2021 Update -- Solar power produced >10% of the world's electricity, compared to the 1-2% estimates that are given in this talk for 2020.

I Love his style when he refer to other scientific concepts seems new and hard for a person to cover at all. Thanks is a small word for MIT and this great teacher.

54:12 sooooooooo satisfying that he perfectly aligned his pointing with the line of solar panels.

Interesting first lecture and I'm excited to view the rest. After completing the course I hope to experiment with home based solar to electricity conversion systems. Perhaps I can even build a mini solar to heat energy steam producing system!

Who is this guy? How many languages does he speak fluently? What an amazing lecturer. I wish I had professors like this when I was in school. I'm absolutely engaged and interested to watch the rest. I wish I was in his course.

I HAVE HAD IDEAS FOR DECADES AND ON THIS TOPIC I HAVE A FEW. IF 50 YEARS AGO EACH SOLAR CELL WAS THE SIZE OF A SMALL CAR, WE HAVE HAD THE TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE THEM GREATLY. AS THOMAS EDISON SAID OF HIS 1ST LIGHT BULB"IF IT CAN RUN FOR 7 HOURS, IT CAN RUN FOR 700( PARAPHRASING) BUT THE IDEA IN MY HEAD IS THIS SAME IDEA. IF WE CAN REDUCE THEM DOWN TO THIS SIZE( WHICH IS TOTALLY WAY TOO LARGE) THEN WE CAN MAKE THEM POSTAGE STAMP SIZED WITH THE POWER TO RUN A SMALL RADIO 24/7. ANOTHER IDEA I HAVE ON THIS IS TO MAGNIFY THE LENS OF GLASS TO CONCENTRATE A FOCUSED BEAM ONTO THAT CELL INCREASING IT'S POWER. THE LAST ONE IS TO USE NIGHT VISION TECHNOLOGY AS EVEN IN TOTAL DARKNESS WE CAN SEE PLAINLY BUT IN DAYLIGHT THOSE CELL COULD BE (PERHAPS) 100 X MORE POWERFUL...JUST A THOUGHT!!

Nice lecture. Those days, it becomes more and more clear that photovoltaic technology is going to reshape our life by reducing carbon emission and pollution. Meanwhile, as the cost of electricity from solar cells decrease dramatically, it will become an affordable way to make the developing community to get access to electricity.

How does the price of solar graph take into account the entire lifetime production of electricity by the solar power?

I guess if the fosil fuel industry is going to deny climate change it only makes sense that the alternative energy proponents would just as vehemently argue for climate change. makes perfect sense.
