  • This talk is eye-opening and heart-breaking. Yolanda Schlabach shows the reality of sex-trafficking in the State of Delaware, a terribly unrecognized and under-prosecuted state of affairs. She guides us through the process by which girls are trapped, and eventually lose their independent identity.
Yolanda is a Registered Nurse. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Management from Regent University in 2004 and graduated in 2014 from Liberty University with a Master’s in Human Services & Counseling. Yolanda attended the University of Maryland, earning a Certificate in Working with Survivors of Violence, Trauma and Torture. Yolanda is a member of Delaware’s Human Trafficking Coordinating Council and Co-Chair of the Victim Services Committee.
Yolanda has served as Executive Director of Zoë Ministries, Inc. since 2012, when the organization received 501©3 status. For the past few years, she has spent her time engaged in public awareness and professional education to bring the reality of human trafficking to the forefront in Delaware.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

When I worked in child protection and trafficking, the number one thing actually I was told by clients in hindsight that made a difference (apart from the all logistical stuff), was that I showed I cared, as many abused women and kids have never had that. And particularly, I ask men to never underestimate the power of standing up for a woman, telling her it's wrong what is happening to her, show you care. Most of the kids and women have never heard that from a man, in a healthy way. Can be life changing.

Thank you! Even a lot of my family judged me and stopped talking to me, or just lost touch, when my ex-husband was abusing me. I met a random woman in the park who insisted on being kind to me. If she stopped by or called and wanted to get together, I would say I couldn’t . She asked why. I’d tell her about the chores and errands I had to do before my husband got home. Instead of taking it as a rebuff, she’d ask, “Why can’t he do it himself?“ Not like she was judging me, but because it didn’t sound like a good situation. When I finally told her she should stop coming around so she didn’t get hurt, she’d say, “Good to know. I’ll bring my husband/mom/sister next time.” If I said, “I’m only allowed to bring the kids to their activities today,” she’d say, “I’ll come along.” She told me, nonstop, that I didn’t deserve what he was doing, and we talked and talked. All I had heard for years was how worthless, bad, weak, and undeserving I was. Just hearing something else, from someone else, raised my spirits. I left a few years later, with my friend by my side the whole time…someone who didn’t want anything from me for her friendship. If I was scared, I could come over anytime, or she would. One person can make a difference! Now I work with people with addictions, most of whom tell me they survived abuse and trauma. I don’t tell them to quit. I tell them they deserve a better life and I believe in them. If they’re willing, I am there with support and resources. I understand and accept them til they accept themselves. Kindness is contagious!

As a young boy of about 8 I came across the words "white slavery" in one of my dad's magazines. I had to ask what it meant. This was about 1956 or so. Here we are in 2019 and modern day slavery still exists and thrives. That tells me one thing...America and the entire world do not take the problem seriously. Maybe if some powerful politician's daughters or grand daughters were kidnapped, fed drugs and forced to walk the streets something might get done. Traffickers need to know that there is a high degree of probability that they will face the death penalty for their crimes. Anything less is unacceptable to me.

It's not only in Delaware. This is happening in every state and it's a pandemic because of the internet access. These massage parlors re-open shortly after they are busted because the penalties are minor. This is happening all over the world and one would need a separate agency to strictly enforce the law and put this chaos to an end. The future robots will replace these women and hopefully put these women and pimps out of work.

Whoever has the fortune to associate with the lady is blessed, what a lovely human being. I love how she makes that critical point at 10:30 that seeing ourselves as the victims, acquiescing since we will be forced to do something anyway and might as well save ourselves the beating, then taking on that persona and behaving in line with it, applies to all of us----how we cede control to others.
It does not take much to slip from a partially normal and only slightly traumatized "working life" to one that crosses the line and ends up in a psychologically destroyed human no longer able to extricate themselves from their situation. I guess most of us are lucky to be only in someone's lure or grooming phase... the more self-aware we can be the better, both for ourselves, and in order to empathize with victims of trafficking (or other forced situations), and hopefully even pick up on situations that look suspicious and save someone from their fate.

