Bit of trivia. Ricou Browning was the creator of Flipper. First the movies then the TV show . He also stages the underwater scenes in the movie Thunderball .
I got to see this film in a theater years ago in 3D with Julie Adams ,Ricou Browning and Ben Chapman all present . The 3D in the underwater scenes were especially good . I think 3D is more effective in B/W . I never felt the creature was a monster . After all, they came to him . Same with the sequels. They captured him and took him back and chained him in a tank . All he wanted was to go home.
Very true-the creature is in a way the victim of human curiosity.He didn’t ask for people to invade his corner of the world.On another note,it must’ve been great to watch the movie in 3D with Adams,Browning and Chapman present.
It’s a classic along with Frankenstein and Dracula movies from the 1930’s and 1940’s. I felt sorry for The creature in the same way you kind of feel sorry for Frankenstein. In the words of Jessica from who framed Roger rabbit, “I’m not bad- I was just drawn this way!”
Universal Studio wardrobe department: "Well, let's throw these costume parts in the dumpster now. No one will ever want these." Sixty years later - costume pieces recovered from dumpster sell for some outrageous fortune.
The Creature was a superb creation. Well ahead of it's time imo. The fact it was so well sculpted and designed really stood out and made it feel so 'modern' somehow. Also the fact it was so tight to the actors body is wonderful. You don't often see that in creature costume, even today.
When I was a kid in1968 we went on the Universal Studio's Tour in California. We were in the very back of the tram bus when it broke down in front of a costume warehouse on the lot, a large quonset hut type building. The large sliding door was partly open and I could see in and down at the end of the aisle was a Creature from the Black Lagoon costume, the whole suit on a rack thing.I was the only one too see it from the very back seat in the tram and everyone else was looking at the tour guide talking about something.I remember it so clearly because the movie really terrified me when i had seen it not long before that.

I've actually been to one of the parks where this was filmed, Wakulla Springs, Florida. The water is crystal clear which helps the visibility of the underwater scenes. In the welcome center, there's a Creature from the Black Lagoon poster as well as an Airport '77 poster, which was also filmed underwater there.
I remember several of the model kits in the 60's of the monsters in these films. The Creature was molded in green plastic. Some of them had glow in the dark parts as well. Frankenstein's monster, Dracula, Wolfman, Phantom of the Opera.
Great creature feature. Seeing this movie as a kid during a Halloween marathon on TV, I wasn't scared of the monster but I thought his appearance was fantastic (as an 8-year old, I definitely would have wanted that costume) 👹🐲
Number 4 on my list of favorite horror movies Rick...but definitely #1 as far as soundtracks go. That blaring horn sound when the creature would appear would jolt my 10 year old brain like no other movie...BIG thumbs up for this series you have made...luv it!!!

The Creature From the Black Lagoon rates at the top with all the best from Universal. He really not a predator but rather simply is *living*; *he* is the one intruded upon and attacked (even if for the good intentions of "science." It would be interesting to see the result if they tried to study him first more indirectly and let him get used to them. (Granted, he did kill the two guides left at the camp - but for all we know, there were study actions on site that suggested to the creature's instinctual thinking that they were harming his habitat, therefore a threat.) Really like this guy!

I have never seen this film, but from your descriptions, it does seem akin to Jaws in many ways. I saw Jaws in the theater probably opening day, and was screaming like everyone else in the audience. There is something very creepy about the unknown, especially underneath the water. I’d probably prefer a creature over a shark though! Love this series! 🧡👍👍👍👍
I recently came across a childhood toy from early 70s iirc. Its the rubber green creature from the black lagoon with the painted hands and face. My jaw hit the ground when I searched it and see they go for over $500!!!
Here's two more mind blowers: 1. Bud Westmore, the artist originally credited for designing the Creature, stole Millicent Patrick's designs after firing her & then slapped his name on her work. 2. Richard Denning was married to actress Evelyn Ankers who played opposite Lon Channy Jr in The Wolf Man.
In the scenes of the cavern where the Creature hangs out, you can see some strange-looking columns that look like they belong in an ancient temple. This is a backdrop from the earlier Universal film “Abbott and Costello Go To Mars” (actually, A&C land on VENUS!)
One of my top 5 favorite horror movies! One scene plays very well for creepiness.... it’s dark and the Creature has climbed aboard the boat and walking, arms outstretched towards the camera. You can see his gills working as he “breathes”...and those fish eyes! 😬

I'm a 'child of the 50s' and my favorite "Monster" is "The Creature from the Black Lagoon." I have an 'autographed' poster of "The Revenge of the Creature" signed by Ricoh Browning. By the way, my favorite Dracula was/is Christopher Lee. 'Famous Monsters of Filmland' was my favorite magazine as a kid.
I loved the Creature as a little girl. My youngest daughter did as well. When she was about 5, she wrote Ben Chapman. He wrote her back, exchanging letters several times. He was very sweet to do so.
I heard an incredible story about the making of the sequel, Revenge of the Creature. They used the heavier land-based costume for the scene where the Gillman grabs the girl out of the night club and jumps off the pier with her. She was able to swim to the surface, but the actor in the suit sank like a rock! His life was saved only by the quick thinking of some teenagers who were hanging around watching the shoot. They jumped in and pulled him up!

