My biggest guilty pleasure, the movie that not only introduced me to Dr Seuss's genious, but sparked my interest in animation and taught me to form own opinions to certain movies. Lorax literally introduced me to the wonderful and enchanting world of cinematography and animation. Without becoming curious about this film's making-of I wouldn't have got interested in animated movies overall. Way back in 2014-2015. I see this films bad points but appreciate it for its strongest ones and beautiful animation. I admit I like this movie more for what I personally see of it and not for what it is in fact, but I still greatly enjoy it. Gotta love the charismatic Once-ler and "HBCIB" of course.
The Onceler shouldn't have been shown. He was never shown in the original book to show that anybody could become him. Him being shown makes it nearly impossible to look at it the way Seuss wanted it.
Now that I look back on it, why even have Ted in the movie? He only does what he does, because of Audrey, who definitely needed more screen time. If they had just had her be the star, give her more screen time, and made her into a kind of rebellious teenager character, the movie would have been 100% the same.
5:36 I'd say my issue with Ted is his motivation. The original Seuss story was a non-descript boy wandering outside of town, and becoming curious about "The Street of the Lifted Lorax." Here, all that childlike curiosity is supplanted by the filmmakers going: "Ok, we need a hook to make the audience like this kid. What is the most obviously cliche thing we can do?" "Give him a love interest?" "BRILLIANT!!" Even by the end of the film, I still didn't feel that Ted had truly come to care about the trees. And of course, there's the huge plothole of just why this town knows nothing of real trees, or how Grammy is the only one who knows about the Once-ler (or how she knows that talking to him will 'get Ted a tree.' If it was that easy, wouldn't Audrey have figured that out?).
Yeah, that one was honestly the best song out of all of them. (Though, that's probably partly because the other songs are just cheesy and forgettable...)

To be honest, the ONLY thing I liked about this movie was the song 'How Bad Can I Be?'. Oh, and, Ted and Audrey's 'relationship' are just diet Dipper and Wendy. It's even a brunette boy that likes a redhead girl!
If there's one character I really, really hate in this, it's Onceler's family. They really talk him down from the start, and only come around and support him when his business takes off, then they pressure him into cutting down trees. While much of the blame can go to Onceler, they voice their disappointment in him when all the trees are destroyed, but fail to take into account that it's their fault too!
While I do agree with Animat about the original story being well-explained, I cannot agree with him on the made-up plot. I actually found more good in this movie than bad. For example, I actually like Ted as a main character. He is very devoted to his girl, which I admire much. If he had gotten an actual child's voice instead of Zac Efron, I would have called him cute as well (I am one person who likes boys smaller than girls). And I for one, was never annoyed by any of the songs (except for How Bad Can I Be). The original animation project from 1972 already had songs anyway, so it actually makes sense for this movie to have songs; musical or no musical. I suppose The Lorax will have to be called a guilty pleasure; some people can like this movie, but not everyone.
This was the Second Dr Seuss film not just animated not just Illumination's second film animated because of you know what HOP DID! But it is Mixed meaning that is Half Good! Half Bad!

Sometimes epic stories can begin with mere tender feelings. Look at "The Hunger Games." Peeta's love for Katniss caused the downfall of the oppressive regime.
Y'know if Animat is gonna use the Songs segments of The Lorax Review as Memories in the upcoming Super Mario Bros Movie Review, he's gonna have the Lorax songs Flashbacks back in 2012 when he realized that the New Mario Movie is also a musical, also he's gonna saying Oh My God just in his Jetsons: The Movie review, that's just an idea but we'll see.
