TheLaw works so fast to make these videos it's insane. The amount of detail and effort he puts into researching the different formats is crazy, I used to watch his Duel Links History videos even though I didn't really play the game just because they were so well made

In case some people are not aware, the reason the nordic archetype is divided into 3 separate sub archetypes is because of the 5ds anime, in which 3 different characters had decks based around 1 of the 3 nordic gods, they were a pro team of duelists (team ragnarok) which Yusei, Jack and Crow had to defeat 1 by 1 as a team in the WRGP tournament arc of the story.

2014 pre-duea was better
I stopped playing yugioh around 2004 and started again around 2011. It was awesome, I was marvellwd by the variety of the game.
maxx c wasnt good against sams for dallas because sams could special infinite with red and blue and deck you out if you maxx c

That's 2011 Sept I believe but it's close enough! Very fun time to play yugioh especially in terms of time wizard formats.

I use to play piper chaos and it’s still probably one of my favorite decks. I use to use creature swap to give my opp the kinka byo and b/c it’s a sprit monster it would go back to my hand. Also, tragodiea was great because you would have so much hand advantage

Between this year and the previous was when I went from playground Yugioh to locals. My first competent deck was Infernity.
My only issues with this era was Six Sams and the Sangan ruling for Xyz. Everything else is super nostalgic.
With Wattcobra at the end, I went on to play Watts almost exclusively for a while. That deck was so fun and basically unbeatable if I had Starlight Road or Veiler/Fiendish Chain for the odd JD, Black Rose, or Torrential.

Smoke grenade is another card that sat there for many years being useless, until it wasn't and then it was completely broken
7:52 this is just not true, Naturia had a spell negate and a trap negate in the previous year both of which were NOT once per turn and were basically generic, unlike Shi En.
i never understood the six sam hate, yeah it was good and it was oppresive, but the argument that the deck was strong ONLY because shi en had a negate is just silly to me, Joshua is right in saying that gateway was way too good for the time tho, it was bad card design for sure.
Personally i remember the deck fondly because it was the first archetype deck that i remember building and playing competitively in 2011, i loved how cohesive and how strong it was, it was IMO a step in the right direction for the design of future combo decks as long as you take 3 gateway out of the equation, 1 gateway six sam was fine.

When USA nationals ruled for the event that tour guide into sangan overlay would trigger sangan if detached, they were $200 a pop for the event minimum. If memory serves me correct, people were scrambling.

I get that not everyone is going to look up what a mechanic represents, but its been over a decade man.
Josh, its like matter condensing into a Black Hole.
It stayed where it was in Space. It never left, was never destroyed. But now it is something else.
As opposed to Fusion Summoning, where two things are literally fused into one, they never stopped existing, they just became something different... results in the monsters leaving the field, naturally.
23:17 I enjoy Edison and neighbouring formats (plus/minus a year or two) as much as the next guy and am open to undo Goyo Guardian's erratum (especially now that it only really matters for historical formats anyway) but let's be real here:
Goyo Guardian should never have been printed the way he originally was.
It's kind of a custom that if there are non-Effect monsters among the monsters of a given „size“ (Level, Rank, Link-Rating) than these non-Effect monsters have the highest stats in exchange for doing nothing else, as is the case with the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Gem-Knight Pearl, or the Berserker of the Tenyi who superseded Gaia Saber, the Lightning Shadow.
Goyo Guardian, however, had significantly higher ATK (and DEF) than Gaia Knight, the Force of the Earth.
Moreover, the effect he had wasn't just not a downside (analogous to Level 4 monsters with more than 2000 ATK, or Number 85: Crazy Box) but game-winningly strong, turning every won battle from a +1 into a +2 and putting you either _firmly_ back into the game or even further ahead than you already were.
Even the ATK stat on its own was ludicrous: it eclipsed not just every other Level 6 Synchro (as well as every Level 6 main deck monster) but could also beat over every Level 7 Synchro and maybe half of the Level 8 Synchros of the time.
Goyo Guardian was insane.
One could argue that this was only fine for as long as it was because Goyo Guardian stealing a monster still triggered floating effects and because upon release Synchros and other monsters with which you'd make your combos didn't provide as _much_ of a toolbox to handle the largely backrow-based monster removal of the time.
Goyo should have had 2500 atk.

Ima try hard to break tengu now. Because I agree with you, and with the crazy synchros we have now, and the fact that you can link climb with it it has to be able to do something... centur-ion or revolution synchron combos maybe?

every now and then a secret rare pops up that players have no clue how good it will be. more recent example was accesscode, being $40-50 on release before it became a $150 card. Maxx C was another - came out at start of 2011 and was like $10 and then by the end of the year was $100. I also remember Dante being $20-30 when DUEA came out because people underestimated the BA archetype and then it became an $80+ card after people realized the deck was tier 1 and dante was the only money card in the archetype
50:40 T.G. can use it, funny enough. They constantly spam Tuners to the field and need a consistent non-tuner for synch material.
Tengu is so much better than Edison I hope tengu catches on more mainstream

An xyz material being sent to GY by detaching makes sense to not be considered being sent from field to GY. Let me put it this way: XYZ material are the organs to your XYZ monster's body, meaning they are "inside" the body of the XYZ. Now lets think of the graveyard as an IRL graveyard (DUH) and the "field" as the ground we stand on. Is my heart on the groundby virtue of me being on it? I dont think so, because the heart itself is not touching the ground in any meaningful way by itself. So if we think of Sangan as the "heart" of this analogy, it makes sense that him leaving the "body" (XYZ) is not equal to him leaving the "ground" (field) because he wasn't actually there just by virtue of being in THE "body" (XYZ)
I'm talking in reference to around the 1:04:50 minute mark, which is about where the topic of XYZ rulings come up and Sangan's featured.
As a child was into Yugioh at the time I was aware of these 2011/2012 era of cards but I never played any of these decks.

I honestly hate the xyz mechanic. "Two monsters with the same level turn into 1 monster" is cool, but overlaying and detaching is dumb. Nothing else in yugioh stacks cards like that, not even equip cards. And "ranks" not being levels is pointlessly confusing.
They should have just started printing contact fusion monsters with generic "two level 4 monsters" requirements instead.

Funny that hes complaining about six sams like they were destroying the meta back in 2011 ( shy of.....2 weeks of that sets release before they got ruined by the ban list...). I think as a blue print of what a good in archetype deck/support/ boss monster can be i think six sams is it. No cringe generic boss monsters like barron, or ending the board with generic non- inarchetype monsters with omni negates etc bs.
Just like the act of main decking both Shifter & Droll shows a bad format. the act of maindecking Maxx "C" shows a bad master rule era.
Talks about how toxic rescue rabbit was, but played wind-ups legit loop cringe discard your hand you didn’t get to play yugioh.