Some arguments why trafficking need to end include the violation of basic human rights and the devastating impact it has on individuals and communities. Trafficking not only infringes upon basic human rights, but it also perpetuates a cycle of exploitation and vulnerability. Moreover, the devastating impact of trafficking extends beyond individuals and communities, as it undermines social stability and economic development on a global scale.

She knows most of the strays in animal shelters get euthanized, right? With that in mind, is she lamenting the fact that we aren't rounding up and mass executing trafficking victims? I know that's not REALLY how she meant it, but it was deafeningly naive for her to bring animal shelters into this discussion to try to make it seem as though animals are treated better than humans. I, for one, have never driven by the abandoned, pulverized remains of a human infant - but I frequently pass the mangled corpses of cats and dogs rotting away in the hot sun, dismissed as unimportant. That would never happen the other way, and THATS A GOOD THING. People ARE cared for more than animals, as they should be. People who gripe that animals are cared for AT ALL are the absolute worst. Charitable causes don't need to eat each other. Just represent your cause, and do the work you want to do.

It is generational. These women were born and bred in familial trafficking. They do not understand because it happened to them as well. It is a lifestyle that has existed for a very long time. This is why they call it the oldest profession. It is time to punish men who purchase. And parents who sell.

Hospitals, cops and the public need to be educated to the signs and like safe haven laws for babies, we need safe haven locations for trafficking children across the country. And wipe the prostitution laws off the books for victims of trafficking ationwide.

aand... Many of the agencies you mention have people in on either the play or the pay some where some how!.... because the shit floats to the TOP. AT EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS. 300,000 trafficked victims /year you say. ( and just so you know,,,by the way animals are being trafficked by the thousands for sex as well). Good talk!

WOMEN Have the RIGHT to FEEL and BE SAFE
This is a reply post regarding a article on Assault Against Woman:
For what is statistically true, or accurate, and even what is not included statistically, and all other crime such as this is what is ( violence against women) Always unacceptable...
Women have the Right to Feel and be Safe...
No woman..., or person....child...should ever have to experience this kind heinous personal intrusion in their lifetime, this seems to be occurring at least according to news reports more, and all to often.
Actually this activity should be in a stage, or state of Reversal, and NOT Increasing, I am continually upset as well as greatly disturbed in hearing such stories, as I have always have been...
My Heart Always... goes out to any person which have experienced any such similar experience of intrusion, attacks, and, or invasion of their personal well-being... due violence, and or violent behavior,
I will continue to pray for the Safety and Well-Being of Others...

I felt like the man shouting "You can do it!" (when the speaker took a moment of silence for the victims) was unfeeling and a bit heartless. Let a woman take just a few minutes to compose herself when talking about the MOST defiling abuse a person can endure. She just needed a few seconds.

Listen if we make prostitution legal then it would end trafficking because if you make prostitution legal they have to have a card something like identification card it has to be checked they have to have a check-ups every month and if they get stopped without that card then they brought in this is how you can tell the difference between of age women who just like to use what they got to get what they want no wrong with that and those were forced into it because those were forced into it will not have the proper identification

It should be decriminalized. They should have no criminal records for doing that job so that it is eazier for them to find a different job when they are ready to move on. They should have a right to a safe environment to work and they should get to see a psychologist monthly to check their mental health.

am i hearing this right? why are you comparing the shortage of human shelters with the "abundance" of animal shelters.....i appreciate you took the effort to talk about this subject but plz do not try and downsize or portray the good things in a negative light........any kind of efforts made in regard to helping a human or an animal should be appreciated alike.

    • @danielabize1398
      @danielabize1398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

What she's trying to show by doing this comparison is that we humans care little about those we judge not worthy of our care. We should care about trafficking victims just as we care about animals (more so, if you ask me, but you're free to disagree, she's not saying she agrees with me either), yet we care much less, because we find them "disgusting". That's her point, not that we shouldn't care about animals, but that we care for the wrong reasons.

She's pointing out that our country has its priorities twisted !
In the last 100 years too many people have come to place a higher value on an animal than human life !
Many people prefer animals to people because they have to contend with people
and puppies and kittens are fluffy and cute
