Enjoyed your video and thought your comments were fair. I just bought a '17 XCX to go along with my 2017 Bonneville. I've enjoyed both bikes tremendously after years of owning Japanese bikes. FYI I'm 6'3 and 240.
Really enjoyed the video. It is always nice to watch balanced reviews that talk through details of what the rider has liked and not liked, especially from those like yourself that have enough miles on the bike to have a good perspective. I have a larger ADV and looking for a mid-size - your vid was quite helpful to think through this bike. Happy riding!
Steve Gantner thanks! One other thing that just happens recently you might want to know. The chain guide wears out fast. I have just over 7000 miles and the botom side wore a hole through it. Another fellow higher rider said he went 9000 ish and it tore up the rubber dampers that are in side them. The cost is about 35.00 U.S. dollars. The dampers and such will push up around 90-100. It pretty easy to change with just removing the tire but still only 7000 miles out of that guide seemed crazy. Again thank you for watching!
@Brandon Woodard most bikes that are chain drive have a guide or something similar. The one on the ZX6-R i had never really showed any wear like this Triumph. Its something to look at every once in a while, for instance while cleaning or lubing your chain. Hope that helps
I have a 2017 Tiger XRT and it is by far the best bike I’ve ever owned. The joy of riding the tripple irons out the few negatives this bike has. Put 11.000 miles on it in 9 months
Karsten Lund that's awesome. I wish I had the ability to ride more. The triple is a great engine. It's no way overpowered making it uncontrollable in the dirt
Have a 2019 XRT. I don't care for "Adventure" styling at all, but wanted an all-day all-weather bike in retirement. Man does this bike deliver! Way nice seat, power is perfect, ergonomics great as well as the comfort and convenience of heated stuff, cruise, antilock and the rest. At 5-7" the windshield makes for a quiet smooth ride even in the low position. Yep, I'm pretty much a walking Tiger 800 and. The machine earns its accolades though.😎
One of the FEW things I do not like is the front fender allows road dirt and mud to be sprayed onto the radiator, I put an extension on mine and it helps, I do not have to look for a power wash when out on the road.
Hi I have the XRX and love it. I would say the worst thing is that the air filter is under the tank and it must be removed to service it. As for the power outlet, well yes it is different but can actually handle a higher current than a traditional plug. I changed out the one under the seat for an aftermarket 2 USB plug to charge my phone. I did connect it to the rear tail light though as the original plug is always under power, the tail light only comes on with the ignition. Love the bike, and yes the triple is fantastic
@Brandon Woodard A pre filter is a filter that is placed in front of any main filter. For instance the pre filter I am talking about is a foam type that is soaked in a tacky oil film to collect dust from going into the main filter. This particular bike had a paper type filter that is suitable for street riding but not so much for dirt. Most the time the aftermarket comes up with some neat things like this that help us out on the ride.
My 2017 XRT is my 12th bike I've owned over the past few years. It is by far my favorite. It does everything reasonably well. Only gripe is the unacceptable windscreen. I've put on three different aftermarket screens and none help. Finally designed my on deflectors and corrected the problem.
To be fair, there's not really many bikes that come off the floor perfect and it becomes a to each their own thing. I recently picked up an XCA, and it's leagues ahead of my F650GS twin - which came stock with WOEFUL suspension, a stock windshield the size of a solo cup, and something they describe as a saddle, but is really a torture device from the middle ages. (And their service reminder can't be reset manually either, needs to go to a dealer or have to get a GS-911) Absolute truth on rider modes though - whoever thought it'd be a good idea to default to road mode every time the ignition went off is an idiot.
Thanks for the review. Your comments seem to double down on all the pros/cons most have about the 2017 XC- and older versions. SOoo, in Feb. I'm slated to pick up a new 2018 800-XCA with all the updates many have wanted over the years. I've ridden a KLR for several years now and loved the bike but have wanted to move up to something a bit - 'more.' The KLR just doesn’t cut the highway and back roads well enough. Though I'd have another if I could have both. I’ll be interested in seeing how good Triumph did with the claimed upgrades; lower 1st gear, new display, lighter etc…. Can’t wait. (though I’ve not yet told the rest of the household about the near future purchase….:-\ )
Richard Bloom I went to a revile party and asked some questions. The off road mode has to be selected every time you start the bike. They are offering a optional tire for off road. The wind screen has been redesigned but I don't k ow it that will fix that problem. The TFT is cool looking.
