The movie felt more like a bunch of episodes from an unfinished Despicable Me Tv Series all mixed together in one movie, which makes it feel a bit crowded at times. Gotta admit though that it wasn't as bad as I though it was gonna be. In fact, I will even say that it's the most I've enjoyed from Illumination since the 1st Despicable Me. I guess that the way to describe this is that it's simple, but effective. Not as heartfelt or depth as the 1st movie, but pretty cute none the less. Though I feel you give too much credit to the sequels and spin-off.

Despicable Me 3, it was the best Illumination movie I've seen and the best of 2017. It's about time Illumination started doing an animated series of Despicable Me for Nickelodeon someday, because I'm anxious to see it.
I really like the first two films, but this is the most disapointing animated film from the year and one of the most from the year, I just think is ok but I think If the year ends now the only animated movies from this year that I will watch in the future will be lego batman and captain underpants

Based off of the trailer, I have 2 predictions for the Emoji Movie review: 1. The story is going to be criticized for being a rip-off of Inside Out. 2. It's going to get the seal of garbage.
I think you officially have some kind of bias to only not see the bigger problems here but even give it a flat out 8 in spite of giving a 6 to the story. The foundation is a really strong one, showing at some point they wanted to focus on a strong story about Gru possibly becoming evil again, along with Dru's backstory. But instead they completely ditch it, barely focusing on the depth this story has, and instead having a really cxliche story of two brothers, even having that "3rd act split up" cliche i hate so much. The characters at least feel like themselves but are not as interesting as before, and Dru just...exists, not a lot to him and he's kind of annoying. That spark that was there before is gone by the time the 3rd of this movie happens. There's barely any heartwarming moments that register and all the problems also don't lead to that many laughs. It's pretty clear this franchise is a cash grab now as they can't even use their few good ideas right. Par for the course for Illumination, i guess.
That's not entirely true. Probably cause people are used to praise Pixar for their animation continuously improving. But man the animators at Pixar put their souls into their work and therefore they deserve their praise. Illumination loves to throw things around like dolls, which I still find somewhat hilarious.
Alberto Productions This movie used the exact same character model 3 times in 3 different scenes. Yeah....creative... It's not nearly as bad as the Alpha and Omega movies where character models are reused frequently (and then are featured prominently in the foreground), but it's still disappointing to see a major animation studio do. I think Animatt mentioned that as a problem in Cars 2, but at least with inanimate objects, giving them a different color at the very least isn't something you can notice with an untrained eye. This movie however did not even try to hide the fact that's what it did!
I agree with your 8/10, I think the film had a bit too many subplots to manage on the story side of things but the animation was great and it had a lot of memorable moments

I would rate Despicable Me 3 a 6.5/10 I thought the movie was really funny and I absolutely loved the character of Brat especially with all the 80's music playing but the writing IMO was weak. Most things that happened in the movie could've been put into a despicable me show or illumination shorts like anything that happened with minions and the hunting for unicorns. The movie was enjoyable tho
I honestly don't think Illumination is one of the top animation studios, Especially compared to Disney, Pixar, and even DreamWorks. The only good movies they have are Despicable Me 1&2. The rest are very mediocre.
I found a major plothole, being that in one scene, they leave a plot important car in a different area, but have it in the climax, creating an issue where they shouldn't be able to do what they do in the final act.
I'm calling it! The Emoji Movie will crash and burn and will say that this movie is ten times worst than Norm of the North or even the new Norm of the North movie!

who else thought the plot would be that everyone would love dru but gru, and then eventually by snooping around gru would figure out how bad dru actually is and so would the others.
Just watched the third film on Blu-ray after catching up with the 2nd film. And while I liked Trey Parker and some of the heartwarming moments the story’s side plots made the film rather forgettable. Not a terrible film and it does have some moments including Gru’s relationship with his brother, the story still underwhelmed me. The first two films had their share of dumb moments but at the very least they had a nice balance of comedy and drama.
Honestly this was the weakest of the DM trilogy. Not bad, but just mostly okay. I found Balthazar Bratt to be a pretty weak villain too. I'd give it a 6/10.

Kureisan28 There are ways they could sneak those references, like if at one point of the movie the villain talked with an Eric Cartman voice, or he has 4 robotic minions each named after one of the main characters of South Park and the first one to be destroyed is the robot named Kenny, or if the villain disguised as a cop and began beating up other cops while yelling "RESPECT MY ATHORITAH!!!", and that's just a few ways they could incorporate those references. Not to mention family films can have dirty jokes that go right over kids heads.
Wow you really enjoy this movie! I thought you were going to give it the Seal of Approval but that's ok. At least it is way 100% better, funnier and watchable than the Emoji Movie.

The amazing thing that i have found about Illumination is that most of their films gross astronomically higher than their budget. For example, it takes around 70-80 million dollars just to make one film, in return, they get 300M-1B+ dollars! That shows that they are successful with smaller budgets, most Disney films need 150M+ budget to get more than 500M.
And next is the Emoji Movie. I think I might actually go and see that movie just so I can see how truly awful Sony can get with this one. (In the trailer I saw when I went to see Despicable Me 3, there was a "Bye Felicia" joke that even made me shake my head and say, "Oh come on, dude.")

