This was such a great episode, had me on edge the whole time! And fun fact, this episode was written by Steven Moffat who was the show runner for Doctor Who from 2010-2017 (and he’s also responsible for some of the show’s best episodes since 2005!)

As a big fan of DW since n1964, I loved this episode and caught all the easter eggs, the last line of the doctors, "all that survives of us is love" Comes from a poem called 'Tomb of Arundel' by an English poet called Phillip Larkin, who could be called a 'sad man' his poems were known for being quite melancholic. 😢😊 😢

The weaponfields of Villengard were mentioned way back in serires 1 (2005) during Moffats first episode of the revival. So it's interesting he focused his first episode of the next revival on the weapons of villengard.
You are right, at every jumping on point for the show, they'll typically make the first 3 or 4 episodes VERY different from each other, just to give you a flavor of the "rules" of the show. You'll settle into the different styles (horror, drama, suspense, historical, emotional, romance, alien, etc) and find the style that resonates most with you, then when these types of episodes come on you'll get excited even more for them.

To quote the Doctor in space babies, "I'm not saying everything is connected, and yet... Things connect."
Very rarely are things in Doctor who not intentional or connected in and way. Many have pointed out that the Valenguard have been mentioned before, and the Anglican soldiers as well (wait until you go back and meet the "tall/short, fat/thin, gay Anglican Marines") but so much more connects. The snow is connected to Ruby's origin. The ambulance getting stuck when looking up Ruby's next of kin. The actress playing the face of the ambulance was also the lady serving tea in the last episode, and I've of the crewmen that abandoned the baby factory in the one before, and a person in the club watching Ruby play in the Christmas special. (She also appeared in another of the 60th anniversary specials) Even the actress that plays Mundi is maybe connected in a way we don't even know yet (she'd been announced to be joining next season, but will she be this character or someone else? Will there be a connection between them?)
Even "throwaway" lines like when he talked about living there with his granddaughter in 1963 connect (this was the plot of the original 1st season).

You're right about the episodes having different styles, that's sort of the beauty of the show, they can literally go anywhere in time and space, which means the genre of an episode can switch in a heartbeat, there's nothing holding them back from any genre, for any episode. It means the show is always fresh and new, because they can literally do anything, and it means every new episode, we have no idea what to expect, which is incredibly exciting as a fan.

I see a lot of people judging these episodes based on what came before, but it's really refreshing seeing an actual newcomer commenting on these episodes since this is meant to be a brand new jumping on point in the same way the 2005 series. We have no idea why the future human church has a military arm, it just exists, roll with it :) The Villengard arms factories were first mentioned waaaay back in 2005. The mix in styles is the best way to do a series IMO...it's a family show, but rather than trying to please everyone at the same time, give everyone their turn. On top of that being a show where you can do anything a series should represent that with variety, during the series when the variety is slim things can get a bit boring even if stories are decent.

I don’t know much about poetry but searching “what remains of us is love” led me to Philip Larkin: “An Arundel Tomb” on a poetry foundation website. They have a guide to the poem as well as the text of the poem. The quote is from the last line of the poem.
The discussion of the poet and the meaning of the poem is interesting. I skimmed it briefly. It seems to be ambiguous as to whether the last line is truth or a lie we need to be true.
Much like the girl’s insistence that her father is just dead but not gone. Is that really true or is it her faith in that belief that sustains her in a situation that would crush a lot of people. The Doctor said that sometimes faith is necessary.
Now I’m wondering how many of the faithful will have their faith challenged by the fact that they’ve been fighting against a weapons marketing campaign and not the inhabitants of this planet.

  • @Stephen-Fox

Yeah, this show can definitely go from campy fair to this intense, more serious, tone. And often does from week to week (although, as you guessed, quite often the lighter fair goes towards the front of a season with the heavier stuff towards the back end). It doesn't often do 'most of the episode takes place over a single scene,' mind, and there's definitely something added to any episode, of any show, when it's able to do that.
I fully support you sticking with just this season for now. At the end of it, if you fancy going back then there will be time between the end of this season and the next Christmas Special. Maybe starting with the 60th specials, but after those three, there's a... Lot... of Who to pick and choose from. And for the most part it's episodic (with some season long arcs, particularly since the show came back in 2005, but even there most stories are mostly standalone so it's not the worst approach to pick and choose the stories that have better reputations that interest you, and then if there's a Doctor or companion you want to see more of because you particularly liked their performance focus in on their stories for a while)
Prior to Gatwa's era which you've started with there were, I believe, 303 stories across 39 seasons (plus some specials) now. That's not something that anyone should be considering 'watch from start to present in production order' as a primary means of engaging with the archive. Start from the season you start with, then sample the prior eras of the show based on what sounds interesting to you is always my recommendation.
