Why NOBODY Lives in these 9 EMPTY States

  • Why so few Americans live in the 9 Emptiest States despite many being among the Most Beautiful!
The reasons why NOBODY Lives in Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, Maine, South Dakota and other regions of the USA with low population densities differ by state. But some are uninhabited due to cold and snowy weather, extreme isolation, lack of water, harsh terrain not suitable for farming or real estate, government lands, and no jobs or industry for large cities to grow!
Not all of these states are out West, and a few even once had MASSIVE cities, such as Butte, Montana, which is now nearly abandoned! So why do these 9 empty states COMBINED have a smaller population than New York City?
➽ Join our OFFICIAL Discord Server!: / discord
And if you're trying to homestead, buy cheap, empty land, or just wanna live in the middle of nowhere... The parts of the country that have the fewest number of people over a large area, with little civilizations and roads, my biggest suggestion is to visit these cities, towns, and states first to decide where you want to move to and live!

I truly hope that those less populated places can stay that way. As a lifetime resident of Florida (well over 40 years) its been incredibly sad and disheartening to see the exponential population growth here, with massive suburban sprawl destroying so much green space. The traffic has become unbearable. Many of the natural places I used to go to escape the city are now being filled with houses, apartments, strip malls and business parks. At what point will it stop? Do we have to pave over everything?

ALOT of the companies and their employees that are fleeing California's over population, Liberal political policies, high crime and sky high taxes are moving to New Mexico because of the availability of cheap land, low cost of living and tax breaks the state are offering companies and people to relocate there. I bought 25 acres right on the Rio Grande river in Los Lunas (35 miles south of Albuquerque) when I was TDY to Kirkland AFB for 6 months in 2008 for next to nothing to build a cabin and start a Homestead when I retired, I'm moving out there at the end of this year and was there last September to drop off the 25' foot camper I'm going to live in while I build my cabin and I was amazed how to how big the Area had grown, in 2008 there wasn't much around the AFB but now it all built up and the Albuquerque metro has grown several miles past the AFB, while I was there I was talking to my neighbor who moved there in 2021 from Los Angeles when his automotive aftermarket company was moved to South Albuquerque and he was telling me how much cheaper it was for both those workers that agreed to move with the company and the company, they literally cut the starting pay in half for all the employees that they new employees and the employees that moved by 25% and they are living high on the hog, he sold his 1 bedroom apartment in L.A. and bought a 5 acre piece of land and even after he built his house and bought a new car to commute to work and a new car for his wife and even then it barely made a dent in the money he sold his apartment for and he's lived off the money from his apartment for the last 3 years and his paychecks just strait into bank and hasn't been touched, he said his wife stopped working when they moved to New Mexico because they no longer needed her paycheck to barely squeeze by. He said moving New Mexico was the best decision he and his wife ever made.

@@Somebody_i_used_2_know the thing about Montana winters is you definitely want to live West of the Continental Divide. I'm 30 miles from Glacier National park and although we get snow we don't get the extreme cold like they do East of the divide. Where is flat, windy and cold!! The coldest I've seen here is -44 without wind chill. But west of the divide isn't so bad. We will get a week or two of below zero temps but it's mild. Just long. Hence why alcoholism is a rather big problem and suicide rates. I hear some small mountain towns in Colorado also have higher sucide rates too. Meth which is everywhere is also a problem. Very minimal crime although that is changing. It used to be we had a murder every 10 yrs or so. That's changing. But to live in Western Montana one needs to be an outdoors person, be able to stand long winters, grizzlies in your yard, mountain lions occasionally, smaller towns and people, and one of the biggest things here for us locals.....be able to help one another in times of need. Ex: if your car broke down on the side of the road for instance. There will be several cars stopping and offering help. We are definitely people who help one another out. If your from California though....don't tell anyone. You will be drawn and quartered 🤣. Oh expect to make way less $$. ....and rent has increased but not crazy like a big city. I pay $550.00 for a 800 sq foot apartment with laundry and parking space. But that's rare. Biggest plus here.....NO WOKE CRAP AND VERY FEW PEOPLE!!!! 😏

