A look at Darwin Ortiz' "Jumping Gemini" (and a new form of 'tutorial' *please chime in)

  • I've made a quick pivot from my original intentions of teaching beginner magic (*focused on lessons from the Mark Wilson Course in Magic.) Note that, for the time being, I stand by the basic lessons I offered and I'll be leaving them up for beginners to peruse.
    And moving forward, the 'secret exposure' will (mostly) stop.
    I would still like to guide the interested students in the right direction and so, I'll be offering lessons like the one here. I'll discuss the origins of a routine, it's printed resource(s) and I'll mention some of the techniques to give a student an idea of what is required.
    I could write for hours on this topic, but instead of doing so, I'd rather hear your commentary. Please drop thoughts, questions, etc in the comments. I'm listening & I'm trying to do right by everyone.
    I love magic. I don't want anyone upset about what I'm doing (I know I will never please everyone) & so, I think the 'exposure' issue deserves attention...
    anyhoo, that's the scoop for now... see ya in the comments

    I've never seen a magician complain when something was "exposed" to them to be able to learn an effect. - I have had the experience of "exposing" how something was done and then fooling them with the same technique that I had just "exposed". - - The next generation of magicians are going to have to learn from somewhere. Since GOOD magic shops have been disappearing, on line seems to be the place to learn. - Doug, you have been VERY good about pointing out the BOOKs you've learned from. - It is also my opinion that anybody who is not truly interested in LEARNING to perform an effect, that you are teaching, will get bored with the lesson in short order and would probably not grasp the "secrets" you are putting out. = Think about how many magic books that when you first look at them make absolutely no sense to anybody, that hasn't taken the time for real study. = I've sold THOUSANDS of svengali decks and exposed them in EVERY demo. And I can STILL fool and amaze people with a svengali deck. (I can even fool people who have actually bought a deck) - It is my impression that many magicians get so hung up with the idea of exposure of "HOW" something is done , that they are unable to focus on the elements that go along with the technique, that produce the magic. - Doug, you've fooled me on many occasions with stuff I was familiar with. The fact that I was "exposed" to how it worked, did not remove the magic from the experience. - You've been doing a great service to the magic community and I hope you will continue to do so.

    Now, this is exactly how it should be done! You are respecting the art of magic, respecting the secrets and respecting the community.
    Too many cheap shots for getting likes by disrespectful magicians on TH-cam is killing the art.
    I’m all for enticing new blood into the magic scene, we all have to start somewhere right?
    Showing people where to find the secrets rather than just exposing them for the world to see is a much more rewarding option, both for the person seeking and the community itself!
    I salute you Doug!
    I’m now going to grab my treasured, signed, Darwin Ortiz book and spend a few hours re-learning some old favourite routines.
    You’ve inspired me (a seasoned magician) and hopefully you’ll inspire beginners to seek out information rather than just be spoon fed the secrets!

    Hey Doug one thing I would like to say is that there are already tutorials for jumping Gemini on TH-cam and if you aren't going to go in depth and explain the trick then the magicians that watch you won't stay for long on your channel because they know they can get a real tutorial elsewhere. Loved your old tutorials I hope you start those again! Whatever you do i will always be a part of your channel and will try to like and share every video and tune in for the live streams!

    So as a fan of legerdemain and card sleights, I have found your instructions, tutorials, and book recommendations to be top notch. There are so many "here's how you do this" out there, such as the any time thing you mentioned once. With that I think the difference is that it has under 100 likes, but the channel had over 60k subs. You did t reveal that, but it's there. What you teach is how to teach your (our?) selves through books and learning, and the history etc. Sure you taught a couple of things but there are hundreds if not thousands of things sub rosa you've never displayed, let alone taught or discussed. And I applaud your use of sleight as opposed to... non sleight. That's why I watch Doug the most, and look forward to his videos (though I was late today). The only downside is his book recommendations are not cheap unless I wand ripped PDFs. Hardbounds aren't easy to come by. Now, something else to hunt for lol.

