You and I are cut from the same cloth Paul. I've always wanted to play Yu-Gi-Oh my way, but that feels a little like bringing a water pistol to a gunfight, but that's what's fun about it to me. I construct a deck that is uniquely mine, and not from some overpowered decklist. I love my Blue Eyes deck, and I'd love to make a Kuriboh deck someday

I used to be passionate about playing yugioh, i went to as many competitive tournaments just for the sake of being there, i tried participating in every local tourney available, but in the end what made me drop off yugioh was just the rapod power scaling. It felt like a couple weeks when swordsoul was the top dog of the competitive scene then all of a sudden tearelements came out then minako came out and everything else got powered up and super expensive. Yes alot of it was skill issues but at the same time there came a point were the game became too expensive and too one sided to be fun enough to be passionate about

I have been playing Yu-Gi-Oh on and off since it the DM era. I used to play with my friends in my old neighborhood up until I moved. I originally stopped shortly after the move due to not having anyone to play with (it happened to be right around Synchro Summons were introduced). I started playing again in college when I was apart of my college's gaming club (not long after Xyz Summons were introduced). Stopped again not long after. It wasn't until the pandemic where I've picked up the game again and have been playing since. Only ever been to one locals so far. I plan on at least trying to enter more whenever I can, but money and other priorities prevent me from doing so.

  • @CommodoreCards

I guess for me, it all boils down to a couple things when it comes to Yugioh. For one, I really like searching for and collecting the coolest versions of the cards I use. Within reason of course, I don't typically spend $100+ on a single card unless I've got some serious trade credit, but still the hunt for that sort of thing is a big part of the fun for me. I also view deckbuilding as a sort of "artistic expression," so when I think of or hear about a deck I really like I do my best to make it work no matter how bad it might seem at first. There's just something about taking a B-tier (or worse) deck, working on it tirelessly to iron out all the problems, and then actually managing to win games with it that's extremely satisfying! Like, I know my Barrel Dragon deck isn't competitively viable, but that doesn't mean it can't win games and when it does I can't help but smile.

Alright, I got a lot here XD I agree with what some things other people have said regarding using your meta paper-decks with your friends and how you should do it more, but if you want a game recommendation, definitely try Yugioh Falsebound Kingdom. It's an incredibly weird game, kind of like an RTS? I think it could definitely give you some fun content if you want to react to it.
As for my journey, I was obsessed with Kaiba as a kid, started with his starter deck (was super bummed it only had one blue-eyes after watching the anime for a while) and played fairly religiously (albeit casually) until Crystal Beasts came out. I took a bit of a hiatus there, and now, while I don't play Yugioh as often, I have a few paper decks (Cyberdark and Egyptian Gods) and I still love Master Duel (Venominaga is bae, no matter how janky she may be) and to be honest, your channel is what made me really get into master duel and even rewatching the anime again.
Seeing your passion for the franchise as a whole and the amazing creative content you do always gets me really hyped and pumped, to the point where this is actually one of the VERY few youtube comments I've ever left. You've really touched me with your content, and however you continue Yugioh, I hope you remember to enjoy it, like all things special to you.

My yugioh journey.. My intro to yugioh was through the 5D’s manga, as a little kid. Then, my first non-promo card, Wattpheasant, which was given to me on the playground years ago. That was my only card for a long time, then I got the Utopia structure! Then came along Lightsworns, this is when I started to get “competitive.” Then a very long break, master duel releases. I’m way into it now, I play Dragonmaids & Synchrons on MD, and I’ve built my first tcg deck, Synchrons once again, and I’m loving the game so much. Binged the 5D’s and Duel Monsters anime, (got a thing for 5d’s) and I’m hooked once again.