It is NOT easy living out here and it really takes a toll on ones mental health. Anchorage is nice and there's lots to do and enjoy. The Military?
I lived in Fairbanks AK for 4 years, when I was a child. Dad was stationed there by the Air Force @ Eilson AFB, but we lived on Ft. Wainwright (army). I started school there- from K-3! Winter was brutal. Started in October , didn't end until late April -early May. 5 hours of daylight- sunrise around 10am, sunset around 2.30-3pm! Lowest temp I recall - 40 below. By contrast, 23 hours of daylight in summer thanks to the midnight sun_ I hated the midnight sun; it would keep me awake... 'sunset' from 3-5am. Of course, you had to survive the mosquito swarms! Temps could get up to 95, but _ no humidity. June was spring, July and August was summer, September was fall; here we go again! I enjoyed our life there, but like I said, I was a kid.

Spot on about North Dakota! As someone who survived my school and high school years there, it was COLD!! They don't even mention the very small country towns there! For example, my whole 6th grade class was 12 students. You learned to put in your car extra blankets, extra food, etc., in case you're stranded on the side of the road by a blizzard. You also learned to either know how to, or bring along someone who knew how to deliver a baby for the same reason. The joke in our small community? "If its 20 ° above zero? Consider it a warm day! If I went back to ND now? My bones could no longer take the cold weather! 😎

I moved from Phoenix, AZ to Las Cruces, NM in 2011. Population was 97K then. The first time I saw the "congested area ahead" sign southbound on I-25, I thought of Phoenix. Those days of going home crawling along at 15 mph on I-10 in 4 lanes of traffic when it's 110°F outside and my A/C is broken. Nope. It was people trying to get to their 8 am class at NMSU. The exit lane of the two-lane highway backed up to get through the light which took about 10 minutes. I laughed so hard, but was grateful I'd made the move. Now I've got the local mindset and will ask myself, "do I really want to drive all the way over there?" when it'll take me 15-20 minutes tops. Lazy bum. 😂

Vermont is no longer less expensive to move to. There has been a massive post-covid land grab by wealthy out of staters looking for their second, or third, or fourth or whatever, who have driven housing prices sky high. Also, winters are long, cold, and spring is wet and cold and muddy (it's also called Mud Season)

Well, it's probably more like BLACKROCK gobbling up land there, as they have been all over the country, since they have to convert their huge digital fortune into tangible assets before the banks go belly up! This is a major contributor to the very real housing shortage and also goes with the 2030 agenda to eradicate homeownership so they can "stack and pack" everyone into the 200 sf coffin apartments that will fill the tiny population zones, as stated per their own spokespeople... So you should definitely enjoy your beautiful rural home now, while you can! That's what I would do. I have heard great things about that area, though never had the opportunity to visit in person.

Idaho basically has relatively few areas to be inhabitable. The area between the northern panhandle and the Boise region is essentially all rugged mountains and forest. I've only driven through once, but it's gorgeous. New Mexico's geography is determined a lot by water, or lack thereof. It's also another state that has rugged wilderness areas (more desert than forest) where no one is ever going to build big cities. But also amazing to visit.

Don't mention that town. Videos like this have advertised us too much this past decade & counting. MT residents used to act that way about 26 yrs. ago. In recent years, Big Biz Cali has combined Gallatin County into a mini CA. My current town now has squatters and transients living under our Yellowstone River bridge just yards from my home. The cops are under trained and lazy. Our governor's okay with permitting gender changes on teen girls & the ranchers are scarce. I love this state. Unfortunately it's turned into a *tourist attraction* in which few leave once here.
I'm part of a community where I reside. It's full of elders as well as families yet even the 7 y.o. kids are noticing the malevolent changes. None are mine, but the children talk to me and tell me exactly how they feel. ~ Covah

