Cold weather at Higashiyama Zoo.
The gorillas were relaxing indoors after breakfast when Annie, Shabani's daughter, was trapped in the lift shaft.
Shabani and the others were impatient at the sudden incident, but they ran outside to return to the basement from another lift shaft.
Nene, an elderly female gorilla, also ran outside.
A short time later, Nene and Ai returned from outside to their usual room. It seems that they did not return to the basement from the other lift shaft.
A few moments later, the lift shaft door in the usual room opened and Kiyomasa, Annie, and Shabani came up from the basement.
Annie seemed to be safe.
After that, Shabani and her family relaxed in their usual room until lunch was ready.
Annie (age 9) is a girl born to Shabani and Ai, but she was artificially nursed for about a year because Ai abandoned her soon after birth.
When Annie returned to the herd, it is said that neither Shabani nor Ai recognized Annie as their own child, but welcomed her as a member of the herd.
However, when Annie is in trouble, as she is this time, Shabani in particular tries desperately to protect her.
This time, both Ai and Kiyomasa were desperately trying to help Annie. Also, Nene, who usually does not get along with Annie, was worried about Annie and ran outside.
Looking at Shabani and his family, I think it is more fitting to describe them as Shabani's family rather than a herd of gorillas.

Those up/down doors are sooo scary. After I read about a baby gorilla who was killed due to this type of door, these doors became a horror to watch go down. Love this Family.
Strange that the door keeps closing. What a beautiful display of family dynamics, though, as they all rush off to the other entrance to "save" Annie! What wonderful creatures. I also couldn't help but notice that Nene looks to be having much more difficulty getting around, poor old girl.
Well she can still climb up high so hopefully that is a good sign. I know her slowly getting around is the issue these days, but she still is capable of sprinting, usually at Shabani or Annie.
At 51, she's probably the oldest gorilla in Japan. (There's only 20 I believe)
Yes, Nene is old for a captive gorilla. Arthritis, I think?

I'm convienced that Ai knows Annie is her daughter. She ’ was so young after giving birth twice. Even Nene was concerned about Annie. Kyomassa trying to push door up…heroic big brother . Shabani , a wonderful Silverback. Amazing. Thanks for rhis video!!!

I didn't know Ai gave Birth 2 times and I have been watching them for years , do you have videos of this..?
I have no videos saved . But it was mentioned in comments. A few years ago. Shabani and Ai had a child that died soon after birth. Then Annie was born. Perhaps someone in the community can give more details .

Was just a child herself and her inability to nurture a baby is. Not surprising.
I wonder if the door is malfunctioning, as it keeps closing/trying to close. I hope a hand of the gorillas won’t be injured if it got caught under the door. At least there was another way to get to Annie in the basement.

I am glad to see Annie come up finally 8:34. 9:16 I think the door has a slight malfunction. 10:10 Dad Shabani wants Ai and Annie to come out of the lift shaft. 11:11 It was heartwarming to see Ai in the lift shaft with daughter Annie protecting her, and the tight family bond overall. I suspect Ai knows Annie is her daughter. She was just rather young when she had Annie, and at the time knew very little about mothering a child.
I think she knows now as well. Maybe she didn’t when she was introduced to her before the others, but I think she does now.

10:10 it's moments like this that make me think Ai knowns Annie is her child. At Annie's age most gorillas who aren't related would not engage with the other gorillas much who aren't related to them.

7:19 I wonder why Shabani did his display right after the door closed, and THEN went to search for Annie. I wonder if he does that to get amped up.
He was upset. It's a natural reaction for them to display when irritated, frightened, or angry, etc.
@@pamcunningham9608 I mostly see that particular display when they are happy. When they are just in the mood to display. They also always seem energetic when using it. Which makes me suspect it's about being excited and making yourself excited, positively or negatively.
@@evo2542 Yeah, it's a particularly Shabani gesture, pretty much, although it's been adopted by his whole family as well. I suspect you're right about it being kind of a "getting amped up" kind of thing, since Shabani usually seems to do it when he's feeling playful.
Those doors scare me. I’ve seen them close and little Kintaro run under. A small opening or what just happened with Annie. They need a monitor like an elevator that draws back automatically if it touches something.

I am not sure why the female gorilla is afraid of Shabani. He seems to be in general a very benevolent and kind leader. Sure he "tapped" her in the video we see but it wasn't an aggressive thing. It seemed really playful.
I think Shabani likes to pick on Nene a lot.

Why are they kept in such a tiny enclosure?
Couple questions these are dim watching for a while. One, is there something different with Nini. She has the strangest looking face. It looks scary. Doesn't resemble any of the other ones. And she's always sitting there with her jaw. Hanging open it just doesn't look the same. Can you usually she's by herself or hiding. And it seems that Shabani doesn't like her I'll be nice. If anybody knows why I love to understand..
