    Gordon, I was forced to retire a couple years ago and have since taken up woodturning. I have watched quite a number of your videos and am impressed. I have watched this set of nine twice and some even more. At first your attention to detail nearly drove me to distraction. But as I watched them again, I could clearly see that this is something you dearly love doing. And is what has made you an artist as well as your work a work of art anyone would be proud to own. Thanks for your time and effort. May God bless you and yours.

      Thank you so very much. Comments like this are what keeps me trying to do a good job. A little dangerous for trying to keep the ego under control but I appreciate the kind words. I don't wear a hat so I don't have to worry that it will be too small if I get a big head. ;-)
      Thanks for watching & commenting.

    Beautiful vessel Gord. I have always turned bowls from one piece of wood and never thought I would want to try segmenting. I thought it was way to time consuming. But your videos have inspired me to try. And since now there are ideas for segmented sleds it will speed up the process. Once again I thank you for such a detailed set of explanations. I had to watch all nine at once .Wow !

    read all the comments, just cant add any more praise Gordon. I watched all 9 in a row and fully understand the amount of time ,planning, effort, skill, precision and dedication that went into making that piece, and on top of all that, a perfectly clean and tidy workshop.
    Your a credit to yourself and a big thumbs up to an obviously supportive family, thank you for sharing with us your incredible attention to detail and skill.

    Wow you have nerves of steel! My heart was in my mouth in case you got a catch as you finished turning it. Congratulations beautiful job and every detail covered completely. I will try something like this some day. Thanks Gord.

      Thank you very much, Kevin. I definitely don't have nerves of steel. I am, however, possibly the slowest and most careful turner on the planet when doing something like this. After all the hours involved in a piece like this a catch would probably result in tears and a few bad words like heck and darnit being spoken. So far, so good!!
      Thanks for watching, Kevin.

    Great series of videos, it has inspired me to make 3 segmented vases to date. the only area I have trouble is with clamping the layers together (one layer at a time) as sometime I get a little bit of slippage. I like your press and wondered if you are planning a video on making the press.

    Hey Gordon, just got done with all 9 videos. Very helpful and informative. The way you explain things (math etc) was easy to grasp. Really a lovely hollow form. A question and an comment. Why worry about finishing the inside, no one can really see in there. And in segment 8 when you was parting off the top rings and they went bouncing around, use the dowel rod set up to keep them from going everywhere. Thanks for sharing your videos. My father and I will probably try some segmented work when they come down next week. Take care, David

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Clauson Hi David. Glad you enjoyed the videos. As to why I bother finishing the inside; I just can't leave anything incomplete!! If I didn't finish the inside I would feel that I had done less than the best I am capable of and it would bug me a great deal. I know that most people think it's overkill but that's just the way I'm wired. ;)Thanks for watching,.....Gord

    Very inspiring Gord. This is by far the best and most detailed series of videos I have been able to find. The information you offered has got me started. One thing: Do you have plans for the disk sander jig? I have a press, but I like yours. Where did you get the hardware? One last thing; Where did you get the Zyliss vice?
    Once again, great work. Thanks

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yuval Yeoman Hi Yuval. Thanks for the kind words; I'm really glad you enjoyed the video series. I have another video in 2 parts showing how to build the sanding jig. You should be able to easily find it on my channel. If not search for: Sanding Jig For Segmented Woodturning and you should find it.
      For the gluing press, I got my hardware from Lee Valley Tools.
      The Zyliss vise I bought years ago at a woodworking show. I love it and use it a lot but it's no longer made. If you do a Google search for it you should see a link to Advanced Machinery who now offer one called the Z-Vise. It's a copy of the original Zyliss vise. I just did a search and their website says they have only got one left in stock. It even comes in a molded carrying case which is a step up from the one I have.
      Thanks again for watching & commenting, Yuval.
      Have a great day,

