Well that is somewhat true. This army was very successful in things it had to achieve. They helped Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas take over the pirate ships, so they saved some lands as you can see. Then they helped in the Battle of Palinor fields.
@@satanbrony9235 In the movie yes they fought at the Pelenor fields too aside of killing the corsairs of Umbar but in the book they only fough the pirates and the ships were loaded with human soldiers that fought to defend Minas Tirith.

Plus the in the books they properly scared the sailors/pirates... That is still something. If I remember correctly the ghosts scared the pirates away out of the ships, but didn't actually fight them.

Gimli expresses doubt, saying that he's not sure if their swords could still bite. It just ended up being irrelevant, because they were so horrifying that all of their enemies ended up going mad with terror and fleeing or jumping into the water. It's left ambiguous whether the Dead actually _could_ do harm, it just doesn't matter in the end because their primary weapon was fear.

I too also thought it was the sword. Because in our dub version it says "That sword was broken" to which Aragorn says "It has been remade" so I always thought the sword was the "proof of Isildur's eir" but now I see it is his blood that allows this and sword is just an extension of his body.

His kingdom was effectively wiped out ~1300 years prior to LOTR by the witch king of Angmar (lord of the ringwraiths). Aragorn's claim to Gondor comes from ~1300 years ago (right before the fall of Arthedain). One of the daughters of the King of Gondor married the heir to the throne of Arthedain. All of the sons of the King of Gondor were later killed, and Arthedain asserted that it could claim the throne of Gondor. This was refuted by Gondor, who instated the King's nephew (or cousin, I can't remember) in his place. Later on the newphew and all of his sons died as well, but by this time Arthedain had effectively been destroyed, so Aragorn's ancestors weren't able to press their claim. Not many people know him as Aragorn, son of Arathorn, most know him as Strider, the nickname he goes by. In the age that LOTR takes place few know of Aragorn's lineage and claim to the throne. This why the "line" of Gondorian kings is believed to be broken.
I still remember the quote from Gimli before they enter the path of the dead. "An elf go underground, where a dwarf dare not. ah, I'd never heard the end of it". Love it.
Gimli was the BEST comic relief, for an otherwise intense storyline. Hit the note, every single time. One of my other faves: "That still only counts as one!"

It's more shame in what they've become more than any humbling to the King of Gondor, you have to remember these guys are actually Native Gondorians they are of the same stock as the Dunlendings and not of the Gondorians we see alive, they viewed Aragorns people as colonizers. They never viewed the Numenorean descendant kings as their real leaders.
Downloaded it this year and watch it after that horrible Ring of power was out. You have to appreciate movie years back, they are written better, acted better and directed better than today's movie

I feel like the cgi in these movies has (rightfully) been praised into heaven, but can we please take a moment to appreciate the sound design. The kings laugh, the skulls falling, it makes the scene feel truly spacious and creepy in every way and adds so much to the feel of the movie. Absolutely astounding work in that department as well.

One of the most memorable lines in Tolkien's work. "The dead do not suffer the living to pass. The way is shut." I've read tons of fiction, several books a year. I have yet to read anything that can match JRR Tolkien. Nothing comes close.

My fave bit: Legolas and Gimli have a conversation about the Dead Army later, where Aragorn deliberately introduced himself to the enemy with the kind of badassery even Sauron fears (picks the biggest boat to ride in, dresses it up with his own banner, etc.). They mention how lucky it is Aragorn managed to become so bold and powerful without turning into a cruel spooky jerk himself, which is pretty common in Middle-Earth, especially with Men. So it's not Aragorn is a legitimate king, but he's not susceptible to easy temptations either.

It's because of a big difference in production time. Peter even stopped shooting for several months because they were so unprepared to film The Hobbit. I think Lord of the Rings had 2 or 3 years of pre production before shooting. Meaning the props and everything was ready including storyboards and such. With the The Hobbit they were literally finishing up clothing and sets on the day they filmed.

This is one of the coolest CGI effects ever, especially how from far away, the king looks like a regular ghost, but as the camera zooms in, you can see that he's pretty much a skull with no lips or nose
Pretty sure he said "the blade was broken".....Earlier in the movie Aragorn said "The blade that was broken shall return to Minas Tirath".....and Arwen recited Riddle of Strider lines from the book including "Renewed shall be blade that was broken", they had to be talking about the sword here too as he had just parried him with it.
The line was not broken though, he was always Isildur's heir, either they died out or they didn't. It also sounds weird to refer to someone's lineage as being "remade", especially when he had just demonstrated the formerly broken sword and the other references to the broken blade in the movie.
@@-__9767 He did say line, he was talking about the line of Anarion, who was King of Gondor and Isildur's brother, Anarion's line was ended many years before the movies. However since Arnor, which Isildur ruled over, was the seat of Elendil (Isildur and Anarion's Father) who ruled both Gondor and Arnor that meant that Aragorn as Isildur's heir had a claim to Gondor's throne as well.
I think I'll read the books. Because once you're finished, it's awesome to watch the movies again, you know a lot more about the universe. And LOTR is a must read if you love the fantasy genre.
I got crucified for saying this by some pretentious idiots, but I much prefer the films. Every change that was made was for the better in my opinion. The books are a magnificent thing, but can be quite hard going, and there's an awful lot of walking around in the books that the films solved by scaling down Middle-Earth. Anyway, make your own mind up.
Just imagine having to act to literally air, yet Viggo puts so much emotion and makes it so believable. The entirety of this scene is like that and he just shines through all of it.

