Mark clearly couldn't afford food back then. He was spending all his money on guitars. He had well over 100 very expensive guitars by 1980. I remember seeing a photo of the collection. Today, a lot of it is on sale at Sotheby's, and many items have been auctioned off.
The story behind it is well-known and can easily be found online: "The lyrics were inspired by a performance of a Dixieland jazz band playing in the corner of an almost empty pub in Deptford, South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer announced their name, the Sultans of Swing; Knopfler found the contrast between the group's dowdy appearance and surroundings and their grandiose name amusing."
