Past Schat's is US-6. It's the longest single road in the US. There is a mileage sign that says how far it is to the other end just outside of town.
Take that to US-95 and find another out of this world interesting drive. Go north toward Boise. There's even a sign that says "Lobster Crossing" and it has a real story behind it.

Great episode! Anyone who watched The Twilght Zone will love this episode!
Seeing the cafe/gas station in this episode reminded me of trips with my family in the late 1950s and early 1960s. What great memories!
These cafes were great. Good, simple food with (usually) good service and interesting decor. Depending on the location, these cafes would often display items of local history and interest.
Love the gas station, too. Again, depending on the oil company and the owner, these service stations were often run by WWII vets who could literally fix anything.
The set decorations inside the cafe were right out of the post-era. Classic!

Hollywood has been filming in the Owens Valley since the 1920s. I was born just up the road in Lone Pine and grew up in Independence and Bishop. I remember my Dad working for the Inyo County Sheriff's office, worked security for the set of "Joe Kidd" filmed up in Buttermilk west of Bishop. Lots of TV commercials where filmed in the Eastern Sierra, CHP would close the road for the latest car commercial just about every summer. You should try and find the locations at Owenyo and Keeley where they filmed "Bad Day at Blackrock". If you look at "Gunga Din" 1939 and "Iron Man" 2008 both were filmed in the Alabama Hill by Lone Pine.

@@EricCraig-km4sb Grant, if that is the Twilight Zone filming location we're seeing here, is only 35 miles, about a half-hour, south of the Manzanar historic site along US 395. Living in Los Angeles circa 2002 - 2008, I often drove through that area on weekend photo trips via Bishop, up through Silver Canyon's 4WD trail into the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, or, on other weekends, from Lone Pine to Death Valley NP. Lone Pine, on highway 395 only ten miles or so south of Manzanar and 25 miles from Grant, was my usual base of operations for those trips. That Twilight Zone episode is a favorite but never realized that was the filming location.

I hated Shakespeare so I asked my teacher if I could do a book Felton a book I chose. Mrs. Nelson was ok with that if it meant I’d pick up another book and read it. She said what book are we talking about? I said I want to read and do a report on Fail Safe by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler. She said that book is hardly 10 years old do you think it holds up against Shakespeare. I said it means more now than a 250 year old book does.

Kind of reminds me of the 1990 film, "Tremors". Tremors was filmed in the same valley in Lone Pine and Darwin, CA, 25 minutes north of the Airflite Cafe location depicted in the Twilight Zone.Another interesting fact about this valley. Manzanar War Relocation Center, which was the internment camp for Japanese-Americans in World War II is 35 minutes north of this same location. If you see wartime pics of this camp, it had that same, stark look.

I've been watching The Twilight Zone since I was a kid when it first came out. I remember this one and the other episode that you mentioned. I have seen them all, many times. Loved This post. Thank You & Best Regards.

Interesting! Excellent job on "sleuthing"! This particular show has always been one of my favorite TZ episodes and I've watched it many times over the years. WikiPedia puts the original air date at April 7, 1961, which puts me at 4-years-old... I'm 67 now. It's just unreal how a life can get behind you. THANKS for this video! I'm subscribing after watching this and the previous one about which hat Cliff Robertson should have worn.

People definitely live behind that building... pulled up to the side of the Diner a couple years ago near sunset to relieve myself on the way up to Mammoth... had just finished and got yelled at and dogs started barking ! Ran back to my truck jumped in and hightailed out of there !😜

Only thing , in your synopsis of rip van winkle, you mentioned that a bank was robbed. In reality,
    It was a gold train.
Thanks for all your work. Kerry it up.

Wow! This was one of my favorite episodes of the Twilight Zone. I used to live off of 395 and used to go past this place going up to my Aunt's house. I remember this little cafe building, I want to say it was built during the late 1930s and, early 1940s before WW2. There used to be a lot of military traffic out there. Too bad the little town of Grant never really took off, not much of a going concern. It is still charming to look at this place again and imagine a more lucrative time.

Bridgeport, where Out of the Past was filmed is north of there. Lots of movies shot near there. And don't forget the history of the water diversion to LA.... think Muholland, Chinatown, St. Francis Dam disaster, and all that went around around Olancha. Lots of history out there.

Good job. I have traveled up 395 for many years now. Matter of fact I passed through Grant last weekend (August 17, 2024). The rock building on the west side opposite the diner was an old gas station and I remember it being open in the mid '70s. I never ever noticed the cafe as I always look at the old rock gas station whenever I pass by to see the shape and deterioration it is in after all the years. Next time I will be sure to check out the cafe.

Great job Rick! This type of thing could be a new sub-series for you.
Someone could turn it into a tourist location trap, like of like Port Merrion in Northern Wales is for The Prisoner.

I'm sure he gets most of his information from "The Twilight Zone Companion" by Marc Scott Zicree. That book mentions that the filming location was around Lone Pine, CA and that it was the same area where they filmed "The Rip Van Winkle Caper".

Thank you for providing this video on a film location. You didn't mention it but Grant is west of and directly adjacent to Death Valley. H395 is an intriguing driving experience as it meanders along the Easter Sierra.

I just looked at the photos and could tell in was filmed on the road below the Eastern Sierra on HWY 395. I knew it when I was about 10 years old when it was first shown on the Twilight Zone. We used to travel on Hwy. 395 when I was a kid and my family was going camping in the Sierras. I've loved this episode for years.

In that old gas station, the owner had hundreds of arrowheads found just across the highway to the west. I did see them in about 1973 in frames all around the station office.

Thanks for highlighting this location. The 395 is a great desolate north-south drag on California's distal spine. A couple hours to Mammoth & Mono Lake, past the otherworldly Alabama Hills, majestic Mt. Whitney and the 4000 year old Bristlecone Pines. So isolated you can actually see the stars.

That was one of my favorites too. Being a fan of The Twilight Zone there are some great ones. They made another one going forward in time. A WWl pilot in a biplane goes through a weird cloud and landed at an airbase in the future. I think filmed at Norton Air Base, San Bernardino? Also one of my favorites.

The irony is that it was less deserted in the 1960's . But I recognized it immediately the first time I saw it. A gas station south of here was also used as a set in TV and movies. It was open last time I drove past selling olives.

I saw that episode as a rerun in 1963, when I was seven years old. I did wonder where it had been filmed, but assumed it was on the way towards Las Vegas, possibly San Jacinto. Thank you for going to the trouble to track it down.
