In '03 I bought a Ram 2500 CTD 3rd gen. (Before AEV was a big name), and set it up kind of like AEV is now in late '04, knowing the possibilities and advantages with these big trucks. Prior to the launch of AEV Rams (AEV Brutes were out, and getting popular),years ago at an Overland Expo in AZ, a few of us Ram owners got to have a group talk with reps from Chrysler, AEV Dave, & Scott Brady, during a Jeep talk. They asked if they could shift the talk to "full size Ram trucks" and wanted to inquire about these big rigs, and what we had done to them for "overlanding". About 5 or 6 of us chimed in. The panel took note, and Dave / AEV & Chrysler ran with it...... Who woulda thunk ! I'm still running my '03 Ram 2500 CTD, 6 speed manual, stock 4:11 gears, open front, LSD rear, 37 inch tires on stock wheels, 3" VR suspension (Kore-Carli-Thuren hybrid of my own mix), winch bumper, heavy full size spare rack and #2 35" spare underneath. Sometimes a 750 pound camper, sometimes just a topper, sometimes a 300 pound rare "Box Tent", coming up on 20 years / 150,000 miles, and a countless trail list under it's belt. By no means a rock crawler, but the San Juans as you have done including Black Bear, COBDR, Mojave, Canyonlands, Death Valley.....the objective of getting "way out there" with all my desired gear in a larger platform and a decent roof over my head. ( Still run my JKU a lot too) Wish-list is still that Habitat or Snap Treehouse ! I am ever impressed at what these big trucks can do, with the loads we haul and the terrain we push thru, with no lockers. You've got a sweet set up. Enjoy the vids.
Great vid. We drove by you Sat morn where you were camping at the Michael Beene mine waiting on Kevin. We were in a built Red 4Runner. Truck looks great.
That wall is a beast. I was up there just a couple of weeks after this video was filmed, and got told by a Ouray resident who, apparently, had in fact rolled their half ton full size off that...to just ignore that it is there and imagine the whole trial just doesn't exist, driving my Raptor. lol. I heeded that advice, and watching this, since I was solo and just bumbling around taking photos...am glad I did. hah. The line you took with the AEV on 40s definitely ate it up without leftovers. Gotta dig it!
Honestly, if I had been alone I would have taken the bypass. I’ve wheeled with Kevin many times and trust his talent for spotting. And with that local there to show us the right line, that was an an enormous help.
I've run it in a F-150. It's not that difficult. Hells gate obstacle in Moab is way worse. A Raptor on good tires should have no problem running that whole trail and the wall.
@@123-o8u1j one of the days when I've some friends I trust with me, I'll probably give it a go. But the trip I was on was totally solo, and the end goal was near Baja. Getting myself stranded by myself that early in the trip seemed a dumb idea, and while stubborn, I'm not stupid. lol.
@AnsLand I ran Imogene then Poughkeepsie Gulch then Black Bear pass in August in a 99 F-150 I built. I never listen to Jeep people they think that Jeeps are the only Off-road vehicle. I use my truck and have run over 50 Colorado trails. It's older but has never let me down. Having 2 or 3 rigs definitely helps. We ran those 3 trails solo just me and my woman spotting.
I want a prospector xl. I saw a recall coming out on the 2500 and 3500 for transmission problems with fire, 2019 through 2022 not for the high out put.
Why did you sell the white truck, which was basically equipped very similarly to get the AEV PXL? Just the factory warranty since they have a relationship with RAM?
Fun video sir, very much enjoyed it...very familiar like I'm having deja vu 🤭 You are so right about video and steepness. I was there recently and the hills look flat on my footage. I'm in SC, let me know if you ever want company heading West
Sweet! Your rig is awesome! I think I took the exact same line on that wall with my 3500. I was there in September, I wonder if I just missed you. Did you do Black Bear?
@@SwellRunner yes, we did blackbear pass. Have to be honest, it’s not something I ever want to do again in a full-size truck. when we got down to the bottom a group of guys we didn’t know gave us a standing ovation and immediately offered us beers. Over landers are the best. The truck is too big for the switchbacks. I mean I made it, but the front tire was literally on the edge on that first big turn which is the eroding. My wife kept telling me to pull more forward and that made me think more about my life insurance policy and the depth of our love (hehe 😍). We ended up getting through it… Thankfully. We’ve done other trails like Lippencott, mine Road in death Valley, Steele pass and a bunch of Moab, like white rim some places which were pretty tight with rocks, and the truck did amazing. Honestly, I think the limitations for blackbear were me, not the vehicle. Just depends on how comfortable you are hanging your rig over the edge of 1000 foot cliff. Poughkeepsie was great though, I loved watching that 8000 pound vehicle conquer the wall. I got my initial route from another TH-camr who drives the green Land Cruiser, maybe outlaw Overland I think he’s pretty awesome too. I wish I had seen your video first and it would’ve helped me too. Got into over landing in 2020, watched a lot of your videos and built my wife’s 4runner first, then the truck for me in 2020 as well. Our kids love it. We were so thankful for the content that you produced, as well as others to help guide us in selection of vehicles, routes, etc. Also, just letting me know that regular dudes can do this i.e. not gearheads lol.
@@SwellRunner omg hahaha😅🤣🤣 I did see it but at the end of the video when you where talking with the cab behinde and didn't see the spare there and I completely forgot it was on the rear swing😂😅 my bad. Question though, would the 40" spare fit where the stock spare goes under the truck?
PLEASE build up the experience and courage to run Black Bear Pass next year in your Prospector XL and do a proper video on it. The video would no doubt certainly get mass views and your videography skills would set it apart from the other videos of full size trucks on Black Bear. The truck bed is big enough to bring a wheel barrow so that you can put your massive balls into it to carry them around town once you make the descent and reach the bottom. Cheers from Denver Colorado!
I live in lower SC all flat Herr so my should be good here, just when I head north or west the most probably will be different. I20 around here is 70 mph. With the power wagon we're should I be sitting at With mpg. Now around the area I live is 35 to 55 depending.
You have to realize these come as OE spec - AEV doesn't crack the drivetrain/driveline at all - that's all factory from Ram. I know people that have locked the front and rear, but I've never felt the need. The limited slip diffs are pretty good.
@@ShaunsJeep I think I read somewhere they don't do lockers on the diesel trucks because the locker can't handle the 1000lbs of torque. Not 100% sure though.

