    Thanks for the review. I just got one of these this year after riding a 650GS. I wanted something a little smoother for adventure touring and, man, this is smooth and fun! I haven't done a lot of off-roading yet with it (still have the street tire on the front that came with the bike) but initial impressions is that it's a lot better than the 650GS, mostly because of that 21" front compared to the 19". Suspension seems better too. I agree with your assessment: don't expect it to do what it's not designed to do. I like to pack on the miles fully loaded with camping gear, sometime my wife, across the country and I'm really looking forward to touring with this bike! You you're fully healed, and thanks again for your candidness.

    Good comments on the XC. I just picked up a 2014 with 4000 miles on it and so far I love it. I'm looking forward to getting it off-road. Took a 7200 mile trip to Alaska in 2015 on a KLR650, wish I had the 800xc for that ride!

    I was using Heidenau scouts. Really great tire for most applications, except a hill climb with no room to run up, and mud;). Sometimes I miss that s bike. I was just reminiscing about it t yesterday.

    Hey! Hope you're feeling better by now. I just totaled my sportster last Sunday after riding it for four+ years. I'm doing great, just recovering and looking forward to getting into a passion I've always had, adventure riding. I love the outdoors and I love motorcycles, so it only makes sense. I've been researching these bike models for a while now, and I think I'm gonna go for the tiger 800xc. I can't wait!

    Sorry this is so late in question. I saw this as I searched around for a 2014 tiger xc review. I am looking at a dual sport and frankly was sold on a vstorm 650 until I ran into a tiger pretty much set up with 12000 miles. It is the black with red engine guards and a beautiful bike. He’s asking 7000 and will go a little lower. My question is this? I’m new to dual sport riding and going to do a couple of mild long distance rides. The tat for one. I’m not riding the passes, my ability is not strong enough for the difficult sections. This being said…is this a good buy for a first bike after years of Harley riding? I will hit creek crossings, some sand and mud if raining. I feel like if I have good 50/50 tires I should be ok with weight. I want to be comfortable on the long stretches and need the better highway feel for that. Thoughts? I’m 62 and retired airforce about 200 lbs. 5-10 on a good day. Seat height is another factor. How high is seat and can it be adjusted down some? I know you can but a ralley type seat that helps. It was good to see your review and I hope things are well with you this 6 years later. Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated. I’m about to make a offer on bike. It has good reviews except for weight and heavy mud/dirt witch I don’t plan on doing anyways. Just want to get our there while I’m still capable of doing so. Oh? Any truth to ride mode defaulting to highway when bike is shut down and turned back on. This to me is a small thing but if I was riding off-road and stopped for a bite and then continued on dirt it went back to default highway mode, it may cause an accident. I think if you know this you will make sure its mode is right before you start riding again. Thoughts? Take care and stay safe! Matt….

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well...I’ll start with the modes. Mine didn’t have a highway mode so I can’t really answer that question. I can see it being a reset when turning off the bike if I had to guess as this is the way it was done 6 years ago. The bike is the obvious choice for highway and gravel, the more it gets technical, ie sand, mud, and tight trails the worse it gets. I did a lot of pretty gnarly stuff, and it just meant more work and picking up the bike periodically. I used to use heidenaus. Great 50 50 tires and they last close to 20000 kms. I am 5’8” with a 30” inseem and was at the just tall enough to go on this ride. The seat has 3 levels and what you see in the review is the lowest setting. Hope that helps.

    Great review! I've been using my Beta 498 for just about everything. The Triumph looks to be the hot ticket for real adventure. For solo single track not a good idea but fireroads and pavement miles I bet it's hard to beat!!

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heidenau Scouts. They are good for everything but deep sand, and mud. The day I crashed was more about not having enough room for momentum, spinning the rear and hitting a rock. I was just thinking aboutand missing this bike yesterday.

    • @arnaudmarten5415
      @arnaudmarten5415 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the advice I'll try them on an adventure trip ! I really love this bike, it's so forgiving on poor roads, you never make a mistake, never afraid to fall, even with holes in the pavement on curves it drives through it like butter, it's a magic carpet.
      I have experience and skills on road but not so much offroad. I guess learnig offroad with a tiger is not the best choice. what bike would you advise to learn on offroad tracks before taking the tiger on longer trips with offroad exploration ? cheers

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Arnaud Marten Good bikes to learn off road skills are the Honda Cr250l, and if you are taller, the wr 250. you should be able to find them used and resell them and get your money back.

  • @modsurgeon
    @modsurgeon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the great review. Beautiful spot you found for it.
    I'm looking at the 2015 XCX as one of two choices, and it sounds like the new model & upgraded model provides some remedy to some of the things you feel were lacking in the XC,
    Are you a good sized guy? The reason I ask is because I'm 6'2" & 235 pounds, and am waffling between this and 1200 Explorer. I'm interested on your take on whether or not the 800 is big and powerful enough for long road trips for big guys.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      modsurgeon It's got quite a bit of power. It easily pulls past 90 miles an hour with luggage or even a passenger. The 1200 is faster and larger, but you will sacrifice even more off road. It all depends on what you want to do. Thanks for watching.

