Evangelical pastor perfectly refutes MAGA Christianity!

  • During a discussion with Pastor David Johnson about Tim Alberta's book The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, I asked him how Christian leaders can push back on the constant messages their listeners are hearing that link the MAGA movement to Christianity.
His answer: stick to the biblical text. His example turned into an epic rant that got right to the heart of the issue. Every Christian should hear this message.

To the church of my youth,
What the hell did you expect me to do?
You told me to love my neighbors, to model the life of Jesus. To be kind and considerate, and to stand up for the bullied.
You told me to love people, consider others as more important than myself.
You taught me to sing "red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight."
We sang it together, pressing the volume pedal and leaning our hearts into the chorus. You said that “He loved all the children of the world”.
You told me to love my enemies, to even do good to those who wish for bad things. You told me to never "hate" anyone and to always find ways to encourage people.
You told me it's better to give than receive, to be last instead of first. To help the poor, the widow, the stranger at the gate.
You told me that Jesus looks at what I do for the least-of-these as the true depth of my faith. You told me to focus on my own sin and not to judge. You told me to be accepting and forgiving.
    So I paid attention.
    I took in every lesson.
And I did what you told me.
But now, you call me a libtard. A queer-lover. You call me "woke." A backslider.
You call me a heretic. You make fun of my heart. You mock the people I’m trying to help.
You say I’m a child of the devil.
You call me soft. A snowflake. A socialist. You shun the very people you told me to help.
What the hell did you expect me to do?
I thought you were serious, but apparently not.
You hate nearly all the people I love. You stand against nearly all the things I stand for. I'm trying to see a way forward, but it's hard when I survey all the hurt, harm, and darkness that comes in the wake of your beliefs and presence.
What the hell did you expect me to do?
I believed it all the way.
I'm still believing it all the way.
Which leaves me wondering, what happened to you?

The type of Christians that believe in love are still out there. Look to denominations like Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Lutheran (ELCA Lutheran, NOT Missouri Synod Lutheran). All of those denominations are very progressive overall, though of course that doesn't necessarily mean every church in those denominations is progressive, especially in a more conservative area.

@@Trip_Fontaine I agree there are some (non-fundamentalist) churches out there that are more progressive and accepting of all people. But, also as you said, there are progressive denominations out there that are in conservative areas that are not progressive. I grew up in the United Church of Christ (UCC), which was the first mainline denomination to ordain an openly gay person into the ministry, way back in 1972. However, the UCC church I grew up in is in a very small community in Missouri and now 50 years later are still not at all progressive.

That's absolutely correct. The first bricks for this road to perdition were laid down in the early 1980s. To his supreme credit Billy Graham recognized it (perhaps partially due to the fact that Richard Nixon abused their relationship and Graham was made wiser by the experience), and began to call out the marriage between the church and right leaning politics. (Read his quotes from Parade Magazine in February 1981). It is unfortunate that although he recognized the problem, he didn't school his son on it, who is a 100% dyed-in-the-wool MAGA nut. These philosophies are NOT compatible. (Mark 7:6-7, Matthew 22:37-38, Matthew 6:24, Colossians 3:5). Indeed, if you go far enough into MAGA land thinking, you're not even a Christian any more, really.
Every man and woman is going to be forced to choose. Is your lord Jesus, or is your lord some politician? There is no culture warfare issue that is worth losing your soul over. I fear far too many have already been lost because they were seduced by a lust for control and retribution. That option was never open to you. Jesus made it clear how he expected evangelism to work: Matthew 10:16. You cannot really evangelize if you have hate in your heart for your fellow man.

What evangelicals clearly omit when claiming that sinners need to be forgiven since we're all sinners, thus giving Trump a free pass for his crimes and sins, is that for divine forgiveness the sinner needs to feel sincere remorse (for each of his sins, not for getting caught for those) and be devoted to repent and make ammends for the rest of his life while never sinning again. I was taught that the Lord truly wants to forgive us all, but that He'd still won't without remorse and repentance.
Trump has no morals, so feels no guilt, no regrets (except regarding outcomes), no remorse, no need to repent and make amends and definitely no intention to never commit any sins again.

I cannot believe true evangelicals'd really believe that faith alone can be enough to have Christ wash away our sins on Judgenment Day. Not without sincere remorse and a lifetime of atonement. Redemption still has to be earned.
As I was taught, faith alone cannot is not and must not be enough. Even just being a good person wouldn't be enough. It has to be (at least) both. Which is preciaely why evangelicals are always on their evangelical mission: saving good persons by having them embrace christianity. Trying to be a good christian person, I experienced as hard work, every day. Because we have to atone for our sins for the rest of our lives. Jesus Christ died to wash away from our shoulders the burden of the sins from our forefathers, making us accountable only for our own sins, but accountable we remain, still continuously risking eternal damnation instead of eternal bliss.