Super impressed with how the Prospector handled that obstacle! What a beast!
Such a beast.
Have you finally learned that the Ram hd platform conquers obstacles with much less effort? If it fits it will make it. Awesome new vehicle!

You made the trail, and especially opening/closing the tent look so effortless! 👏🏻
Nice video! Jason, have you thought about installing lockers?
Yep. Sure have. Even got a quote on the last truck too! But never felt like I needed them! The limited slip diff does great. Huge tires help too
Your truck made that “wall” look easy. I really enjoyed watching it climb in Kevin’s video. Just as enjoyable again on your channel.
Thanks Sean

Funny, my first time wintering down in AZ and all these vids I'm watching are making me wish I was back home in CO!
Oof. Not right now!! It’s cold up there!!
Those rigs are beautiful.
Wow! Nice job on the wall! No doubt a great spot helped, but that's a serious badge-earner.
This is awesome got to love when your rig does what you think it can’t :)

I saw a shot of your truck bed with your 20lb propane tank in a milk crate. Great solution as propane tank brackets are ridiculously overpriced.
What tire carrier are you using? Has to be beefy to haul that 40 around!
I’ve been wanting to go full size for a long time. It’s between the new Tundra and this for sure. Maybe I’ll have to buy a fake AEV though lol.
Get a Power Wagon..,
Hey man what tire pressure are you running aired down?
Love your channel, Jason. Sorry if you've answered this before, but what is the wheelbase on your Prospector XL?
Do you have lockers on the Prospector XL? ARB lockers?
I know AEV does not do this in their factory.

Jackson Ellis with Glendale Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram in Glendale California.

What’s your opinion on your 4Runner + Turtleback Trailer combo compared to the Prospector XL as a rig for a family of 4 to 5?
Where did you move the the spare 40" tire to? Does it fit under the truck where the stock spare tire goes?
It’s on the rear swingout. Did you not see it in the video? Lol

Looking at a F150 hybrid for the 7.2kW battery....
What tailgate insert with cup holders is that on the prospector ?
It’s from AL offroad.
How do you like the RIGD system? I have a 5th gen 4runner, which you also used to have, and I keep debating full rear bumper or RIGD.
Love it so far - especially the ability to take it off and not deal with a swingout all the time.

Is it detrimental not having lockers on this truck?
Haven’t been stuck yet
Or looking at a power wagon from AEV
Just be prepared for the 6-8 mpgs. Pw is a great platform with 35s
10mpgs up and down the mountains on 38s Nittos...PW it’s a better investment
