Very good talk! The one bigot most people don't see is the one they can't see unless they look in a mirror. The truth is that ALL of us are bigots in one way or another. It's just how our perception works if we're not mindful of it. And being mindful of it is not something to do once, but each and every day.
In the spirit of honest feedback, I think you have swapped one closed system of thinking for another. The definition of bigotry references the individual, but it can only be applied in the context of groups, because one can't be a bigot against a single individual. That's just a grudge. But the *application* of the term "bigot" in reality means associating someone with a group of people who's opinions by another person or group of people to be *irrational or inappropriate.* My point in your case is that by referencing yourself by group identity, you have simply swapped out what patterns you see in yourself, patterns you see in your environment, and changed your premise for judgment. The judgment is still there because it is the same process you used to reorganize which group you belonged to. If that was your intent, more power to you and I'm glad you found what you are looking for. But if you really want to attempt getting around the intuitive judgment, it seems to me the only way to do that is to force one's self to admit that no matter how convincing human pattern spotting (and subsequent categorization ie prejudice) is, we as individuals don't have the informational context to inform us about groups from the outside. As an example, I can *call* my mexican group of friends mexican, but because I lack the context of experientially being mexican or spending lots of time with them, I don't understand what mexican means the way they do. Accordingly, the honest answer is that whatever patterns I've recognized about a few mexicans has no place in any of my judgments or assessments as they are anecdotal and extremely filtered by my interpretation. The only honest thing for me to do is deal with each mexican friend (and by extension each person i know) individually without assigning them groups to "understand" them. I don't know if you will read any of this or will read this far even, but I'd be glad to hear your feedback, as this is a work in process for me too, and if im being honest I hope my opinions in 5 years aren't what they are today. Anyway hope you are doing well, thanks for the Ted talk and your time.
Hey Doug, this was great! I am currently reading one of your books sorry theater method and am gaining so much. I wanted to find more examples of your work so here I ended up. Thoughts on the talk was it was awesome. We all have tendencies to judge other people and that is at the core of our world falling apart. I hope more people see this because it is really powerful and in our world where we have mastered the art of destroying others because they are not like us this is very powerful. Lastly, on a personal note you will forever have an impact on my life and want to say thank you. You have helped me see the power of stories and how we as humans crave connecting over them. Thank you for all the work you've done in your life to share your realizations. 🙏
This is a really powerful talk, with a lot of difficult truths and insightful self-reflection. You give us an important reminder that when we respond to hate with hate, it pulls all of us down into the pit of bigotry.
Doug, your storytelling abilities are epic. Couple that with the message you delivered in this Tedx talk and you ascend to yet another level that encapsulates the totality of the man you are. Thank you for that. If I was on the CPAE committee, you'd be a nominee ... and then a recipient. Well done, my friend. Well done.
So in order to to stop being a bigot would it be okay if we start tolerating other true bigots ? The only thing that differentiate between us and other animals is the capacity to discriminate. We should not be empathetic towards intolerant people, since that would be suicidal.
I don't understand this talk? You can't talk to all bigots. They don't want to know. If you try to talk to them it doesn't mean you hate them, or that you are a bigot yourself. The problem with bigots is that if it becomes extreme, it can actually be harmful to the groups they are bigoted about. That is the reason people who are not bigoted try to talk to them. Once you realise you can't talk to them yes I agree you need to look inside yourself and go to protests, vote etc. You can even keep being compassionate and kind to bigots. But this is not necessarily going to change them. Leftists are not fighting the right with hate, they are fighting them with reason. Ignoring the problem is not going to make it go away but if you cannot reason with a bigot you need to leave it and hope they realise by themselves. Voting is useful to get rid of bigots but is not going to end the problem completely as they always come back arounf. There is no solution.
I put your final words of my fridge so that everyone in my family can be reminded. I Look forward to the day when we, as a humanity, can do better. Thanks for sharing your words with us!
As always Doug, you are a great story teller. I remember clearly the lessons I learnt from you on the weekend course in London we did many moons ago. Your message here is excellent and the phrase that pays works really well. Thank you
That was as good as any sermon I've ever heard! And it's a message that our country really needs at this time, more than ever. I wasn't at all surprised to hear the part about your wonderful wife Deborah setting you on the right track when you returned from Denver. She is such a guiding light, and I'm so grateful to have her as my friend.
Very eloquent, Doug, and so very timely and thought provoking. And you hit the ole nail on the head about voting. As a speaker, I appreciated not only the message but the organizational structure, layered nuance, and hours of practice I could see (and hear) that went into composing and then performing this speech. You are a true inspiration and role model. Marvelous job! Thank you!
Masterful storytelling with combination of memories and recent experiences. Plus you let us inside your head, your heart and some dark places. Most of all, a critically important message. That the message is told so memorably will help it stick. "Find common ground."
You’re so funny! Met some of these people in one small place. We need more stories like yours.:) “Find the common ground ....let your voice be heard....how do you to talk to a bigot.” Wow
That's really nice of you, but you're not going to stop the fascists by hugging them. By trying to be inclusive. I have no problem being bigoted towards fascists. Not a single ounce of shame about it. In an individual one on one conversation I will try to be nice and find common ground but once it doesn't work, deals off the table. And I'm not even giving that grace in a group setting. Your ability to think and perceive a common ground is not an effective weapon of persuasion against fascism. Rather, it promotes inaction against them apathy towards their agendas and allows said agenda to flourish. You might as well go be a card carrying party member, you're doing their work. Only passively.
Jigaboos to Africa? Why not? Africa is not what they told you it is! We are a continent of values, morals and love. And did I mention that we are not Europeans or aspire to European values and morals? The global image of Africa has forever being intentionally distorted by western media and operatives. Africa is the place to be now as before. It is a continent of more than 50 countries and languages and cultures. We are a continent of more than a billion souls and minds. Tell the world Africa is the home of all human life. Put respect on our name. Most Caucasians are bigoted and think their way of life is better than.
Let’s do less thanking of a white male that he was self aware enough to accept he discriminated and give him more responsibilities. I refuse to thank anyone with privilege for acknowledging it, what will you do now? Like can this man train young men to not be horrible? I’m a white woman and I refuse to say thanks or good job. Be an ally. That is Dougs life work.
I realise that we've been desperately trying to brainwash you.. And I'm deeply sorry.. I'll do my best to put a stop to this vile invasive disruption of your natural way of being as soon as humanly possible.. And please forgive me also for even being remotely associated with those odd people...
This is Doug Stevenson. I'd love to hear your thoughts on my TEDx talk. Thanks for watching.

Playing nice with bigots is like throwing pearls before swine.
I’ve tried, I’ve failed, and I’ve given up.

Thanks Susan. I appreciate your thoughts.
You can’t reason with a bigot. Dismissing them with an incredulous smile really hurts however.
Very timely to come across this the first week of June 2020. Thank you.

If you are intolerant of a hate group, where is the problem? I don't get this 😕
Intolerance is hate according to the new definition of the word.