    Thanks Gord for a wonderfully educating and humbling series. Just curious on the accent rings sandwiching the diamond ring. You parted off the inside ring on the first one you showed. Could you have parted all 4 walnut rings off one ring and the 2 birch off another or did you make up separate rings for each? Would love to see your entire gallery. And you can always build more shelves.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      0716Michael The number I can part off of a single ring depends on the thickness of the ring I'm parting from and the thickness of the rings I'm parting off. I always try to get as many as I can from a single ring. Someday maybe I will put up a slideshow of some of my pieces but I'm not much of a photographer and photos NEVER do justice to anything, IMHO. I'll have to talk to SWMBO about more shelves. Don't think it's going to work; she's the decorator and isn't likely to go for it. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate the support. .....Gord

    At the end of the last video I was wondering how you were going to pull off reverse chucking this vessel.
    I might have missed it in the video, how thick is the finished wall?
    Good job, looking forward to seeing more of your work.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      traog The vessel wall is about 5/16". Trying for a thinner wall than that makes me very nervous! Any slight failure in the glue application could be disastrous and after all the work that goes into these I don't see the point in taking any chances. IMHO thin walls are for Hollow Forms, lamp shades and things of that nature.

      Sorry Greg! I never thought about showing the vessel longer or with different backgrounds/lighting. I have no idea how many hours I put into my segmented work. If I stopped to figure it out it might make me cry! LOL! I've never sold my work so have no idea what it might go for. My wife keeps telling me to put them in a gallery as we are running out of horizontal surfaces!! Maybe one of these days I'll try it.

    Just watched all nine parts, Gord. Great videos. Thanks for making them. I see that you did these in 2014. Since the Wedgi Sled & Wedgies have made cutting the segments so much easier, would you use them if you made another one?

    I loved your vessel but I think you made it harder than necessary. You turned the inside first and then matched the outside to the inside (I admire the skill but I think it is unnecessary). I would have done it in two pieces. Glue all the pieces below the feature ring together in the same way you did (or by using the tailstock instead of the glue press). Mount the top ring to another glue block and faceplate and starting from there go down thru the feature ring. Mount the top to the tailstock with a live center and press the two together (no glue). You can now turn the entire outside to shape at one time and can see the whole thing. Then separate and do the inside of the top and bottom separately (they are now just bowls and you can easily match the shape to the outside and get the walls as thin as you like with no hollowing problems. Sand and finish the inside and then glue the final joint. Hold by the top faceplate and a steadyrest (just to be extra careful) and turn the bottom faceplate off. Use that lip on the inside of the bottom as an inside tenon and reverse to turn off the top faceplate (again using the steadyrest). This gives plenty of support to finish turn the top. Finish the outside and you are done...no need for the donut.
    Also I would finish the bottom of the floating base "before" I put it in place to prevent the finish from wicking into the joint and sealing it (voiding the floating action).

      Cameron Johnson Hi Cameron. I've actually turned a couple of vessels the way you recommend and for some reason, maybe I'm just nuts, I prefer doing it the way I showed in the videos. I didn't have great luck lining things up when I did it in 2 (3?) pieces. I was just starting out so maybe I'd have better luck now with a bit more experience. Might have to try it again someday. Thanks for the input. I hadn't thought of finishing the floating base before gluing it in place and it makes perfect sense to do that. Thank you so much for pointing that out. I'll keep it in mind in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting, Cameron. I appreciate the support. .....Gord

      Just in case you didn't fully understand the process. I noticed the Oneway live center you were using. Oneway sells an adapter that matches your headstock threads so you can mount a faceplate on the tailstock. Since it is a live center you can hold the top and bottom pieces of your vessel together without glue while you turn the outside...then separate the two pieces to do the inside.

    Wouldn't a wedgie sled be easier?

      Hi Rob,
      Yes, it certainly is easier and that's what I use now. However, when I made the video 3 or 4 years ago I had not heard of it. A little too much work to make the videos again to change that. Thanks for watching, Rob.
      Take care,
