He was my biggest influence too. If only I could be braver.. I never felt confident enough to pull any of his tricks so that part of me was left undeveloped. I felt if one couldn’t do it justice then it shouldn’t be done. That’s how much I respected his thinking. It is as good as it will ever be. He is also a performer I would hire over anyone else bc of the respect he brings (in more ways than one). Btw Harry Lorayne passed away April this year. A legend and an icon left us this year. In that “old school” group, I think Richard turner and Steve fearson are the last ones remaining. These are all megastars and they practice 8-10 hours daily. They have a lot of discipline.

@@johnan8509 I saw myself in your comment. Like you, I don't dare to perform one of Mr Ortiz's masterful routines to a real audience because I'm too afraid of failing and showing disrespect to this artist whom I admire greatly. That's why magicians should help each other. The problem is that there is no magic circle/club in my town. However, despite the distance and language barrier, I'm willing to exchange my contact information, if you'd like, to motivate each other to work on some of Ortiz's routines. Our challenge could be to perform at least one of them in front of our friends/family in the coming months. What do you think ?

Ironically they would never do so. They love the challenge but their high moral fiber prevents them. Money is for the limited. They did it for the greatest reward in life - for love of the art. It’s the legacy, not the materialism. And that’s how each person should live to the fullest.

He is literally the real deal when it comes to riffle stacking. He practices without looking down at the cards. It’s how he learned it. If he looks at the cards while doing it, he messes up. He covered this in one of his lectures. It’s just amazing how have learned such a difficult and rare skill like that without looking (the way everyone I’ve ever heard recommend as well).

    It’s 2022 and I met Darwin at a small college in west Texas-in 1984!
The line about dealing honestly because he shuffled crookedly…in fact his whole show here was basically the same. I got to sit at the table with him and watch up close.

He is the best at handling brand new just opened cards that I’ve ever seen. As far as I know he pretty much does it every performance. I love the fact that a lot of his repertoire consists of non-selection routines.

I have a performance of him on Leeza show on VHS. Trying to figure out how to salvage it bc it’s over 20 years old. I always wanted to do what he does. Spent some serious time. But it really needs lifelong dedication.. like 5000 hours (standard professional hours). I stopped at 3000 hours.. it requires too much work and it just didn’t get reliable enough (stacking). I would always get it 90% of the time but never sure fire method. One card off just ruins the performance. I decided I wasn’t good enough. Hard to accept after wasting my youth. If I get chance I’ll try to get it up.

He’s also the kind of performer I’m comfortable hiring because he’s professional, funny, and charismatic. I know some ppl find his personality not so charismatic but maybe it depends on ppl upbringing. I dont have to worry about being insulted. I can think of other technically better ppl but what I think he possesses are technicalities that are performance-theater. He invest in sleights that delivers on his well-constructed routines and acts. Its very performance-focused that gives maximum impact. I dont know how to explain it any better but I’ve seen many performers and what makes him different is having the focus on the magic and using the right tools to get it. Its just well thought out.

@@superchef78 I’ve been out but Richard Turner comes to mind. Technically better.. but I didn’t say better performer. I love these megastars (all) but Darwin Ortiz, on the national scale, what makes him unique is his ratio of presentation to technicality. Easy to be misguided into move monkey but D.O. knows his blueprint is my comment.

Jason explains that his persona is all an act and is not his real personality. To me it is a damn stupid persona to deliberately make people dislike you! And I certainly dislike him when he commented on one of my viral videos (26 million views) that it was all done with a $4 svengali deck. Of course he isn't good enough to know how to work a svengali deck in the first place. Furthermore his mentor Darwin Ortiz advised strongly never to challenge your audience yet Jason does it all the time. He has a lot to learn....................