Trump had a brother Robert who was Fred Trump's favorite. Robert wanted to be an airline pilot, which he became TWA. Fred Trump tormented the man for his chosen profession, Robert became an alcoholic, and died in his early 40s.
Robert had a son, and a daughter Mary, after the passing of Robert, Donald tried to get Mary to sign her share of the family money to him, Mary was 10 years old. Mary's brother suffers from cerebral palsy, while running for president in 2016, Trump mocked a reporter suffering from the same condition (remember?) it was disgusting.
The source for this information is "The Making of Donald Trump" by David Cay Johnston Pulitzer prize winning investigative reporter. The book can be found second hand very inexpensively on line, I strongly recommend it. Trump a highly litigious guy, has never challenged Cay Johnston 's information.

What Pastor Dave Johnson says here is absolutely the best answer to the question of, "How can Christians support Donald Trump?" They're choosing Barabbas! The Jews in Jerusalem wanted a strong figure to take on the Romans, but what they got was a meek pious man riding a donkey preaching peace, so they liberated a brute instead. What an insightful take on Palm Sunday, the crucifixion, and their parallels in current events and politics.

I’m a non-believer, but I found this analysis refreshing. My thoughts aren’t meant as criticism, just critique. As an outsider, I wish that people of faith would focus more on showing me how to act rather than telling me how to act. So much current dialogue is about making laws to limit my freedom, instead of inspiring me to use my freedom for good. What I’m surrounded by daily is a barrage of forceful attempts to make me see myself as wrong, so that I’ll be open to revelation. That approach only drives people further away, because it comes off as looking down on a non-believer, rather than listening to them and knowing them. It is not inviting or welcoming. If the biblical god is real, then it seems to me that he sent his son to demonstrate to us how to succeed. The lesson in this story is that choosing Barabbas was the wrong path, and Jesus was literally showing them how to succeed peacefully. That god does not need “USA” to prevail, he just needs us all to simply be good. I don’t think he wants an American caliphate. What I’ve learned over time, though, is that real leadership succeeds by deeds, not speeches. Thank you, gentlemen. I would happily share a beer or iced tea with you any day. I cannot conjure wine, but I’ll share the bottle I have :)

Thank Jerry Falwell and the moral majority for that. Falwell got pissed that the government didn’t support his segregationist Liberty University. Look at what his kid did in using Liberty University money for real estate scams. Christians were then used to convert Dixiecrats into Republican as part of Nixons southern strategy based on four issues: anti abortion, anti gay rights, no taxes, and small government. The right wing echo chamber pushed this propaganda for decades after. And it worked. The more moderate and liberal churches got shouted down in true Calvinist tradition until the only voices heard were those of the right.
Frank Shaeffer called Falwell the angriest man he ever met, and rejected most leaders of the fundamentalist right especially Robertson, as con men. He would know, he knew them all as the son of Francis Shaeffer. He rejected that whole movement as he grew up and found out who the players were. He does pod casts on this.
As late as 1968, abortion was not a big deal in the evangelical church as 50 evangelical groups got together and said there are times when abortion is appropriate. Read letters written by Billy Graham in his paper Christianity today and the head of the SBC before it got highjacked by the fundamentalist right.
Now, thanks to Falwell and his group, and the Republican MAGA groups, the real Christian msg of Gods love has been lost in the American church and the perception of the church is sinking down. No matter who wins, especially if Trump wins and agenda 2025 succeeds, the outcome will be similar to Europe a hundred years ago, our allies will abandon us if we abandon them and get out of NATO, and Christianity will be as dead as it is in Europe after WW 2.

I think a disturbingly high percentage of people in this country have their religion and their politics so jumbled up that they've lost all track of where one stops and the other begins, as is now perfectly symbolized by the God Bless America Bible that Trump is selling, with the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, etc., included as if it's part of scripture.

Great analogy--choosing Barrabas over Christ! I understand that Evangelicals are saying that the meekness of Christ is passe' for our day. What they want is "somone with balls".
Trump has become an idol to the Evangelical community. They are evangelizing for Trump--not for Christ.
And, incidentally, rebuilding the third temple so Christ can come--that's not biblical. Christ said, "This gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world as a witness unto all nations. And then shall the end come!" He also said His Kingdom "is not of this world". The gospel of trump is not the gospel we should be advocating. We're to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and His love! That is our commission--not to manipulate government so a third temple gets built, so Jesus can come. And certainly not to coerce, or even force, everyone to subscribe to Christian values. (That's the way of the Inquisition of the Catholic church during the dark ages--not God's way).
One correction--there weren't synagogues during David's reign. Not until Judah was exiled to Babylon & the temple was destroyed. That's when synagogues were first built in Babylon as places of worship in lieu of the temple.