They were cursed to be exist as ghouls forever unless commanded by the king of gondor to fight and regain their honor. Aragorn, being the last remaining heir of Isildur (the first king of gondor) is the only person who can command them
Aaragorm was able to touch them because isildur his ancestor the king of gondor cursed them. And being of the same bloodline only aaragorn could release them.
Joe W wrong, Elendil was King of Arnor and supreme King of the Numenorean after the Doom, Isildur and Anarion were togheder Kings of Gondor ( one at Minas Ithil, one at Minas Anor) but when Elendil and Anarion die he choose to rule Arnor and left the kingdom of Gondor to his nephew
Funny, when they were in the process of designing these ghosts, one of the CGI team showed others the PotC trailer with the undead!Barbossa in it, and they were all "oh no"... but decided their ghosts were different enough.

This scene was necessary... Aragon had to look/seem hopeless just to build up hype when the dead king walks thru that cliff and accepts to fight.

My fave bit: Legolas and Gimli have a conversation about the Dead Army later, where Aragorn deliberately introduced himself to the enemy with the kind of badassery even Sauron fears (picks the biggest boat to ride in, dresses it up with his own banner, etc.). They mention how lucky it is Aragorn managed to become so bold and powerful without turning into a cruel spooky jerk himself, which is pretty common in Middle-Earth, especially with Men. So it's not Aragorn is a legitimate king, but he's not susceptible to easy temptations either.
He managed to use the Palantìr, which after the RIng is the most corrupting thing ever existed (it corrupts Saruman). So yeah he's pretty OP

It's because of a big difference in production time. Peter even stopped shooting for several months because they were so unprepared to film The Hobbit. I think Lord of the Rings had 2 or 3 years of pre production before shooting. Meaning the props and everything was ready including storyboards and such. With the The Hobbit they were literally finishing up clothing and sets on the day they filmed.
Love the part when Gimli always calls for Legolas and Legolas lowkey-ly protecting/helping him out.

This is one of the coolest CGI effects ever, especially how from far away, the king looks like a regular ghost, but as the camera zooms in, you can see that he's pretty much a skull with no lips or nose
The LOTR games on PS2 was some of the most fun I've ever had. Beautiful games they were.

Pretty sure he said "the blade was broken".....Earlier in the movie Aragorn said "The blade that was broken shall return to Minas Tirath".....and Arwen recited Riddle of Strider lines from the book including "Renewed shall be blade that was broken", they had to be talking about the sword here too as he had just parried him with it.

The line was not broken though, he was always Isildur's heir, either they died out or they didn't. It also sounds weird to refer to someone's lineage as being "remade", especially when he had just demonstrated the formerly broken sword and the other references to the broken blade in the movie.
@@-__9767 He did say line, he was talking about the line of Anarion, who was King of Gondor and Isildur's brother, Anarion's line was ended many years before the movies. However since Arnor, which Isildur ruled over, was the seat of Elendil (Isildur and Anarion's Father) who ruled both Gondor and Arnor that meant that Aragorn as Isildur's heir had a claim to Gondor's throne as well.

I got crucified for saying this by some pretentious idiots, but I much prefer the films. Every change that was made was for the better in my opinion. The books are a magnificent thing, but can be quite hard going, and there's an awful lot of walking around in the books that the films solved by scaling down Middle-Earth. Anyway, make your own mind up.

AdeptKing yep...those ghost men were allies of gondor but they fled once they were actually needed. They were cursed to be exist as ghouls forever unless commanded by the king of gondor to fight and regain their honor. Aragorn, being the last remaining heir of Isildur (the first king of gondor) is the only person who can command them
Aaragorm was able to touch them because isildur his ancestor the king of gondor cursed them. And being of the same bloodline only aaragorn could release them.
David Li Isildur was not the first king of Gondor he was king of Arnor Anarion was first king of Gondor.

Funny, when they were in the process of designing these ghosts, one of the CGI team showed others the PotC trailer with the undead!Barbossa in it, and they were all "oh no"... but decided their ghosts were different enough.
