Thank you so much for this, especially enjoyed the last few minutes with you playing and the tour of Don's. I was there in 2011. I flew out to LA from PA, for my daughter's orientation at USC. I insisted we go there for dinner and the experience. I asked the waiter if the owner was there. Art came out and sat with us for an hour. He brought us dessert. After dessert he gave us a personal tour around the entire restaurant, and even gave me a few souveniers, including an apron. He was so kind. My 17 year old was amazed how nice he was to us, who were strangers. I told her we were not strangers. In the world of tiki, we were ohana. Aloha Art, Sam's Seafood, and Don the Beachcomers. So happy I went there.

Thank you Spike for that tribute to Don’s. That place will always have a special place in my heart as we had our wedding reception there.

Wow. I never had been to Dons but that tribute at the end of the video was seriously emotional. That should be a historic monument in my opinion. Places like that should be cherished, it’s so sad

Seeing the last scene of you two playing in the dining room near the waterfall instantly took me back to that night. Me and a buddy were many cocktails in and we gave up our booth in the dagger bar, went to see how deep into Don’s we could explore when we came upon you two gents. We just stopped in our tracks to watch you two play. It was phenomenal, sad , emotional and the perfect way to show love for this little bit of paradise. Thanks for that awesome moment

Waxing Max Nostalgic There Matt. How Much Did We Love That Place? Nice footage of you two playing the swan song...
When It Became Don's They Took Out The Two Original Tropical Pay Phone Half Shell Booths from Waikiki In The West Side Corridor. I was always pestering Art to put them back up. Rumor was they were in storage, not thrown out. My Grandfather Lee had also them in the Don The Beachcomber he owned in Corona Del Mar in 61. Loved them. I frequently used the ones at the Tahitian Lani in Ala Wai Harbor Waikiki as my brunch time 'office' in the 80's.

Don Wanderer I remember those in Sam's! I saw one in the basement when it was Don's, and one at the Long Beach swap meet.

So glad you had Justin Scarred on. I've been hooked ever since, watching every episode.
Shingle Stain must look like that because your cocktail matched the color of the Topper.
Gotta see The Hula Girls live.

Awesome tribute to Don’s Spike. 👍 Made me feel somewhat melancholy knowing we won’t ever get back there. Glad the sign went to a good home and hopefully it’ll return someday in a new location. As for the Shingles Stain - I’m not convinced 😜

A quick comment on Vic and the "juice of one lime" etc. A while back, I had a discussion about this w Beachbum, and the conclusion was that people think only Don was worried about people copying his recipes. Vic was too, but whereas Don protected them with secrecy, Vic protected them with *misdirection*. He had discovered a set of personal letters from Vic to close friends and we deduced that he was cagey about the exact quantities of citrus juices, and often played fast and loose with the orgeat. (Like with the syrup, the orgeat was also triple strength, which is why people never get Vic's Scorpion Bowl or Rum Keg right when making them at home.) Great video as always...our lifeline of Tiki during these dark days!

Logged a lot of hours at Don's and have many memories that came up during the montage at the end. I always thought it would have been fun to do a flash mob tiki takeover when the Himalayan Grill moved in. Maybe at a later date. Aloha

I've also enjoyed the Shingle Stain with Plantation Dark. As for Don the Beachcomber, I was fortunate to flight out from Colorado and visit the Tuesday before it closed. I met a new Tiki friend in the Dagger Bar and looked around a bit, but I never got to see the whole place or hear The Hula Girls there. Thanks for the update on the sign.

I’m glad it’s related to roofing tiles because I immediately thought of the shingles virus and sheet stains.
Also, someone should start something similar to the neon sign museum but with tiki bar signs

I’m glad the sign went to a couple of people that really appreciate Don’s and have a plan to maybe reincorporate the sign into a new tiki bar down the road. I had a chance to go to Don’s in 2017 but we didn’t end up going because the party I was with was too tired. So bummed I didn’t get to go at least once before it closed.

    1/2 lime
1 ounce dark Jamaica rum (maybe Appleton 12 Year)
    1/2 ounce St James Rhum
    1/4 ounce Pimento Dram
    Dash of pomegranate syrup (grenadine)
Shake with cracked ice and pour over cracked ice in a 12-ounce Chimney Glass.
Found this old "Shingle Stain" recipe, it`s from the 40`s - sounds a lot more appealing, than the newer one - Cheers

Absolutely loved this episode man! I guess the shingle stain resembles creosote in some strange way?! Love the ideas for the future episodes. I got into Tiki about 3 years ago and during lockdown last year made my own Tiki inspired backyard covered seating area. Nowhere as amazing as the Breezeway but it’s our little hideaway. Maybe in a future episode you could feature viewers own tiki bars and you could give us some tips!!

@@BreezewayCocktailHour That sucks man, I'm sure it will pick up in no time. Just an FYI though, I was watching your channel's Cocktails playlist and there's some politics videos ("Timcast") mixed in and around it. That meant that I got all these suggestions which are way off. Any chance you could make one just about your cocktails as that's what I think most people will be here for (and your music of course!). Cheers and looking forward to the next vid that is premiering today :)

And they do it from light and mellow right for tiki-music up to death metal, and yeah Lace Sensors are one of the best strat-pickups ever. I have a drop'n'gain set in one of my guitars and that stuff is powerful!

Yessir! People have become so thin skinned! I just got hooked into the Tiki vibe during the quarantine so I'm new to this. Still haven't been to a Tiki Bar and it's such a bummer that Don's is no longer. Used to live in LA, down in North SD county now. If they ever need to get rid of it or store it elsewhere, I got room for days!

Very late to the Party (but hey isn't it Fashionable?), you could probably scan and print stuff like the roof if you don't want to ruin it, that way you're also covered if you've got a party and a few people want a Shingle plus theres a souvenir to remember a great night by.

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice “Cocktail” will give you much better cranberry flavor than the 100% juice version, which is mixed with other fruit juices.
Cranberry Juice “Cocktail “ is essentially cranberry-ade-just water, cranberry and sugar.
Also, maybe try adding a half ounce more grenadine to balance out the dryness you mentioned.
    Thanks for the recipe!!