I had a tiger in 2011. a great bike but it was the wind noise that put me off. it is a pity that they cannot come up with a screen that will not deafen you as you ride above 45mph. I now have a multi 950 and with a space at the bottom of the stock screen, I find it perfect. one of the things that drew me to the multi is that is very similar to the tiger, but in my opinion has addressed some of the issues that were wanting in the tiger, such as aesthetics and screen. The triple engine is fantastic in the tiger and also a great bike.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, the windscreen is garbage. There was a rumor that the new 2018 tiger 800 has a better design its taller with a forward facing lip. Maybe I might get a chance to ride one. They were showing that the high is adjustable by pulling the windscreen forward to disengage it from the latch assembly and slide it up or down to suit your needs. The one thing that bothered me most was that fact it doesn't stay in the off-road mode when you turn the key off then on. The Triumph Rep said it was a liability for them as anyone could be getting on the bike and they want the rider to know, by pressing the button that they are in the off-road setting. Again thanks for watching and commenting. The multistrada is a nice bike!
Well, I have owned 2 of the 1200 eplorers. The air filter is under the gas tank as is the plugs. Pain in the A@@!!! The dealership reset of the service indicator is wrong. The power port I had to buy the adaptors and they worked fine. I totally agree with you on the adptor for the charger. Agree the engine is nice but it makes a tone of noise (at least the Explorer did). Nice review!
Awesome! Just curious...how tall are you and how wide are your shoulders? I ask just because I may get an aftermarket windscreen later on. Thanks for watching.
I am 6'2" and approx. 180lbs. I have my windscreen adjusted about half way up and it works like a charm. It may not look as pretty but its highly functional and has eliminated any back pain during longer rides (i.e. 900 miles to Oregon and back to CA in 2 days). The gap in between the windscreen gets rid of a lot of the noise and creates a smooth air bubble behind the windscreen with little turbulence. Its definitely one of the best investments I've made.
Man O Man, that is the only other bike that was on my list when I got my last one, It was this or the one I got, What a great video my friend. I truly appreciate you taking the time to make such a wonderful in-depth review of this bike. I love it. Buddy, you did an amazing job on this video, very well said, very well thought out and very well put together, great job my friend. Thanks again and have a blessed week my friend.
Thanks, Dale! I haven't seen any videos in a while from ya. I need to go check out my setting to make sure I got it set up to get notified from your uploads. Thanks for watching and commenting its good to hear from ya!
No sir, I have been out of pocket for a while, switched jobs, went to day shift 5 days a week and don't have near the free time i did have which does not even make sense to me, but I am working on getting back into a groove since the new job is going along nicely now and i feel like I know what I am doing there hehehe. Thanks again and have a blessed week my friend
Awesome man, it been 7+ years since I change jobs...then again I have to keep going to school to learn all the new stuff that keeps coming out on cars. My schedule is messed up as well. I work M-F 7-6 and the wife works the weekends and its a crap shoot on what hours she works. I usually go out for a ride Sunday evenings till midnight!
Makes sense, I work extra jobs on the side, it helps to keep the wife home so she don't have to work, I have been blessed with finding some good ones to work. But yes sir, I need to come up with a better way to stay on track withy buddies on here with the new shift in hours and what not. Thanks again my friend and have a blessed week.
givi airflow6401 at lowest setting, never found the need to try higher... or even close the visor. granted, in uk we don't get too much dust. lights, cheap chinese leds from amazon, year later work a treat. indicators, dropped on flat ground lose lenses, duct tape recomended
thanks for the review. apart from couple of minor changes required for specific use and comfortable ride, only thing i could improve on is my 30 inch inseam, triumph uk promised to contact me shortly...
great realistic review im looking at the new 2018 model and it seems triumph has been listening .What your review outlined was problems with air filter ,can this be remedied with aftere market filter ?.Have they fixed the problem with it switching to road mode when turned off ?Does the engine noise become irritating ive heard it whining allot on the net.
The air filter I fixed with installing an additional pre-filter that is oiled to trap about 75-80% of the dust and dirt. The switching mode was not addressed. The rep said they do that because if you were to had your bike over to another rider they want it to have all the abs and traction control stuff active. The engine noise doesn't bother me. It is kind of a Triumph thing. When your up to speed I'd say 35mph or better the noise is drowned out by road and wind noise.
@@michaelphillips7596 yes. I went to one of triumphs bike reveal shows. I lile the display the lights and the fact that you can reset the service indicator if you do your own oil changes. They also offer a more aggressive tire stock.
The service light doesn't flash. The only flashing lights would be if your riding in off-road mode. The abs light blinks. The traction control light will also flash if you're spinning the tire.
I'm a short guy and I'm toying with getting a Tiger XC. I have a 28" inseam. Do you ride with any shorter riders on Tigers and what input/thoughts can you share. Thanks and great video!
