learn a progression like that up the neck with CAGED chords in every position. Then do it around the circle of fifths. Learn voicings on the high and low strings. I did it for a couple months with vi-IV-I-V and now I can just find any chord I want somewhere close to where my hand is, helped my playing so much.
@@Rīñrnp I don't, I'm just decent at theory and could figure it out. Lots of info out there though. My best advice is to not try to play too many strings, it's OK to mute a couple.
Marco, because of your 5 Steps, I have finally seen the light to licks & chords, and soloing. Believe me, you make it look so easy; so motivational. Thanks for unlocking the mystery; for the inspiration!
As a teacher myself I can say that you are a great engaging teacher, I learnt a lot from this as it is highly adaptive. One thing I found while playing with the connecting riffs was by making the last note of the riff the root note of the next chord meant I finished the riff on the chord which added flow to the rhythm. Many thanks.
The base pattern chosen for the top 3 strings was an interesting choice - got me thinking more about musical modes and how we don't actually need to resolve our licks to the actual key itself. In the case of this video, while the notes themselves match the key of D Major, the scale pattern starts and stops on the 5th degree of said scale, so we're actually hearing an A Mixolydian scale played over the top of a D Major chord progression - very cool stuff. Makes me want to explore the nearby pattern of playing the G Lydian scale over the top of the same chord progression :).
I have been looking everywhere for how guitarists play chords and licks together. Finally landed here and this is just amazing. I have been following your videos for a while Marco , thank you so much for sharing ur knowledge🙏
Being a very low level intermediate guitar player, I had tried and quickly given up on finger style, it simply mystified me. I've watched 20 of your videos, you have lifted the covers up and now I see how it's done.
A very good example of what you are trying to get across is "Canon in D" which plays basically a D major scale throughout all of the changes (including your progression's chords) but adding an F#m of course only changing the beginning or root note . Nicely done without sounding condescending to the newer players.
Dude this is exactly the kind of videos ive been searching for on youtube, yes fingerstyles are great but THESE^ type of lessons really help me to grow the understanding of guitar. Thanks Marco! You’re great
Totally agree. I've been messing around for years. I want to get more serious. And I felt completely stuck. I need a vid that are beyond basic but also going back to basics if that makes sense
Not gonna lie I have been stuck with playing the same scales noodling not knowing what to do thinking I had to play all of these fast licks. I have been so discouraged as I thought I wasn’t progressing. But watching this video finding out I could use the same scale seven notes over all four chords made something click for me. I no longer have to run through every scale I know with every chord change. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
After spending hours drilling on the 5 major pentatonic scale positions, their major scales, and then the 7 modes and wondering “wtf am I supposed to do with this crap?” Someone finally puts it into perspective and helps fill in the gaps. I can see we’re playing a D major scale within the F# Phrygian shape. I can see we are in the 3rd position major pentatonic pattern. All of this knowledge is worthless if I just start playing random notes super fast, but not understanding the phrasing and rhythm. I struggled with this gap for so long and finally, someone lays out a 5 step approach in a 16 minute video, lol. I’ve spent 2 hours going through the material in this video and am only on step 3. I know from all my hours and hours of drills what scales/mode shapes I could play, but I don’t know what notes I should play. Thanks for helping me figure this out!!!
For some reason I understand what this channel says along with you were born to sing.. after a year playing tonight I learned just how much you can do with 1 chord
Today must be my lucky day. I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of guitar videos, some OK and most of them not good at all (for me). This one really is the kind of stuff I've been looking for. Thank you very much!
Sometimes the same thing can be explained a thousand times and only the time you didn't expect that it finally starts making sense! I always wondered how to connect chords and individual notes, how it looks so seamless and effortless on others. Watched loads of videos on individual mechanical cogs that make it happen, but never found the right voice that connected the dots. Perhaps that is a testament to the growth of my ability too that has helped with the understanding, but there's no doubt about it - you are a great teacher!
This was really a light bulb moment video.. I’m going to work on this. My playing is boom chuck ie alt base chuck. This really explains a lot I never”got”. I was clueless when my turn to solo. Now I have a a clear idea of the mechanics. The next hurdle will be trying to sort out the timing. Lots of eight and sixteenth notes to figure out.
What a lovely lesson!! It amazes me, just how smart, how accomplished people are and how little I really know, thank you, so much for opening my eyes!!! Great lesson!!!
Mr marco cirillo I just want to say thank you so much for all of your teaching video, it really improve my skill in a very short period of time. And your truly have such a warm and kind personality ( love it when u smile btw :) I wish u and family nothing but health and happiness sir. Warm regards from indonesia.
Thank you for sharing your God given talent esp to interested seniors who wish to make their guitar playing a little bit, melodious or enjoyable than the usual guitar playing, but find it hard to follow, but you made it possible to follow.i am from the phil,i hope to be your patron with $5 monthly.with too many good ways to follow, just focusing with your way of teaching i believe i can already do guitar playing enjoyable to make my day,Sir.
Complimenti, Marco. Suono il fingerstyle da molti anni, ti scopro solo ora e subito mi sono appassionato ai tuoi video. Hai uno stile di lezione davvero interessante e soprattutto pratico. Al centro c’è la semplicità. Dono di pochi eletti. Bravo davvero
I've been playing guitar since I was 6 years old trying to develop my own technique finger-picking Jarvis picking all the kind of techniques that you can think but I've never had a teacher like you I'm glad you on social media trying to teach people I love your Technique keep up the good work looking forward to seeing you more
Thank you sir for the lesson! Everyday i am learning new things! Been playing guitar since my teen years, learnt to read tabulatures then stop from there! Now you woken up my sleeping desire to learn again! More power!
Watch several times and read all the replies. The licks are really nice. The notes you chose seems random but actually follow the scale, pentatonic, chord progression rules. This clips gives the beginners some hints.but after learn these it will be ok.
Marco, so glad I was willing to st through the whole thing. I get it! Finally! The first 2 step I’m thinking, he may have something here. Steps 3 and 4, ok you got me. Step 5, Eureka, struck gold. Thank you thank you! I just subscribed.
Than you Marco, I am following you lessons for two weeks and I am improving very quikly you are great!!!! Easy, clear, very generous and very very helpfull!!
Ah more like this please @marco! There's thousands of videos explaining chords and scales but very few which explain the links and how to improvise successfully. This was a real lightbulb moment for me and I thank you for your excellent (and free!) tuition :) P.S. if you could perhaps do this type of video with different styles of music that would be great - folk, classical, emotional etc. Thanks again!
I think it is about the harmonic order of balance between chords and tune. Notes create melody chords create rhythm so there has to be a balance between melody and rhythm.
Great lesson. Great to focus on rhythm. Explained in a simple and logical way where everything is built on. Your a great teacher Marco, you've been doing some great lessons lately.
Thanks for sharing... only just watched video & as a 'beginner' to finger picking, this video helps me understand the chord progressions...I generally play folk music using Travis picking style & want to be able to move between chords in time.... cheers 😀
Marco, che piacere seguirti ! Improvvisamente, tutto diventa chiaro , limpido, come un lago di montagna. Per la prima volta improvviso con piacere. Grazie !
This is such a great tutorial to doing fills. This wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but your steps are really well structured and I might end up practicing this just to get better at improv! I’m also interested to learn to do fills with other chords even, jazz it up a bit.. any help on that? Or even some other video anyone knows?
Thanks, for the lesson on emphasizing persistent phrasing in improvisation. That really helps me with my improvisation. Maybe if you can do a lesson on phrasing, like what are some of the good note rhythms one should practice daily, would be appreciated.
Thank you so much for this instructional free video. Having chord progression along with scales, music and tablature and progressing from simple to more involved steps is wonderfully helpful. Thank you for giving of your time.
Excellent lesson on many levels! Very well explained, step by step. Super clear, also thanks to the staff notation on screen. Great stuff to try during the Christmas break. Thanks a lot and happy holidays!
Love the lesson Marco. It is presented in a clear and concise manner and your approach makes a lot of sense. Thank you for taking the time to share. I will become a new subscriber and hopefully take my playing to a higher level.
Great lesson thank you! At first I thought we needed to follow the intervalic scale degree within the scale of each chord change, for example playing the 2nd degree to the 5th as the phrase for each chord, and I was struggling. This is a far better initial step 😅
I was looking for this type of lesson from many days..but finally found which I really wants to learn. Best lesson on TH-cam playing fills between chords..thank you so much sir. .
Wow...I just wonder how many guitar teachers understand where the amateur students find it tough to jump the wall and explore the music world...thanx for a great lesson.
Very helpful brother! I have been watching for so long over the internet to know how to add fills between chords. This one is my favorite Thank you SO MUCH
You got very good teaching skills with lots of patience. And you tought this so well and rhythm is so simple and touching that i was able to practice it in my mind.