    • @bigmankz
      @bigmankz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +modsurgeon I have '13 800XC. its a Great bike. I Am 6.5 and over 250 pounds. Never had a problem with it in terms of size and power. Agree with the author of the video that the gearing is too tall for much of the off road but it compensates it for onroad experience. The engine is smooth, the seat is nice. I can ride a full tank without sore back or butt. There are few things I recommend for taller and heavier riders. Get stronger springs front and back, get the rox risers ( i got 2inch) and raise rear suspension by installing shorter links. After installing stronger springs in front I had to put a heavier oil as the oem oil was way too soft with those heavier springs. After these mods I rode over 20000 kms and I think this setup is the best.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not as big as you guys. I am 5'8" and the bike is a bit big for me. I wouldn't worry about the power unless you are riding with guys that go over a 100 miles per hour. Other than that it will hang with just about anything. I would rather over power a bike and be able to flat foot it, than to have too big of a bike and be tip toe ing all over the place and dumping it as it is quite heavy, especially with luggage. This bike will do 130 km/hr all day long without even a vibration, it's a great highway hauler. Off road you can definitely tell it's better suited for gravel and light trails.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      pokrovcek That would be a Icon Raiden Patrol. Nice all weather jacket, but like a lot of them, the waterproof main zipper is a little difficult, and I had one blow out after a year of wear (about 35000kms of wear). They replaced it under warranty (the whole jacket). I have about 20000 kms on this one. The helmet is a RPHA 10 Lorenzo Replica from HJC. Race quality helmet for under 500 bucks. Jacket costs about the same. Thanks for watching.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only problem is that it has a wrench light that comes on. Everything is easy to get at. If you go by the recommended services and get them done at the dealership, you are looking at a lot of money, but if you just do the maintenance and then when you go to sell the bike, get them to shut off the wrench light (they'll soak you hundreds just to do that), you should be good.

    • @randombuilds8336
      @randombuilds8336 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just did a valve adjustment on mine, also replaced the cam chain, tensioner, sliders, plugs and added a pre-filter. Total cost was close to $400 with an oil change, but this was an over and above maintenance for 100k miles.
      Tuneecu and dealertool will let you reset the wrench light on the older ones and the new ones with a tft dash can be turned off through a menu.

    YES! Finally someone from my neck of the woods reviewing bikes. (I'm in Saskatoon, recognized that landscape immediately haha) I'm considering the Tiger or the Bmw F800GS. I've been out of bikes for a few years (used to be a ninja guy) and a couple of my buddies stayed in it and are doing the adventure bike thing. We are planning a big trip next year and I can't decide between these two. Seems like everyone loves the Triumph motor, but the BMW sounds like it's more refined and has better options, even aftermarket parts are more available etc. I'm most likely going used, looking to keep it under 10k. If you were buying another adventure bike, which would you put your money on? One thing I really like about the GS is you can get accessories (bars/luggage racks) that are super durable and basically don't let any of the bike touch the ground when you dump it. And trust me... I will dump it.haha and haven't seen the same protections for the Triumph.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Triumph is as good on road as the BMW is off. Both are good at handling both. You will find the BMW a little buzzy on black top. The triumph is a canyon carver with a sewing machine like motor. I should have sold you mine. It was in really great shape. I traded mine in on a DR 650 that you can see me mod up now on some of my newer videos. The reason I did this was, I was doing more and more off road and getting into more and more trouble, and my other bike is a Ninja 1000 ABS which makes the Triumph pretty obsolete on the highway.

    • @KentRodgman
      @KentRodgman 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice, thanks. It's most likely that I'll be doing more highway than anything, but I would like to go off the path every once in a while. Ultimately it will probably come down to the deals I can find come spring, but I am leaning more towards the Tiger. Unless I find a smoking deal on a BMW.

  • @DigitalProphet_
    @DigitalProphet_ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    TTest rode both bikes This and the 2014 F800GS and I agree with the review in terms of the road riding. Not on the fuel consumption though. BMW is a lot better in the economy department. The Tiger is a bit better on the road for sure. Engine a bit sweeter and I feel itt had a more comfortable seat. I took it on some gravel it's not bad, but the F800GS is definitely better balanced and feels lighter and more capable off-road. As my purpose was to do more offload riding I chose the F800... otherwise you can also look at the Vstrom 650 / 1000 if your purpose is more road riding. All 3 of those bikes are probably better than the F800 for on the road, the F800 hits the "Dual Sport" a bit more in the Bulls eye imho.

    I'm almost sold on buying this bike.
    90% road, maybe 10% dirt- for that reason, I've ruled out the 800GS.
    However, how is the comparison to the Versys and VStrom?

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      much more fun, competent at dual sporting, and expensive than either of those bikes. The versys is a fun road bike, good on gravel or dirt roads, same with the strom, so they could be right for you. the tiger is better off road and the engine and tech is way cooler.