Currently I don't. There is a low seat adjustment to lower the seat down a little. There is also a redesigned seat that also is lower to make it even shorter. You might check out " as The Magpie flies" or Jen's motoadventure. I'm not too sure how tall they are but they both ride Triumph tigers and I would imagine they're shorter than me
Nice overview. Can't argue with anything here. Soft suspension, yes, but I haven't been able to bottom it. Have you messed with the settings? I have mine dialed in pretty good but I don't normally run bags on the bike. Looking at a nice skid plate engine guard combo that bolt together with out the factory mounts. Waiting on a production date.
I have bottomed it out a few times. I was on a forest service road and they have the humps that keep the water from tearing up the road. I jumped off a few of those. Also, some of the single track has little jumps, Not that the tiger is meant to jump. As for pushing around a corner and bottoming the suspension, I haven't. What company is the skid shield and engine guard your looking at from?
When you say that the display can only show up to 9999 miles, are you saying that it rolls back to zero and starts over? I am looking at a used Tiger from 2014.... shows just over 3000 miles..... could there actually be over 10,000 miles on it?
Toby 750 it really depends on what you are looking for in a bike. I do a lot of different riding. I knew that I wanted the ability to go off road so I wanted to be able to turn off the and and traction control. I went with the xca for a lot of reasons. It had heated seats and grips. The electronic cruise is fantastic for long rides as well. I think the A/T would be better off road but in.the end I still would be able to go anywhere a A/T would go. There are a few things that are irritating about the Triumh. The off road mode switching back when you turn the bike off is the main complaint for me.
Good review - it's too easy to repeat all the positives and not mention the rest. If it helps those 12v sockets are standard waterproof motorcycle sockets in most of the world. The car one you were holding isn't designed to be waterproof or used on a motorcycle.
The whine of the engine is my biggest whine after 10k. I've customized mine to my liking and it's perfect. I'm guessing you spend lots of time on forums..."I may put more lighting on just for looks." LMFAO.
also on the ktm/bmw you can change there modes while rideing and both go back to street when switched on and off/ giveing hate to things that every adv has lol logic
I talked to a rep about that. They said that it was a safety feature so that if i was riding in off road and got off and handed the keys to the next guy they would have to set the modes up to what they want. I think its lame.
James Bullock I h avent rode a 2018 yet but I believe the suspension is the same. They did shave off a a few pounds by putting a lighter muffler on it. I did sit on one and it felt the same stagnate.
James Bullock it's not a problem. Just a bit soft. There are a couple forum post about it. When you load the bike up with all the riding gear panniers and stuff in them it dosent have enough spring to keep the suspension firm enough. Its not a problem if you are a mellow rider. If you start pushing the bike it gets wobbly in the corners
The in road ride quality is soft. It gets a bit loose if you push it hard into the corners. Other than that it has a neutral or upright riding position.
John Smith I will! That's kind of the opinion and review. There are a lot of good things about the bike. But I'm not trying to sell one. Im just a guy passing on a bit of info.
@Brandon Woodard I would encourage you to test ride every bike you can. I was lucky when I wanted to test drive the tiger the dealer filled the tank up, handed me the keys and said ride it till you love it or hate it! I wish there were more dealers out there like that. I also try to go to the test ride events even if it is not a bike I am interested in. Its good to feel what other types of bikes feel and ride like. I love the Tiger for the sport bike feel but the ability to go off-road and traverse the dirt trails and road.
@@PistonSlap that makes it worse. the rear shock was replaced which fixed the problem but the forks still do it. loose shim stacks/bushings is my guess, the WP forks on my dirt bike dont do it. did you make it to 12,000 miles, did the valves need doing?
@@Simon-df2ku i am almost there. Like 200 miles away. I been debating on checking them because the bike runs so good. Maybe this winter...Im kind of on the fence of trading it in for a 250 two stroke dirtbike. I have been riding a little be if single track with the drz400 and love it. Just wish i had a lighter bike
@@PistonSlap i have a 250 4 stroke which i find easier to live with than a 2 smoker. im on the fence for trading my tiger in, mainly as service costs are insane compared to Japanese bikes
@@Simon-df2ku yeah this bike is a bit on the expensive side. I have worked on a few bmw 800s and they are ridiculous for parts. I have been looking at the fuel injected husky. It has oil injection so you don't have to mix fuel. Plus if you run low you can bum fuel from a 4 stroke guy without problem. I rode the tiger up to glacier national park this year and it was fantastic. I crossed a few national forest to get off the blacktop. So its really hard to say what Im going to do. Maybe just get a third bike lol.