Very solid review. Though might just wait for this to come on Netflix (since that's where Illumination's films are starting to show up on), since I decided to wait for Spider-Man: Homecoming rather. I will say the Despicable Me series is without a doubt the most legitimately good franchise from Illumination; every other film hasn't been as great, but passable IMO. But either way, next review will be the Emoji Movie. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh crap!
To me, it was okay, but it felt like a slight rehash of the second film, but with a few interesting parts. It wasn't as bad as Cars 3 (which was boring [except for the cute short at the beginning] and only had one good part: Cruz Ramirez) or The Boss Baby (which was my worst movie of the year since it ripped off the superior Storks), but I'd watch it over those two films. Also, there were only 5 other people in the theater when I saw Despicable Me 3, possibly since it was the day before the Fourth of July.

I just thought it was unnecessary. The second movie had a fine ending and left no reason to make another sequel. With the poor quality of the story and the absence of character development, it is fairly obvious that this movie was 100% money driven.

I honestly don't think Illumination is one of the top animation studios, Especially compared to Disney, Pixar, and even DreamWorks. The only good movies they have are Despicable Me 1&2. The rest are very mediocre.

I found a major plothole, being that in one scene, they leave a plot important car in a different area, but have it in the climax, creating an issue where they shouldn't be able to do what they do in the final act.

Jay W. what do you mean? I actually saw it, I was talking about the film getting a good review.
Just watched the third film on Blu-ray after catching up with the 2nd film. And while I liked Trey Parker and some of the heartwarming moments the story’s side plots made the film rather forgettable. Not a terrible film and it does have some moments including Gru’s relationship with his brother, the story still underwhelmed me. The first two films had their share of dumb moments but at the very least they had a nice balance of comedy and drama.
Honestly this was the weakest of the DM trilogy. Not bad, but just mostly okay. I found Balthazar Bratt to be a pretty weak villain too.
I'd give it a 6/10.

What pisses me off is they got Trey Parker but his character didn't make any South Park references.
Kureisan28 There are ways they could sneak those references, like if at one point of the movie the villain talked with an Eric Cartman voice, or he has 4 robotic minions each named after one of the main characters of South Park and the first one to be destroyed is the robot named Kenny, or if the villain disguised as a cop and began beating up other cops while yelling "RESPECT MY ATHORITAH!!!", and that's just a few ways they could incorporate those references. Not to mention family films can have dirty jokes that go right over kids heads.

RocketPower Productions for me i don't count monster trucks on my rankings since the movie is mostly live action. the only technical animated thing is the Monster that hides inside the truck but even at that the Monster isn't really animated he was made using cgi effects

The amazing thing that i have found about Illumination is that most of their films gross astronomically higher than their budget. For example, it takes around 70-80 million dollars just to make one film, in return, they get 300M-1B+ dollars! That shows that they are successful with smaller budgets, most Disney films need 150M+ budget to get more than 500M.

And next is the Emoji Movie. I think I might actually go and see that movie just so I can see how truly awful Sony can get with this one. (In the trailer I saw when I went to see Despicable Me 3, there was a "Bye Felicia" joke that even made me shake my head and say, "Oh come on, dude.")

Dean Falcon despicle me 3 is commercial as fuck
Very solid review. Though might just wait for this to come on Netflix (since that's where Illumination's films are starting to show up on), since I decided to wait for Spider-Man: Homecoming rather. I will say the Despicable Me series is without a doubt the most legitimately good franchise from Illumination; every other film hasn't been as great, but passable IMO.
But either way, next review will be the Emoji Movie. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh crap!
I never laughed throughout the whole movie
To me, it was okay, but it felt like a slight rehash of the second film, but with a few interesting parts. It wasn't as bad as Cars 3 (which was boring [except for the cute short at the beginning] and only had one good part: Cruz Ramirez) or The Boss Baby (which was my worst movie of the year since it ripped off the superior Storks), but I'd watch it over those two films. Also, there were only 5 other people in the theater when I saw Despicable Me 3, possibly since it was the day before the Fourth of July.
FreshliciousFlower Cars 3 wasn't boring though. The racing scenes were fun and entertaining and the animation can look quite colorful. Though, it mostly goes for a grimmer tone.

They wanted to see Jackson Storms ass getting beaten and McQueen winning, but the "message " is to give up and become grandpa except worse. Not only are cars fans like me dissapointed, but its telling kids to give up. The ending was a dissapoitment more than cars 2. And you are snobby and disgusting. Coco is better. Even other films of 2017's are better.
The movie was pretty good
I just thought it was unnecessary. The second movie had a fine ending and left no reason to make another sequel. With the poor quality of the story and the absence of character development, it is fairly obvious that this movie was 100% money driven.
I still can't believe the first film got a higher score than HTTYD, for having an "old story done differently," much like HTTYD did. There seems to be a bias with this company.