I didn't know about the wood carvings as the inspiration for the costuming, but I've always believed the creature, itself, was drawn heavily from H. P. Lovecraft's Deep Ones, as from Shadow Over Innsmouth ( my favorite of his stories). The erotic allusions depicted between the creature and the female protagonist especially seem to steer that direction.
The first time I saw this movie on TV at my friend's house, it scared the beejeezus out of me. I was just five or six years old. I was terrified on my walk home. It wasn't a long walk, but still, I was afraid of being attacked by a scary fish man.
Great movie. I introduced this movie to my kids when they were old enough and cracked them up when the creature first pops out of the water by saying "Which one of you peed in my pool!" I hope you'll do the original "The Thing from Another World" next. That is in mho the grand daddy of all alien films and paved the way for Alien, Predator and others.
I loved this movie as a kid of 10. I had a big crush on Julie Adams. The creature seemed so real to me. Loads of fun watching it over and over. My best friend and I went to the movies almost every Saturday afternoon . We saw "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "Cyclops" anything that we thought would be scarry ! Just typical 10 year old boys!👍
Creature from the Black Lagoon has to be my favorite movie monster. Combined with the music by Henry Mancini which amped up the scare factor. A side note, I was working as a computer operator in the midnight to 8 am shift, and I had just gotten the CD Henry Mancini in surround sound, that night I was working alone for some reason. I decided to play my new CD. When the creature music started I was getting scared just by the music. I was alone on this floor of the building with the other people on the floors below me. Needed to play some happier music to get through the rest of the night. It's is a great compilation of Mr. Mancini's film scores. The CD is called "Mancini in Surround: Mostly Monsters, Murders & Mysteries"
Isn't it interesting that after filming Creature, that when the costume was allegedly pitched in the dumpster, how fascinating that it must have been recycled when you see the creature on an episode of the Munsters, as Uncle Gilbert!!! Hmmm, interesting!!!!

Being an I Love Lucy fan, i’m not sure if you didn’t include this as a fun fact because it wasn’t quite on topic, or it might be new to you :-) Richard Denning who plays the scientist is also the actor who brought George Cooper to life in my favorite husband. MFH of course being the original Lucille Ball production that the TV series was later based on.
Yay for the shout out to Forry Ackerman! Famous Monsters of Filmland was my favorite magazine as a youngster. The Creature was an all-time favorite for me as a child. It was only as an adult though I realized I was also watching a movie that was mostly two gorgeous men in bathing suits for most of the time. I am 61 and loved when this would come on one of our 4 broadcast channels every year or two! Was so excited to see it. I loved the creature and did not want him hurt as he was one of the baddest and coolest things I had ever seen in a movie or anywhere else. Awesome!!
It's interesting to watch The Seven Year itch, in which Marilyn Monroe feels sorry for the Creature. I'm partial to him because he was my gateway to science fiction, fantasy, and horror. I was watching a local UHF station one lazy weekend when I was a little boy and the Creature came on and I was hooked. I had no idea what was going on but I knew that I liked it.
I completely agree with you on Creature being a precursor to Jaws. I don't know if Creature was officially the first movie about a monster that lurks in water, but it certainly popularized the idea. In my opinion, Creature is my personal favorite out of the classic Universal monster movies. Even though it came out long after the classic other Universal monster movies. Lets face it, Gillman is considered to be the last of the old school monsters. And I don't see a problem with that.
When I was in high school, the teacher had us watching this movie WITH 3-D glasses, talk about freaky, it was, however you got the idea of being at the theater seeing it in that format!!
I remember sometime in the early 1980's my dad brought home 3-D glasses from a store ( It seems like maybe it was called King Quick). Anyway, they were promoting The Creature from the Black Lagoon which would be aired in 3-D on Halloween night. I remember the anticipation I had that whole week we had to wait til Halloween. That was the first time I ever saw the movie and it remains one of my all time favorites.
It was also filmed at the old Marineland Park in NE Florida. The park is now a dolphin research center, but they still have some of the movie props. Of course you have to take the tour to see these items which are behind and below the pools. Park is right on the Atlantic Ocean beach front, south of ST. Augustine.
The Creature was my favorite of the time I had all of the models of every monster from every movie you spoke of. I remember watching the 3D version on TV when Count Scarry played it, got the glasses from 7 eleven...alot better times then.
I really liked this film as a kid growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. I got the distinct impression it was not aired as often as some of the other classic horror films, remember in those days we had only our tv and a only few stations at that!. I probably rank this movie second or third with Frankenstein and the Wolfmam . I did feel sorry for the creature in this one and I believe that was what they were going for, I thought the actress was very beautiful. Once again Rick, excellent trivia knowledge, thanks for making another great video! Professional or not, 4 minutes is actually dangerous, I doubt they would even consider asking a stuntman to do that nowadays especially with the recent death during a rehearsal
This is part of the horror power pack: frankenstein, dracula, the wolfman, the mummy and the creature. Any of them in a movie was top quality entertainment, without a doubt. The designer of the creature did a fantastic job of creating a human-like, aquatic 'creature'. The gill design skin, fins and the face. Very fish-like and the lifeless eyes. I had sympathy for the creature. Similar to King Kong in that way. I've enjoyed your showcasing each of these horror icons. They all sure deserve it.
There is a boiling river in Amazon, there are unnamed fish, unknown animals why not the creature? vampires and werewolves may go anywhere ...the creature sticks to water so I know I could stay out that pool

