  • ADV Motorcycle Adventure Riding Gone Wrong! Are we ready for a BDR yet? Probably not after tackling the Old River Road in Big Bend National Park on our ADV motorcycles. It becomes apparent that our big ADV bikes are outmatched by the smaller, nimbler ADV bikes.
Many mistakes were made and many lessons were learned from this adventure ride - all of which, in our honesty to keep it real, we share with you here. Sometimes we amaze ourselves on just how little we know about many things.

You two are just the best ! I enjoy your videos so much. I just got my first adv bike, a Suzuki vstrom 1050. The heritage softail doesn't like off asphalt very much. Chris, you rocked that ride. No pun intended. Well maybe a little. Haha.

Those guys had the patience of saints. Like they said, your bikes aren't designed for this harsh of a terrain. Even experienced Jay had a problem. Chris you did great! It's an accomplishment you both should be proud of on heavy bikes, not like theirs. I probably would have had a few drinks back at camp, to try to ease what had to be a bunch of tired and sore muscles. Great job to both of you, and those excellent people that you were with. Thanks for sharing. Jayman...

I learned years ago that 10 miles off road is equivalent to 50 on road. Even with proper training, those bikes are a handful to most anyone. Glad when my g310gs will be arriving at my dealer. Much lighter and cheaper. You two are awesome to tackle and complete this ride. You'll sleep good tonight., and be stiff tomorrow.!! 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋‍♂️

That RiverRoad just seems to go on forever. The hills coming out of the draws, covered by babyheads, are exhausting on a big bike. They really wear you down, and the more tired you get, the harder they are. It's so nice when you finally hit that pavement. And you're right, nobodies coming out to rescue you. You just have to keep pushing on.
The 1250 is just to big/heavy for that ride.
    Job well done!!

I rode River Rode in December by myself on my Africa Twin Adventure Bike, I was incredibly proud I didn’t drop it one time, no one I told understood why that was a big deal. Most people said “Well, I would hope you didn’t drop your bike” You can’t understand that road until you ride it.

I have been riding that stuff for 45 years and that’s a challenge on a big bike. More off road bias tires would have helped but, still a great video. Don’t give up on those big beemers! Remember when riding those adventure bikes, it’s not if you fall but when!

I have been riding dirt my whole life and run TKC 80's on my GS. Makes a Big Difference. If you are going to keep riding that kind of terrain look at changing to more aggressive dirt tires like Mike said. They aren't bad on the street either.

I give you guys a lot of credit. I started out with an on-off road Honda SL175 50 years ago. I might have tried a road like this 50 years ago on my little SL175, but not now. I sit very comfortably on my Heritage Softail Classic and I avoid dirt roads. If someone told me we were going on a 51 mile dirt path through the mountains, I'd tell them "I'll meet you at the other end".
You guys hung in there the whole way and have an accomplishment to brag about. That is very cool! Another great video. Keep up the good work.

That looked tough. Good on ya both for pushing through! Steep off-road hills (for me) are easiest when hit with enough speed and momentum to carry me to the top without braking or too much throttle. Easy on a 250 lb dirt bike but it takes a lot of skill and guts to do it on a bigger, much heavier bike. You guys are great!

My hats off to both of you for this adventure! That "road" reminds me of going up through Nothern Quebec and on through Labrador on what they called the Labrador Through Way (its not paved). You pick up a satellite phone from the RCMP in case you break down or crash and return it when you're back in civilization (no joke). Chris you did extremely well on that ride and I admire you 100% for doing it! I wish that you could show us the "uncut version"! I guess you would have been better if you had the proper tires, even Rich was running TKC 70's, which is why he got away with driving hard compacted sand and small rocks but remember he is a big man and that helps. And if you had lowered the pressure in your tire it would have helped some! I am no expert at riding but I have been on GS since 1981 and travelled the world but again I admire you for taking that difficult trip! I'll be there next weekend for "Around The Bend". Can't wait. Nice job getting out of your comfort zone. Takes some guts to ride that stuff on a big bike.

Chris and Richard I have followed you since you first started, this is the first vlog I haven’t enjoyed. I admire you both for tackling this ride and you both did an awesome ride but it was too nerve racking for me to enjoy worrying that you would get seriously hurt. I hope you didnt have too many bruises the next day. From Australia.

Wow! You guys rock for getting through that! I’m glad you videoed it so that I don’t get the crazy idea of ever going on those roads with any vehicle, lol! The scenery was nice but oh my! The wild horses were amazed at you too.

Always amazes me how experienced riders take those who are not ready or don't have the proper equipment on these rides. Anyone on the size of bike you have would not tackle these routes. Scars are your rewards I guess!

Great videos guys 👍 when I first started riding in the 70s🙈 it was in the dirt and was a great way to learn
To read the terrain and the knowledge IS transferable to the street. Also being a little embarrassed is an insensitive to improve so don’t sweat it.
    Happy trails!!!

All in a day in Adventure riding. You already know. There is a reason your guides are riding smaller displacement bikes. Big diff. You already know the Beamers are great super slab and fine gravel road machines. It’s washed-out eroded rough stuff that takes the finesses gained from experience from rides like these. Awesome stuff and nice riding nonetheless. Ride safe and ride often.

Very true, it is one of the reasons that I downsized to a KTM 390 Adventure. Still not the unicorn, but much easier to handle in the tough stuff, and MUCH easier to pick up if you drop it.

My friends and I just got back from trying that road at the end of April. We ended up turning back. There were three of us, and we had a tiger 1200, a ktm 1290 and a harley pan america. We all decided that's a road for smaller bikes, for certain.

You guys did an awesome job getting west to east. I’ve made that ride after a hard rain caused the sand to cover the trail. It was the hardest ride I’ve ever done. I had my son with me and the temperatures were in the 100’s in July. Never again am I doing BB in July. Jay Masterson you are an inspiration!
Ride safe guys! Thank you for taking us along with you.
