I'm gearing up to traveling on the road on my Harley ! My wife just passed the 5th this month so I'm riding all 50 states starting in the spring, wishing she was with me.
In a week I head to BBNP for my 14th visit since 1972. Have NEVER seen standing water there before. Really strange. A few years back I promised my riding buddies "money back guarantee if it rains." It didn't. It snowed. Watching the Chisos turn white over the handlebars will be recalled as the coldest I've ever been in my life. But, good friends, good settings, make for good memories.
I visited Big Bend in 1988, when I was attending an oilfield engineering school in Houston. Memorial weekend, we were given a long weekend off, so 3 of us rented a Mustang convertible and headed on down. Only two of us were on the rental papers, myself ( a Scotsman), and Matthias a German. Renato, an Italian was not on the papers. Visited the same places that you guys did via the tarmac, not very much offroad, but it's suprising just where you can take a Mustang! Anyway, we spent one night in some old bunkhouse, then headed back to Houston. Renato desperately wanted to drive the Mustang, and as the road up to Marathon had no junctions except ranch entrances, we decided to let him have a go. There we were, doing 100 mph with an Italian at the wheel, a German riding shotgun and myself hanging on for dear life sitting on the trunk lid with my feet on the back seat. Over a rise and straight at two Border Patrol SUV's blocking the road. Well done Renato, we stopped without hitting these guys. Obviously they demanded our ID, especially as Renato look a little, shall we say, Mexican? What they didn't expect, coming North out of Mexico(ish) at 100 mph were a Scotsman, a German and an Italian passport thrust in their faces. Nothing more was done, much to our surprise. No licence demands, no rental papers inspection. Just "slow down a little guys. Y'all have a nice day" and off we went.
Great run out guys, can’t beat local knowledge. Chris your ability off road is only held in check by your confidence and I can see that growing the more off road you do. You Guys Stay Safe
You need to ride the River Road from Study Butte to Presidio Tx. Be sire to stop at the old western movie set on the bank of the Rio Grande. That is one of my top 5 rides in Texas.
Wow! One of the best videos! Love the quote," the bike's got much more talent than I do." Fantastic camerawork! Awesome ride!! We'll be keeping our Boulevards on the blacktop! Thank so much for taking us along! Brendan & Lena
Jay is a very good friend, and the BB area is one of my favorite areas of Texas. I usually go out there from N Texas at least twice a year. I'm nursing a broken kneecap from our last ice spell we had. I should be back to riding in April.

Love watching you two on dirt trails. I know it's dusty, but so much fun. I knew you could make it up that hill Chris, what a great ride. Thanks for the sneak peek, hope everyone is okay. See you next week.
Really used to love the videos of inside tent then tent trailer. It was just part of your life. Loved it. What about shots and videos or tour of the inside and how the living is going? Love the content as always.
You met my buddy Troy and my FB Friend Jay. It all started when you met our mutual friend Steve Sida. We have got to meet. Maybe at the GS Giants rally in Delores, Colorado July 29-31). Lisa and I will be bringing our new RV home (Grand Design Momentum 395MS-R and GS Adventure) Pete West
Great episode. I stayed in the same RV park and visited the same areas you hit. I have a bike but didn't use it as it's and older RS 1200 and wouldn't handle the off road. I agree that Big Bend is magical especially Chisos. I'm enjoying Tejas and have been following you two for about 2 weeks. Currently on the 3rd coast. Thanks for the content and be safe.
Wow what scenery and determination. I will be sticking with the paved roads. Gold-wing and all. But enjoyed this weeks video as usual. Thanks! Be safe out there! That goes for riding and critters.
Hi - thanking you again for the fabulous videos! We moved to TX from the east coast in Jan, retiring outside San Antonio and these TX rides are the ones we are so excited about! Bikes are still in storage till we get a shop built (and I get home from a deployment) but Big Bend is now on the MUST DO list!
New subscriber here. Nice videos guys. I've ridden BB 10+ years ago and some parts were difficult for me on a 250 dual sport! Good to have buddies to help pick up those big BMW's. Can't wait to see how you fared in the next BB video.
Big Bend and the surrounding area is one of my favorite places to visit. I'm headed back there in late April this year for the 3rd time. We have a group of Roadglide friends that get together a couple of times a year. The Spring trip is typically to Texas. Will be in Terlingua for a few nights, then Fort Davis. Good job Chris on those dirt roads. FM 170 AKA, The River Rd is a great ride over towards Presideo, hope y'all get to check that out. You said the Old Maverick Rd was hard packed dirt. Would it be doable on a Roadglide? I've ridden down Ross Maxwell Scenic before, and thought it would be neat to explore the dirt road, but I don't have an ADV bike(hopefully I will in the next couple of years. I enjoy following along with your adventures. Y'all are great story tellers. I'm trying to get better at that myself. I started my channel last may, and have watched several folks to get inspiration, you guys are among them. Thank you and keep on enjoying the 2 wheels, big life journey. Tim.
you could do Maverick with a road glide, a few spots would be tough if fully loaded down as there a re a few soft sandy spots crossing two riverbeds. i have seen a prius make the entire roade and also have seen toyota trucks get stuck.
Of all your different setups, I definitely like the current one the best. You can ride so many more interesting places on the ADV bikes. I had to sell my BMW GS, so now I live vicariously through your adventures. 😁
I just received the HWK jacket that I ordered thru your Amazon link. I haven't ridden with it yet. But the quality and fit for an inexpensive jacket is very nice. Im super happy with it so far. Thank you for the reccomendation. P.s. ive got 4 harleys. But I just got a Suzuki V-Strom. Very much looking forward to doing so exploring off the asphalt.
Something to remember about the Enduro Pro mode on your GSs.......it's really intended for use with knobby tires, which it doesn't appear you guys have. Enduro mode may be the better option for your type of riding.
That was such an awesome episode. Though to be honest, I have decided to stick with tarmac roads. Hopefully, we will be able to start next week, without giant storms and rain (having sidewinds all the time is really not much fun on a motorcycle).