We lived on a farm, with a Swamp next to the house, that my dad was turning into ponds, and I watched this movie by myself at around 8 yrs old on TV, I will never forget it, scared the 💩 out of me!
AND...this film was made in 3D as well! Love the Sci-Fi from the 50's. Very innovative. I would consider the 50's as the "Silver Age", with the Golden age being mostly from the 30's thru the 40's. Would probably lump the early silent films into the Golden Age as well. Thanks Rick for all the work and research you put into your channel!
It's the first underwater 3D movie. I saw it in a revival theater in 35mm double-projector 3D. Amazing. Like a block of water is hanging out from the screen with people swimming in it.

I think we feel bad because the creature wasn't bothering anyone until they invaded his turf, which he tried to defend like any animal would.

The first time I saw this movie on TV at my friend's house, it scared the beejeezus out of me. I was just five or six years old. I was terrified on my walk home. It wasn't a long walk, but still, I was afraid of being attacked by a scary fish man.

Great movie. I introduced this movie to my kids when they were old enough and cracked them up when the creature first pops out of the water by saying "Which one of you peed in my pool!" I hope you'll do the original "The Thing from Another World" next. That is in mho the grand daddy of all alien films and paved the way for Alien, Predator and others.
I loved this movie as a kid of 10. I had a big crush on Julie Adams. The creature seemed so real to me. Loads of fun watching it over and over. My best friend and I went to the movies almost every Saturday afternoon . We saw "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "Cyclops" anything that we thought would be scarry ! Just typical 10 year old boys!👍
Creature from the Black Lagoon has to be my favorite movie monster. Combined with the music by Henry Mancini which amped up the scare factor. A side note, I was working as a computer operator in the midnight to 8 am shift, and I had just gotten the CD Henry Mancini in surround sound, that night I was working alone for some reason. I decided to play my new CD. When the creature music started I was getting scared just by the music. I was alone on this floor of the building with the other people on the floors below me. Needed to play some happier music to get through the rest of the night. It's is a great compilation of Mr. Mancini's film scores. The CD is called "Mancini in Surround: Mostly Monsters, Murders & Mysteries"

Isn't it interesting that after filming Creature, that when the costume was allegedly pitched in the dumpster, how fascinating that it must have been recycled when you see the creature on an episode of the Munsters, as Uncle Gilbert!!! Hmmm, interesting!!!!
Good point! This was the 50s version of Jaws and a film ahead of its time. I can still remember the night back in the 70s when I first saw this, sweet childhood memory.
I saw this as a child in the '60's on our B/W TV... scared the crap out of me and I loved that... I hope they never remake this.

Richard Denning who plays the scientist is also the actor who brought George Cooper to life in my favorite husband. MFH of course being the original Lucille Ball production that the TV series was later based on.

Yay for the shout out to Forry Ackerman! Famous Monsters of Filmland was my favorite magazine as a youngster. The Creature was an all-time favorite for me as a child. It was only as an adult though I realized I was also watching a movie that was mostly two gorgeous men in bathing suits for most of the time. Funny to see the movie through two different sets of eyes. Thank you for all these videos Rick - awesome work!