I think God used trump to divide!
“I did not come to bring peace but a sword.”
Not to divide a nation but to separate His own from that which is not.
Pastor Dave said to pastors “you guys, we need to stick with the text!”
    That’s the remedy.
When I tell people that the word of God is not like Silly Putty or Mister Potato Head,
they seem to not like it.
They think it’s ok to mold their teaching or preaching into anything they’d like.
The real hard sermons are coming though!
Pastor Dave kinda touched on it.
Many will fall away because of the “hard saying.”
    Like they did with Jesus.
And that’s the whole Americanism vs biblical Christianity sermon.
    That’s gonna sting.
It’s the allegiance of Americanism over Christ that’s causing pastors and lay people to fail.
There are people we call Christians who never were.
    They’re simply Americans.

Great video. You're a 100% correct regarding Jesus riding in on the colt. It was a humble entrance that was not of a political "strong man." And I would add, this is one of the things that angered and disappointed Judas. Why? He was a Judean and didn't understand many of the things Jesus said and did. Why? Jesus was a Galilean who was Jewish by faith and used different figures of speech and wasn't politically minded in the way Judeans expected the Messiah to be. Granted, everyone was thinking of a political Messiah king as was taught would be the case. But Jesus was a Spiritual Messiah who thought on a universal level that was all-inclusive. None of Jesus followers understood this until after he died.
The modern MAGA fundamentalists definitely picked a modern day Barabbas.

Man! What a powerful examination of both MAGA force/hate and Jesus’ approach with love. They, the Israelites, chose hate, rather than love, to accomplish what they thought was important. Both what Trump (MAGA) wants and how they want to achieve it, goes against what we think of as Christianity.

Countries have their national churches and its a part of their identity. People go to church, catholic or orthodox or protestant and go through the motions but they are not real believers. It just something they do. And so it is in America, except "evangelicalism" is their national religion. Religion then serves not as the Kingdom of God but as a national thing that establishes your nationalism. One of distinguishing aspects of American religion is dispensationalism which has direct impact on US middle east policy. It is used for wars.

What struck me by the Barabbas scene is the fact that many Jews in the Second Temple period likely would pray the Shema Israel in the morning when they wake and in the evening before bed, which to my understanding is reinforcing through their prayers that the God of Abraham is the One God AND is King--not just over Israel, but the world. I personally think these practices contributed to their recalcitrance to ANY assimilation into Rome or any other power (I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest this). What I find most devastating about the Barabbas scene is that it effectively ends with Jesus' fellow Jews, maybe some of whom have been praying/acknowledging the God of Abraham as King then declare we have no "King but Caesar." I fear many of my evangelical brethren have adopted a similar view now--they have no king but Trump.

  • @Kra-ri6fd

I voted for Trump last time but then I started paying attention and, as a Christian, I started realizing people are worshiping him. I can no longer vote for Trump. I also noticed that the messiah the Jewish people were looking for was one who would vanquished them from Roman rule. They didn't recognize the messiah for who he is. Now we (well some) know the messiah but want, instead, a messiah that will "save " our worldly comforts. The Bible says if the end times to fear not for these things must come to pass and to LOOK UP in these times. I noticed that Maga followers are ruled by fear of losing this country and worldly goods. Instead of looking up and understanding that these things must come to pass, they give in to this fear, fight what is to come, and keep their eyes on worldly affairs. We can not serve two God's. Either we will love the one and hate the other. I've also noticed that those who follow Maga rarely truly know Biblical prophecy or most of the Bible as it is. They, instead, want to hear words of comfort from false prophets and false apostles. Words that make them "feel the spirit moving". If they don't feel things then the spirit isn't moving.... it's all run on human emotions and fears. Politicians know how to manipulate those things and control people. As much as I try to tell my friends, family, and church members this, it goes in one ear and out the other at bedtime. At worse, it truly makes them angry at me! I'm only telling them what the word of God says about listening to false prophets...

This is deep! I have realized that the reason Jesus in the Lamb of God, gentle and vulnerable, kind, and forgiving, meek and lowly, IS THAT THE FATHER IS ALSO A LAMB! Does that shock you? It shouldn’t. Jesus did say “He who sees me sees the Father.” BOTH are lamb-like, .kind and gentle, loving and forgiving, approachable, taking no offense. Recently, a doe was hit by a car in front of our house. Two days later, a VERY young faun stumbled into our back yard, and gently walked up to my wife, who was kneeling down on one knee, speaking quietly to the faun, ALLOWING MY WIFE TO PET IT ON THE HEAD. It purred a soft cry or two, went back into the woods, and two days later died from lack of its mother’s milk. THAT GENTLENESS, FROM BOTH MY WIFE AND THE FAUN, IS THE WAY OUR FATHER IS! He is gentle, trusting, vulnerable, almost naive, kind, and sweet. If you want a KING like Caesar, King David, or their ilk, Jesus and our Father are not your cup of tea…..and They will not change their stripes to suite you, but you might change your thoughts to suite Them. Lambs hang with lambs.
