      Billie said in her autobiography "Lady Sings the Blues" that she shot 30 takes of the sequence where she's knocked to the ground by her faithless boyfriend, and since she was totally untrained in how to take a fall on screen, she was sore for weeks.

      Billie said in her autobiography, "Lady Sings the Blues," that she had to shoot about 20 takes of that scene and she was sire fir weeks afterwards because nobody ever told her how to fake a fall onscreen without hurting herself.

    Thank you so much for posting this! Referencing the Georgetown University's Library page entitled "Duke Ellington on stage and screen", this short film released in 1935 was demanded and created by Ellington after the mistreatment and misrepresentation of him and his and Black American art by Paramount Studios in the 1934 film 'Murder at The Vanities' in the scene initially titled "Ebony Rhapsody". (Later, in a clearly racist and disrespectful move, it was renamed "The Rape of The Rhapsody".)
    Ellington had the wherewithal and clout to stand up for his image and respect, with the result being in amends, this beautiful film.

    • @mgconlan
      @mgconlan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As early as 1928 Duke Ellington had already established himself as a "race man," a Black celebrity who felt an obligation to use whatever influence and power he had to fight for coivil rights and racial justice and equality. And a year before "Murder at the Vanities" he starred in a Paramount short called "A Bundle of Blues." Just after "Murder at the Vanities" he got to appear on-screen with Mae West in her film "Belle of the Nineties," and West was at the height of her star power. The "suits" at Paramount were O.K. with featuring Duke's band on the soundtrack but they wanted to put white musicians on the screen. No way, said Mae West: she demanded and got the right to have Ellington's musicians appear on screen with her.

      @ahnraemenkhera7451 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @AlvesterGarnett @mgconlan Thank you both for these thoughtful info notes as to how the video clip got produced and the efforts required in the 1930s, for gawd’s sake, JUST to make a musical short reel featuring Black people!!
      The fact that neither the controversy in producing Nonwhite visual arts, nor the general pattern of reception for the productions have changed at all indicates strongly that The System of R/WS not only irrefutably exists, but here’s visual testament to its awesome powers of supremacy & domination over all involved.
      While I realize Ms. West’s own contributions to Paramount certainly SHOULD have afforded her lifetime executive status, it cannot be lost on a general public that in 2020-23, Mae West WOULD own a studio. Duke Ellington would probably, in all likelihood, not-unless it was in Mississippi or Georgia (concepts) WHICH ironically offer greater opportunities to Nonwhite people classified Black today than “Hollywood” appears to be offering, since the 1970s!.
      Perhaps the “Mae Wests” of today are the best placed, best-positioned, certainly the most-affluent women, in actual fact, to produce Justice worldwide. Perhaps it will turn out to be women who classify themselves White who invent Justice & launch it into practice vs. Systemic Injustice, launched since 1492. In all the other Areas of Activity besides merely in Entertainment as well!! But looking back to 1935, one cannot help but wonder what specifically stopped them-completely-from doing so-then??

    Thanks for restoring the original Paramount logo at the beginning and end instead of the horribly ugly "U. M. & M. TV" logo that got stuck on this film in the 1950's. A great film in its own right and also a pencil sketch for Ellington's later symphonic masterpiece, "Black, Brown and Beige." The soundtrack was recorded in October 1934 and featured Billie Holiday in her first truly great vocal performance (those two nervous vocals with a Benny Goodman studio band in November and December 1933 notwithstanding). Somewhere she matured during that year from an O.K. "hotcha" jazz singer into a goddess. Incidentally Ellington drew on previous compositions for this suite (the "Dance" is "Ducky Wucky" and the final "Harlem Rhythm" sequence is "Merry-Go-Round"), the dancer at the end is Earl "Snake Hips" Tucker, and director Fred Waller later quit Paramount in 1938 to invent Cinerama.