I’ve had a sort of up and down relationship with the game. I wanted to play as a teenager but didn’t have the expendable income and by the time I did I was big into my local CEDH scene and was trying to knock over as many shop tournaments as I could. Then I got into my 20’s and I played it a little bit again but the pandemic hit and I couldn’t really do it alone, but I could build and paint Warhammer 40K miniatures so I got super into that and went to a bunch of tournaments after lockdown. Now I’m kinda in the nebulous phase between all three where I only have so much money for hobbies and have friends who are into one or two of the hobbies but not all three so when I prioritize one or two over the others, I have some friends giving me trouble over it. It’s a weird relationship

For collecting, I would love to get like a set of binders where I just have 1 of every card name with either the highest rarity or favorite alternate art on display in a logical order, maybe by initial release of the card (so something like Dark Magician would be very early on in the set, even if I picked a newer print for the display). Problem is that level of organization would require like a solid month of active effort to even start setting up, given there's over 11k cards now.

On the video games side, I've always thought that tag force sets a very good baseline for what a Yu-Gi-Oh game should be like. Just in terms of mechanics for how you get cards for various archetypes and your deck.
I've always wanted a Pokemon style game, where you run around, challenge others, unlock new archetypes and cards and so on. I wish they'd do something like that.
More commentary like deck flexing would be fun. Speaking of which, I wonder if it would be possible to get in touch with Doppio and make a Master Duel video together. I think the way he plays Yu-Gi-Oh is a good match for the team APS style and it would be fun to get someone outside of the typical Yu-Gi-Oh sphere for a video. The decks need to be either Dm or Gx era and then have like 15-20 stack of only field spells and shuffle and the top card is place in the middle as untargetable and continuously is active for both players.
The field spells need to be simple effects like increase or decrease attack/defense.
The stage chosen can stack effect with the field spell played.
I think this would be fun as unexpected advantage to a player or a change of to even add field spells on the deck that normally never uses.

However, being who I am, I worry that I won't be prepared for stuff or that I won't know what to do when I get there, and I'll embarrass myself. So personally, I would like to see videos talking about things like that.

I face similar challenges. Pokemon and Yugioh TCG both are sources of ire and joy for me. One is so simple and the other so complex and are complimentary in my life. They both scratch that collector/hoarder money-burning itch that I have and when I'm hating one I always go to the other lol.

I enjoy watching the old school structure deck battles. I really enjoy yugioh and the videos you make. Reasons for feelings towards yugioh include the nostalgia, competitiveness, and Kazuki Takahashi, his manga was classic and legendary. I got into right when it was introduced to the states in 2002 as well. Fell for the anime, the cards, and just the lore in general. I would probably be more of a fan if my athletics didn't get in the way. However I'm still a fan, and I enjoy all your videos. I don't care what you do. I just hope you keep making these videos revolving around yugioh.

My journey isn't super eventful. I only ever really felt attached to the original anime. Each new generation just didn't feel quite the same to me.
My dad and I watched the original anime as far back as I can remember. I don't recall what my first handful of cards came from, but it was a booster pack. My dad and I would split the cards in half to duel each other. (I only had 6 cards, so you can imagine how short lived duels were at the age of 5. 😅)
My dad ended up buying the original starter decks for yugi, kaiba, and joey. I ended up with joey's. I kept collecting cards from new packs and refining my deck each time I managed to scrape together $3-4.
I did stop collecting at one point, but kept rewatching the original show. I ended up in 2016 finding a card collecting shop near where I was staying at the time. And the box to pull packs from contained the legendary knights/dragons. It felt like I was completing my childhood dream of getting all the cards needed to play each of those monsters from the show. (Albeit very tedious to actually perform some of the summons.)
My goal was/still is, to build a deck that is true to every single character from the original anime. With as few new gen card supports for those character's decks.
For no particular reason I just stopped. I really should get back into it again. I last stopped on a Raphael/Guardian deck.
To me, having a deck for each of the original characters, lets me feel like I am part of the original characters, because that show has been apart of my life for 20+ years now. It'd make for a good check off on the childhood dreams. (Except for still wanting a REAL duel disk to project cards! For that I'm gonna have to keep dreaming 😂)

I just wish they had decent support for the red eyes archetype. They’re just worse cards than Kaiba blue eyes cards. Black metal dragon is the best one in the archetype and the rest are mid or below
I want some straight up red eyes support and not just rebranded Joey cards. I was a Maiden with red-eyes and a beautiful field spell card ect.
With strong effects that can make it hang in there with dark magician and blue eyes decks.

