- Preeti Patil, MD, Rachelle Rectenwald, and Roberta Kiefer speak about Childhood Vision & UPMC/WPSBC Garden Collaboration.
Dr. Patil is a pediatric ophthalmologist and neuro-ophthalmologist. Her primary clinical and research interests lie in neuro-ophthalmic conditions such as cortical visual impairment in children and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. She runs a Nystagmus clinic at CHP and is interested in the management of this complex condition including the underlying causes, different forms of nystagmus and the associated genetic conditions, and the medical and surgical management of these cases.
Rachelle Rectenwald began her career at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children as a volunteer in the recreational pool while attending and swimming for the University of Pittsburgh in 1990. She became a full-time para-educator in 1992 and completed her B.A. in 1993. In 1997, she earned her M.Ed. with a dual certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist and accepted a position as a classroom teacher. In 2005, she completed her Supervisory Certification in Special Education and welcomed a new role in administration. She earned her Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility and Ed.D. in 2021 and is currently the Assistant Superintendent.
Roberta Kiefer is the manager for UPMC BMS Grounds. Her teams cover the Presby/Oakland, Shadyside, and Mercy campuses as well as many corporate properties. She has worked for UPMC for 16 years and has a background in landscape design and installation. She has participated in many community partnerships and facilitated the design and install of therapy gardens throughout her coverage area.