I am 61 and loved when this would come on one of our 4 broadcast channels every year or two! Was so excited to see it. I loved the creature and did not want him hurt as he was one of the baddest and coolest things I had ever seen in a movie or anywhere else. Awesome!!

I remember seeing this in about 1961 and I love this movie. Was not scared a bit just loved the creature. Built a model of it about a year later.
It's interesting to watch The Seven Year itch, in which Marilyn Monroe feels sorry for the Creature. I'm partial to him because he was my gateway to science fiction, fantasy, and horror. I was watching a local UHF station one lazy weekend when I was a little boy and the Creature came on and I was hooked. I had no idea what was going on but I knew that I liked it.
I completely agree with you on Creature being a precursor to Jaws. I don't know if Creature was officially the first movie about a monster that lurks in water, but it certainly popularized the idea. In my opinion, Creature is my personal favorite out of the classic Universal monster movies. Even though it came out long after the classic other Universal monster movies. Lets face it, Gillman is considered to be the last of the old school monsters. And I don't see a problem with that.
When I was in high school, the teacher had us watching this movie WITH 3-D glasses, talk about freaky, it was, however you got the idea of being at the theater seeing it in that format!!
I remember sometime in the early 1980's my dad brought home 3-D glasses from a store ( It seems like maybe it was called King Quick). Anyway, they were promoting The Creature from the Black Lagoon which would be aired in 3-D on Halloween night. I remember the anticipation I had that whole week we had to wait til Halloween. That was the first time I ever saw the movie and it remains one of my all time favorites.
I lost my wallet when I was so scared I hid under my seat in the theater watching this movie. I also would not go in the lake for a few weeks.
It was also filmed at the old Marineland Park in NE Florida. The park is now a dolphin research center, but they still have some of the movie props. Of course you have to take the tour to see these items which are behind and below the pools. Park is right on the Atlantic Ocean beach front, south of ST. Augustine.
They had monster models back then.was fun gluing and painting the creature!

The Creature was my favorite of the time I had all of the models of every monster from every movie you spoke of. I remember watching the 3D version on TV when Count Scarry played it, got the glasses from 7 eleven...alot better times then.
One of my favorite horror movies. The Black Lagoon, sounds so dangerous. Obviously a lot more scary when I was a kid but still enjoy it today.
I really liked this film as a kid growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. I got the distinct impression it was not aired as often as some of the other classic horror films, remember in those days we had only our tv and a only few stations at that!. I probably rank this movie second or third with Frankenstein and the Wolfmam . I did feel sorry for the creature in this one and I believe that was what they were going for, I thought the actress was very beautiful. Once again Rick, excellent trivia knowledge, thanks for making another great video! Professional or not, 4 minutes is actually dangerous, I doubt they would even consider asking a stuntman to do that nowadays especially with the recent death during a rehearsal

This is part of the horror power pack: frankenstein, dracula, the wolfman, the mummy and the creature. Any of them in a movie was top quality entertainment, without a doubt.
The designer of the creature did a fantastic job of creating a human-like, aquatic 'creature'. The gill design skin, fins and the face. Very fish-like and the lifeless eyes.
I had sympathy for the creature. Similar to King Kong in that way. I've enjoyed your showcasing each of these horror icons. They all sure deserve it.

there are unnamed fish, unknown animals why not the creature? vampires and werewolves may go anywhere ...the creature sticks to water so I know I could stay out that pool

We lived on a farm, with a Swamp next to the house, that my dad was turning into ponds, and I watched this movie by myself at around 8 yrs old on TV, I will never forget it, scared the 💩 out of me!
I remember when this was showed on the television it scared my sister and I so badly. It's part of the reason why I don't watch scary movies today 😂
AND...this film was made in 3D as well! Love the Sci-Fi from the 50's. Very innovative. I would consider the 50's as the "Silver Age", with the Golden age being mostly from the 30's thru the 40's. Would probably lump the early silent films into the Golden Age as well. Thanks Rick for all the work and research you put into your channel!
First time i watched this movie was back in the late sixties as a 5yr old , never forgot it , shat myself , loved it
Had the plastic model as a kid. Loved it.
It's the first underwater 3D movie. I saw it in a revival theater in 35mm double-projector 3D. Amazing. Like a block of water is hanging out from the screen with people swimming in it.
This scared the crap out of me as a kid. I think my most scary memory of a movie was The Fly with Vincent Price.
It also was released in 3D. I bought a copy in super 8 mm film. They even included the 3D glasses. It was a blast!