i was just thinking about doing that. Sounds like a good plan to me. Do you perchance still have the material you learned it with?
@@Rīñrnp I don't, I'm just decent at theory and could figure it out. Lots of info out there though. My best advice is to not try to play too many strings, it's OK to mute a couple.

My whole life struggle to play fingerstyle guitar beautifully explained and resolved in 16:21 minutes, Hats off Sir!

Learn CAGED
Become master
You are a great teacher. Bringing difficult things into simple tasks. Thank you.
This dude is one of the best guitar teachers on TH-cam. EXCELLENT!
This lesson is million times better than learning '5 billion songs on two chords'. Thank you, sir.
Also, I don’t think someone can actually learn 5 billion songs so yeah ... this lesson is better 😁😁😁
😅😅😅
Musicality is better than stiff rote memorisation of cowboy chords played with no soul 😎🤙
Superb, simple and very elegant. You are not only a good guitarist but a very elegant teacher. Bless you buddy
Fantastic video. I've wanted to learn this for over 10 years.

This finally made sense for me, thank you for putting your tabs up in the video the way you do.
I thought you had my name!
Add my voice to the hundreds who found this video REALLY helpful!
I love your teaching style. I'm digging the way you show how to practically apply music theory to the guitar.

Thank you, Marco. That was a great lesson in playing and creating melody within a scale and chords. ❤
What I find useful sometimes is to strum a chord then pluck little phrases of that same chord before progressing to the next one.
Great idea! Thanks a lot for sharing it! This makes this approach even more accessible to me.

One of the most useful lessons on TH-cam
This is exactly my way of playing. To alternate plain chords + licks between them + riff and then come back to the plain chords.
Best guitar lesson on the whole internet. This step -by - step approach is like all the greatest ideas brilliantly simple.
Probably the best and most effective guitar lesson I have watched.
Great teaching style everything explained logically and clearly....thanks.
Like others are saying, your approach to teaching is excellent
Yo you are the best guitar instructor on you tube man for intermediate guitarist for beginners it's marty Schwartz.

Excellent lesson on many levels!
Very well explained, step by step. Super clear, also thanks to the staff notation on screen. Great stuff to try during the Christmas break. Thanks a lot and happy holidays!
All guitarists should watch this video. Amazing how many guitarists cant follow a simple progression and melody.
Love the lesson Marco. It is presented in a clear and concise manner and your approach makes a lot of sense. Thank you for taking the time to share. I will become a new subscriber and hopefully take my playing to a higher level.
Hi Marco, your teaching method is great.
sei veramente in gamba. Chiaro, i passaggi sono ben strutturati e con il giusto incremento di difficoltà.