Found myself a nice 1883 farm in Powder River County (Montana) with technically 200 acres, flanking Custer National Forest in stunning country 100% opposite of my impression of eastern Montana and so filled with wildlife that I found myself closing windows due to the elk bugles. One other cattle rancher in valley; outstanding people. Just walking out triggers some grand sight or experience. Rent HALF of my last small town house. Super comfortable renovated, original log cabin.
Yep: WTF blizzard last week w/16" some place; 8" here and enough to hunker down and not try getting out, 4WD or not, until after weekend. Except THAT'S when cat gets ill. Nearest vet 53 miles away. Crash in remote no-signal nothing. Small town Merc 15 miles away but no vet; groceries/gas 20% higher if not more due to shipping logistics. So same 106 mile RT once a month to a reasonable grocery. Bears and mountain lions and coyotes (more hazard to cattle/dogs but still). More rattlesnakes than could imagine; must carry a gun constantly (but 22 encounters or so survived through THEIR warnings; only had to dispatch one that refused to leave; near cabin). Freak'n SNAPPING TURTLES come up in the yard from the creek. Jumpscare City ... and this from someone who lived 3 years in Glacier Park.
However: 60s and sun now. Was rescued from crash in 5 minutes by great ranchers that got cat in (whose life was saved and now back home. thx Broadus Vet Clinc), truck back okay. Surrounded by amazing people ... well the few around I should say. I could see wranglers on horseback, deer, pheasant or elk just by walking out. Normal errands are all logistic missions but in the end, every hassle, jumpscare or sigh is worth it. I've "lived" more each day here than weeks in a city.

So you don't go goofy you need a separate building with tunnel access to a music, video and book library for the days you are snowed in.

I ended up trying Joe Farmer with some big gardens (no tractors, etc) and was overwhelmed with produce. Embarrassing. I didn't really think about yields and this creek bottom soil grew acorn squash over 4 pounds. Sold 30%, gave away most that I couldn't blanch/freeze (corn). MUST DO CANNING!
When in Glacier Park I watched the home of a big wheat farmer for a few weeks; wealthy guy and had this super radiant floor heating system. Holy hell, nice! Expensive and control room looked like a steamship but wonderful.
NO GARAGE DAMMIT! Barn doors too narrow and is 1883 logs; landlord would kill me. Has to sit out with the weather and cattle abuse (rubs and licks).
2 months ago I was able to retrieve an actual book-paper library I amassed over years and sitting in Helena. Whole trailer but ok if power goes out. Tons of art supplies as a hack cartoonist and "painter".

The remote states are the best ones. I grew up in a small North Dakota town of 1500 people. Moved to Fargo are in my early 20s, which is by far the biggest metro area in the state around 250,000 if you include Moorhead across the river, but i get all the luxuries of city life while only having to drive 10 minutes to be standing driving down a 2 lane highway with nothing but Fields for miles. Im in a sweet spot where I can drive a short distance to do my favorite recreational activities like hunting and fishing, while also living in a metro area big enough to support multiple Walmart's and big box stores for my shopping convenience. on top of that its way cheaper to live here than most of the US, so thats a huge plus too.

5:55 That bull head thing is on I-90 about 25 miles west of Sioux Falls SD. We passed it as usual on our trip to see husband's parents not too far down the road from there.
Everyone's got some gimmick to try to attract the scarce (until you get to the Black Hills) tourists to spend their money out there.
Most tourists only see the place in summer. Being married to a South Dakotan, I have seen that place in all seasons. Their winters are epic....there's nothing to stop the wind but a couple of barbed wire fences. I live in Wisconsin and though our winters can be nasty, the northern Great Plains has all the ideal ingredients for a brutal winter: Scarce trees. Rolling land. Constant wind. Open to Alberta Clippers (weather phenomenon that brings blizzards that shut down the interstates). And then suddenly a warm chinook wind will come up, melt the snow, then shift the other way and bring in subzero temperatures and refreeze everything in a matter of a few hours at most.
The record for fastest temperature rise (2 minutes) is in South Dakota, not surprising. It was -4F (-20C) at 7:30 AM on January 22 1943 and 2 minutes later it was 45F (7C). Of course, the wind changed again around 9 AM. The temperature had risen to 54F (12C) by that time but by 9:27 AM it was back down to -4F.
