  • Pecos diamonds are odd little quartz crystal formations, mostly with double terminations and weird twinning and overgrowth. They are also very sparkly. This area is near Roswell, NM and, by using "the Eye", we stopped right at a very productive area right away and got to picking. It was a beautiful, sunny January day, with zero wind - one of the reasons New Mexico is so special. Of course, the very next day, all heck broke loose and the winds were gusting above 60 mph. I saw some VERY large Pecos diamonds at the Tucson mineral shows, up on the north end of town somewhere, last year - some Las Cruces guy had obviously "cracked the code" on finding the whoppers. Our little find this trip was a good starter - we will be back for more.

Very nice! I like those double terminals with the over growth! I’ve picked up quite a bit without.

Hey Terry, we were just down your way on this trip. Was thinking of looking you up, but we came back early due to wind forecast - the "Danger Van" is a bit annoying to drive in 60 MPH gusts, LOL. We camped on BLM on the road to Queen, and went looking for pink desert roses further south, but like I said pulled the plug due to the storm. If you are interested, maybe we could go together next time - remind me your contact info by email.

They are found over a very large area, pretty much from Artesia north. Do some "Wandering" and you'll likely come across them. Check where "white meets red".

I really like the orange oxidation color. I'm not sure if that is oxidation or just inclusion. But most people want to bleach with acid. But I leave the color on most.

The color is permanent. What is weird about these little dudes is just how sparkly they are, even with the color inclusions.

Yea they really are beautiful. I find some here in Pennsylvania that have orange/red coating typically so to clean is to remove. But I also find some that the color is inside where crystal grew together trapping it. The light reflecting inside crystal in turn makes the whole thing appear orange. It's really interesting. Take care and god bless

Wow these are beautiful. I live in Pennsylvania, moved to California when I was 16. Bounced around and ended up driving across country with a friend to get home. Went route 40 through new mexico. Was an interesting and mysterious place for sure. I swear where I read the sun light looked completely different than other places. Do you ever sell any of your pieces? I have some decent points from PA but smaller. Typically hard to get without breaking off boulders at open strip mines at coal pits.

It's hard to sell stuff for me due to time investment - I have a day job and my limited free time is spent dirt-busting! You can find some yourself, for sure. I think that Enchanted Minerals has a page that shows the general distribution of the formation that produces these. It is a huge area. My advice? Look at where red and white meet, and look for the dragon-bone looking rough white rock. I think it is the host. One place that may have some to sell is Fields of Malachite if they are still around. Some Las Cruces dudes have the angle on huge ones, but I forget their handle.
