DIY Gunshot Treatment on Chicago’s South Side

  • It's no secret that Chicago has become the center of America’s gun violence epidemic over the last few years. In 2017 alone, the city had 3,457 shooting victims- - 246 of which were children. To make matters worse, Chicago’s South Side - where many of these shootings take place- doesn’t even have a trauma center with the ability to treat adult shooting victims.
To help combat these shortfalls, a grassroots community organization known as Ujimaa Medics has stepped in. Ujimaa Medics trains local kids as young as 12 on how to treat gunshot wounds and how to manage crowds at the scene of a shooting.
VICE's Rodney Lucas traveled to Chicago to meet one of the organization's co-founders and see their training firsthand.

As a firefighter, EMT, and 911 operator, this is absolutely necessary for people to learn. Bleeding control saves lives. Keep it up.

Teaching 12 year olds how to treat gunshot wounds is heartbraking.

I’m thankful for these people teaching their communities how to deal with these terrible situations.

I'm not against the expression "passed away" but when someone dies because they were refused by one hospital and had to go to another, that's not passed away. That's thrown away.

What inspirational people. Not blinded by ideologies or hatred but motivated through empathy and compassion. These people take time out of their lives so they can train to save people's lives. No greed, no hatred, no disrespect. Admirable to say the least!

Its ridiculous that police arent trained in first aid, what happens when a cops partner gets shot, they just stand there???

this brought me to tears I live in north Carolina and my moms a ems worker some nights she will come home with a bit of a distant look in her eyes and youd know not to ask her about work one night I made the mistake of asking she started crying but she said what happend turns out that night she had to pick up brain matter and she had made eye contact with a man in his last moments after he had put his mouth around the barrel of a 12 gauge and pulled the trigger but she is the most loveing mom you'll ever meet and she taught me how to do the things those kids are being taught she taught me from how to treat a cut from a rusty nail to a blown off or decapitated limb and I have practiced I want to join disaster response teams or search and rescue I have practiced how t to get through and clear rubble in the event of a disaster or accident like a bad car crash I am 12 yrs old I have practised until I could get into a mangled car or break a reinforced door in the event of an event like a earthquake or tornado 😭

Ay man this is one of those videos that really puts things into perspective. No matter what daily problems you have in life be thankful that they're not as crazy as this.

The fact you would have to make helping someone who is dying from a gunshot wound mandatory before cops take it upon themselves to help says a lot.

I think the most heartbreaking part of this was when that woman matter-of-factly told a room full of kids “don’t talk and move at the same time [to police]. It may trigger aggression.” This is how you deal with bears or rabid dogs. Police are behaving like animals toward these kids, so consistently that dealing with it is built into the curriculum.

Although it is so sad that it has come to this for the black, minority and other youth groups of Chicago and many other cities around the US., I congratulate you for doing this. I am a white, middle class woman from Canada that studied in Health Sciences and Paramedic studies but I feel for your plight. No one should have to face such violence. It is HORRID that you even have to do this and that police officers don't even have to offer basic first aid care in a shooting (if this is in fact true). Education is key! Educate yourselves and I applaud you for raising awareness and learning the basics of first aid. It really horrifies me that you all have to even do this and face this on a daily basis but I guess it's a fact/reality of life. It shouldn't be.

Im in london ontario. Worlds away from the reality these kids are living and it honestly baffles me that they are so easily overlooked and discarded. A few small changes and minimal amount of funding could have an immense impact on the quality of life for these kids and young adults. Why it hasn't been done is a mystery and a crime of the highest order. These are brilliant capable kids who could be amazing but instead they're being neglected. It's pure insanity.

That is a really good way to ask questions, I found when I was in highschool people had a hard time speaking up and the 'raise your hand' prompt never really worked, this is communicative for only a moment, less stressful. Very smart lady, good video, numbers of shootings in Chicago are insane.

If departments and officers weren’t so worried about getting sued there’d be more incentive to include first aid in police protocol. Unfortunately we live in a society where giving CPR can be a huge financial risk, so much so it’s hard to blame someone for waiting on paramedics. You can barely sneeze around a dying person and not get sued by some scumbag attorney.

Funny how many TH-cam commenters 5,000 miles away with no civic background and no problems seem to know exactly how to fix this crisis. Too bad a city isn’t run by a TH-cam comments section, it would definitely be a utopia right guys?

I am so touched by these people's stories... and I am so sorry there are people who have to live in such fear... In my small country (Croatia), even in the capital, we still feel quite safe and I can even walk home at all times in the night with no worries. I wish you all - all the best and I hope finally one day we can all live in peace, safety and comfort.