      Yup, For the same reasons I don’t expose (at all) on TikTok, I definitely tread with care into the TH-cam side of the pond... the #shorts platform gave me a larger audience than I originally expected (within a month or two) and so I here I am re evaluating the work
      I’ll figure it out

      @@DougConn so here's the the thing, if you do a live with randoms from around the world, it's an expose. I'd suggest if it's a training that it's a live with sign up of people who are literally interested in learning, and the live isn't reposted permanently. Maybe? Dunno, not a YT expert.

    Well there is always patreon or youtube memberships. You can add a paywall and upload tutorials behind it and see if that is a good compromise. You can encourage people to purchase the Mark Wilson book so they can follow a long. Or you can style your video like this one and perform tricks and then open up dialogue with perspective magicians and have them work out how they think it works.
    I can understand the mystery of keeping magic isolated but jut like all things this to has evolved with the internet. People are constantly created new methods and props and only by building on what came before can we see this type of growth. If Doug Conn does a history lesson and tutorial once a week thats 52 tutorials, or in some case a variation on the same trick, then there will be a very small portion of the world that now have seen this. And we will have another great magician teaching us the right way instead by giving us the inspiration and knowledge of not only how to do something but also why. This allows us to figure out the next step. Anywho there is my 4 cents. I love the videos and will be here as soon as TH-cam decides to tell me you have a new one. Thank you!! Stay Awesome!!

    Im now like 1year down the rabbithole of magic and i dont need you to "expose" moves to enjoy this format. the books and names you talk about are of much more value for me ;+). Thanks!
    In my opninon there are tons of (bad) exposures about every move out now in the internet.
    people who are out to find exposure will find something. So if you dont teach, the art of deception trade a quality teacher for a crappy one :-/.
    But sticking to your friends is moreoftenthannot the best choice.

    In the beginning a teacher taught a pupil. I'd prefer it was still that way, but it's not. That's ridiculous. Then books came along and you really had to want to learn cause first you had to get the book and then you had to read it and apply the knowledge and thems some tough steps. I'd prefer it was still that way, but it's not. That's ridiculous. Then VHS came along and then DVD. Then the internet to spread the aforementioned like a virus.

    I think the tutorials are fine. If people don't see it from you, they will see it elsewhere. I'm a big Ed Marlo fan and even considered demonstrating some of his moves or tricks on TH-cam because you CAN'T EVEN FIND SOMEONE DEMOSTRATING THEM! And I just want to see what the trick/move just looks like. This type of video is also important, just to show what is even out there.
    When doing tutorials, I think that people would benefit from your vast experience. Maybe things that you included or just left out of a trick. I know that from doing a move for so long, you understand it a lot more, in which others could benefit from. My two cents.

    • @DougConn
      @DougConn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And that speaks another option: Only upload (original) content that I have significantly changed or improved, etc. Unfortunately, this leaves out the novice/ beginner audience which is the crowd that needs me the most. Ideally I could do both... we'll see... I've heard mostly positives so far... I'm waiting for someone from the other camp to voice some opinions

  • @michael_v7
    @michael_v7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally think there's nothing wrong with teaching the basics techniques and effects with good references. So any genuinely interested beginner has a good place to start and know where to go if he's really ethusiastic. Not everyone might have access to expert magicians or magic clubs around to learn from.
    I mean who knows may be this might be the first learning experience for another Vernon or Marlo who otherwise might have turned to other equally ignorant TH-cam "magicians".
    It's important for magic to have good knowledgeable teacher like yourself on TH-cam.
    I don't think more people learning magic is a problem ( in fact I think it's good for the craft ), the problem is when more people learn bad magic and think that's what magic is all about.

    • @DougConn
      @DougConn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is kind of been my mindset: beginners could benefit from my experience (& no matter what I i do, people are going to learn on TH-cam... perhaps from lesser teachers) I think I have value to offer students
