Richard Turner - The Cheat (Perfomance)

  • Richard Turner has achieved legendary status in the world of card magicians. However, Richard Turner is not a magician nor does he claim to be one-he demonstrates card cheating. Of course, all of this is made even more impressive given that Mr. Turner is blind. The bio-segment advertises his show as well as his motivational speaking. When one weighs his skills and accomplishments with his handicap, it's easy to see how Mr. Turner would make a most inspirational speaker.

    He was in denial, not accepting that he is almost blind and hated the word "blind" - so he is faking that he can see. On this video his vision is blocked by huge pitch black circles in the middle - the size of your palm. He only sees extremely blurry shapes on the side of his eyes. Most of the time he is imagining things by sound, such as people. When he lost his vision completely a couple years later, he wasn't even aware of it for about 1 year, as he was still imagining what he thought was there. Watch the documentary "Dealt".

He worked at Fiesta Texas here in San Antonio for years. I literally looked this man dead in the eyes while speaking to him and no idea that he was blind. If only I had known who, and how amazing this man was back then.

  • @billypph.d4434
    @billypph.d4434 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    He doesn't say he is blind here and his gestures makes it seem as if he isn't blind but he did stage acting and a mentor of his taught him to speak to other actors as if he was sighted. An absolute incredible man makes me embarrassed for all my 'i do it later" crap.

    • @Steely_Fran
      @Steely_Fran ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For a while he didn't talk about being blind and didn't want to be introduced as being blind. He said that his blindness was irrelevant because it's never prevented him from doing anything he's wanted to do. You're right about him acting like he could see. I saw an interview where he talked about how he's been in situations where if people knew he was blind, they would know it was him. One of those times was when a card counter was being filmed playing poker for a TV show. From what I gathered, the card counter was bragging about how he was going to win. So the casino decided to bring Richard in to deal and didn't tell anybody. He said that he had to act like he could see so he wouldn't tip anyone off. They filmed for 2 hours and Richard didn't deal the card counter a single winning hand.

    I remember hearing at one point Richard could read a card by feeling the ink on it's face. He's estimated to have practiced each particular card skill over 60 million times over his lifetime. Yeah, he's good.

    • @PaulsPubAndBrew
      @PaulsPubAndBrew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's a common misconception. He has superhuman touch. But he can't feel what a card is by touching the face. Nor can he sense the weight of the card based on the ink on it. When he opens a new pack of cards he rubs the edges of the deck in a certain way that make microscopic impressions across the deck. Because the deck is in new deck order at the time he did this he can feel the edges of the cards later to know what cards are what. He can't do this for all 52 cards. He might know the kings or the aces, ETC.

      @@khosen6592 I explained that in my comment. He opens the deck which is in a new deck order, and he rubs the side of the deck very carefully to make invisible markings on the sides of the cards that he can feel with his crazy touching ability. Then when the cards are shuffled he can feel the sides of the cards to have an idea what they are. He doesn't do it for all 52 cards, just the cards he wants to find later for his show.

    • @khosen6592
      @khosen6592 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more like this. It's easier for him since he's blind than it would be for you. When you're blind, your brain will use the resources normally used for sight for something else. Usually the other senses get strengthened. Don't get me wrong though, accomplishing something like this takes immense effort and practise, but it would be easier for a blind person to accomplish than a normal person with all senses intact.

    this guy is so ridiculous. one handed second deals, one handed false riffle shuffles, dealing from the center of the deck, finding 4 cards BEING BLIND from the middle of the deck and shuffle them into the correct positions in matter of seconds HOLY SHIT. this guy is the legit god of card handling, never have i ever seen anything like this before

      Yes, is really easy if you know any techniques of handling, you can blind it in youtube

      It's not false per se, it's just reversed. You can tell his false riffles (push-through) from his genuine ones by whether he does a cut immediately after, and this applies to his one-handed too. He riffles the cards but leaves them up-jogged and then simply pulls them out in a cut.

      A3roboy In my eyes that is a false riffle shuffle, Most of the false riffle shuffles are don by up/sidde jog the cards and than pul them out but I have nevver seen it done whit a one handed riffle shuffle and then a one handed cut

    at 10:31-10:33 leaves me questionable...I love this man, watched almost every video on TH-cam showing his acts, interviews, etc. Now he claims to be completely blind. At the time frame I listed at the beginning, when he reached for the cards and she threw her hands up, his hand hesitated trying to grab them, and waited until she was done. Any explanation for that?

    • @zapdite9410
      @zapdite9410 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      explanation to what? why he hesitated?

    • @thomas3816
      @thomas3816 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah as if he saw her waving her hand around when he went to grab the cards, he stopped cause she was going around. Was he completely blind at this point in his life?

      no he wasnt completely blind, he was legally blind but could still see things as if the wre shadows

    Insane how when he gives you the deck to shuffle he is putting all of his trust in you bc you can kill the show very easily. When he takes the cards back from her at the end is his way of saying you’re fucking up my cards.