LD East Anglia Association there are good things that I talked about. In all reality each person will find something that they personally like more than the next guy. Plus the list is so long on all the good stuff and bad stuff (in my opinion) that it would have made the video ridiculous. It already was a bit long. That is for watching.
I have a video of a mild single track that the Tiger was on. I'm following on the DRZ. My friend made a wrong turn and I thought for sure it was going to end up sliding down the mountain. I will tag the link in the next comment line. Check your spam box if it doesn't show up.
A good (and free) mod for these Tigers is to drill 2 new lower mounting holes in the stock screen below the existing ones.
Repositioning the screws to the new holes lays the screen down a bit - no more buffeting.

I would have to load it up and measure it. I will have a answer for ya in a month or so when I head out to Glacier national park
Im talking a out the service reminder indicator. The odometer should be able to go all the way to almost a million miles
Dam cool bike...have you compare it to the Africa Twin?
Awesome color on it...
Toby 750 I haven't yet. There isn't a lot of A/T bikes running around that someone would let me hop on and ride.
Piston Slap l like the new Triumph 800tiger but also the Africa Twin...
That's good information. Thank you for sharing it. Thank you for watching
The whine of the engine is my biggest whine after 10k. I've customized mine to my liking and it's perfect. I'm guessing you spend lots of time on forums..."I may put more lighting on just for looks." LMFAO.
Mark Jacobs the whine of the engine is sometimes to much. Thanks for watching!
It whines for more throttle at which point it GROWLS like the Tiger it is. @@PistonSlap
@@stephenbushway9885 true! I don't hear it at 100 mph!
wait what bike comes with good tyers ?
Depends on what you lile to ride. Some manufactures including triumph are now offering a more aggressive tire for off road.
also on the ktm/bmw you can change there modes while rideing and both go back to street when switched on and off/ giveing hate to things that every adv has lol logic
I talked to a rep about that. They said that it was a safety feature so that if i was riding in off road and got off and handed the keys to the next guy they would have to set the modes up to what they want. I think its lame.
Does the 2018 Tiger 800 provide a better ride ?
James Bullock I h avent rode a 2018 yet but I believe the suspension is the same. They did shave off a a few pounds by putting a lighter muffler on it. I did sit on one and it felt the same stagnate.
Piston Slap
What is wrong with the suspension?
James Bullock
It seemed to be a bit on the soft side even when it is dialed up.
Does the tiger xca 800 2018 have a suspension problem?!??
James Bullock it's not a problem. Just a bit soft. There are a couple forum post about it. When you load the bike up with all the riding gear panniers and stuff in them it dosent have enough spring to keep the suspension firm enough. Its not a problem if you are a mellow rider. If you start pushing the bike it gets wobbly in the corners
What about its onroad ride quality
The in road ride quality is soft. It gets a bit loose if you push it hard into the corners. Other than that it has a neutral or upright riding position.
Enjoyed the information, but your video is super choppy
David Hays was the video playback choppy or the content?
playback was choppy, content was fine.
David Hays thanks for the info.
OK YOu should have bought something else and complained about that.
I love the Tiger for the sport bike feel but the ability to go off-road and traverse the dirt trails and road.
are you in idaho?
Yes. Im down by boise
suspension is awful, mine knocks and bangs both front and rear
I can't say that i have ever really heard of a bike that has the right setup from the factory. I run muy preload almost maxed out.
Africa twin next then?
Flatcap007 the A/T is a nice bike. I have yet to ride one but if I could add one thing it would be cruise control.
Really envy the roads your riding where ever it is, enjoy it looks awesome
Flatcap007 most of the roads are south west and central Idaho. There is so much more to explore. Just waiting for the snow to melt off.
Piston Slap We're in the grips of winter prob nothing like yours, bike garaged until the council stops salting roads. Bikes no like salt!
Flatcap007. True. We use de-icer here. But it's been snowing on and off and in the mid 20°f.
All complaints - Nothing good by the sounds of it!
LD East Anglia Association there are good things that I talked about. In all reality each person will find something that they personally like more than the next guy. Plus the list is so long on all the good stuff and bad stuff (in my opinion) that it would have made the video ridiculous. It already was a bit long. That is for watching.
God dos he moan
That's not nice.
This bike stinks.
What do you not like? What do you think could have been designed better?
I have a video of a mild single track that the Tiger was on. I'm following on the DRZ. My friend made a wrong turn and I thought for sure it was going to end up sliding down the mountain. I will tag the link in the next comment line. Check your spam box if it doesn't show up.
