement mixer he did so with a smile. He was a larger-than-life man & was lucky to see him even if only once. I can only recall Buddy Rich talking about one other drummer he admired which was Danny Seraphine & rightly so. Buddy got to play with so many great guitar players & one i loved was Mr. Rocky Athas & they made some killer blues & rock. Missing Buddy & he may have not been the Neil Peart type he was the heartbeat of so much great music. 🥁🎸

Buddy loved to ride and he loved to party…he rode his big trike with a group of us on Harleys in Novato, CA back in the 70’s, it had to be about 1975, maybe earlier. He partied with us and was so much fun! He was one of the great musicians and singers…❤️

I finally saw him in what might have been his last full gig at The Sebastian Beach Inn, Florida, just weeks or months before he passed. :/ He gave it all that night. The band said it was time to finish. He was whipped. Folks kept yelling for Down by the River, so he stayed. 18minutes later he left the stage, I cried. Sweet man. RIP Bud

As it has happened with so many talented people like Buddy, they are not properly managed during their careers. Some survive bad management to find good management. Some are permanently crippled and never get back on top. My all time favorite recording featuring Buddy is the Santana-Buddy Miles live in Hawaii 1972.....Them Changes. What an amazing talent he was.

One of my favorite performances is him and Billy Preston on The Midnight Special doing a gospel song. Wow it was AMAZING. Buddy’s voice is so good And YES we know on the drums he was going to bring the house to pure JOY.

Sanada MeitreiyaAm i seeing who i think i am seeing playing the lead guitar with Buddy Miles on "Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze(6:49) in this video.I am asking because i do not see his name mentioned in the comment section Terence Trent Darby 1986 and other albums? That guy had a taste of the fame, one of the fastest success stories ever. Very proud of the way he got out after seeing it for what was and saved his own life. OK so the public may have rejected his second album neither Fish nor Flesh ,but this ma survived to out live the negative machinations of the music industry unlike many other fallen heroes. Total respect to him for that .This man is total " G" in my opinion. Found his peace and settled with a family in Italy. "Sanada Meitreiya" ,thats his rebirth name.