with yugioh, i still consider myself very very new to the game. ive been playing for at least a year mainly with master duel. but i have been able to go to a card shop and pick up a few actual packs. its just that the only card shop i know of is 3 hours away from where i live. and i havent been able to get any friends in to the game. but id still like to get my main deck physically and hopefully some more. as for my actual skill, im definitely not the best and still learning. and while i did make it to platinum once in master duel i average around silver cause theres still a lot i dont know with big combo decks and where i can interrupt their plays. but i still love to play and each match feels like a learning experience. and deck building itself is just plain addictive. ive made so many even though most i cant generate to test them out. i think ive rambled on long enough so ill end this with yugioh is a really good game. pass turn

You're a true Yu-Gi-Oh player, mate. one I would be proud to duel any day although I'm sure I would lose because I like to play old school decks and don't abide by Konami's ban list. I think it makes the game more fun, although we always swap up decks so we can laugh at the ridiculous FTK and OTK wins, but don't get stuck in a frustrating loop. Casual and laid back with good friends and lots of laughs with some epic moves... THAT'S what Yu-Gi-Oh is about for me!

I stick with the old video games nowdays. The GBA, DS and PSP games are all like having these time capsules of specific eras and formats and the fact that some of these games have proper story modes and progression and stuff where you're buying packs and building up decks, and you can replay them with different decks, etc, it's more than enough to keep me entertained in my adult life. I wouldn't have time to get into the actual card game even if I LIKED modern YGO, which I don't.

Watching you & Alec just build decks and explain your thought process throughout would be cool. These could be TH-cam streams. But please keep them public so people can go back to them whenever. It’s something nice to watch or have on as background noise. Watching people theory craft is cool.
Having a “training a duelist” series with your other friends would be cool. Slowly acclimate them to the game. You and Alec each mentor a person. If you use that name, I would like credit 😅
Or do some kind of “locals’ series like CrushCards does 👍🏻

My Personal Yu Gi Oh Goals Especially in the short term is trying out other Decks and Strategies Especially for Dual Links and not just stick my usual Dark Magician or Blue Eyes Decks all of the time. No Matter How Terrible or Out Dated or whatever they are I would still like to try them out maybe starting with Jess's Crystal Beast Deck, and it's same for the Physical Decks too. Anyways my personal history with yu gi oh is that I have been playing since the beginning and ever since I have been I Personally found going back to Pokémon was incredibly Boring for a Really Long Time. I even tried to add a lot of rules in an attempt to make Pokémon more closer to yu gi oh in terms of fun level, that didn't really work out. Anyway my original goal was to buy every single Starter and Structure Deck that didn't work out either, as I some how I had Fell Out of Yu Gi Oh Not due to Lack of Interest or Rage Quitting or whatever I just Fell out. Then it wasn't until the Wind Structure Deck that I Fell Back in the game, and even then I don't have all of the Starter and Structure Deck. Then Some How I Fell out again again not out of Interest or Rage Quitting until I Think it was XYZ Area and again finally until the Pendulum Area. I think it was the fact that I didn't know that there was a new Anime out at the time I wasn't exact ally on TH-cam as much back then. In fact because of it my First 5D's Episode was the episode where Yusi had just gotten arrested and tattooed.
And as I understand it you where looking for Video Suggetions? If you are aside from going back to Skits could you guy also start doing dual videos where the both of you have a set of goals to accomplish Dual Links Style? I'll even be happy with Lore Videos as well. Or even start a 'Why No One Plays...' series.

Have you guys ever tried playing free for all duels? I know the current problem of the monster card zone though I think just allowing 1 Extra monster per player in the zone and for links you'll probably need to make a custom ruleset or not allow them. Off the top of my head I'd say maybe have it where you effect one players board of your choosing. Or you can effect all boards. I'd say it will take trial and error to figure out a ruleset that's fair.
Also each player will have 2 extra card zones but will only be able to play one card each. The reason is just to identify which side you are effecting the right or left.
Also don't get rid of your collection. You like many other yugioh fans seem to miss one more category. Creation.
I dont know why more people don't do this.
Yugioh has so many cards and with that there are many ways to play the game that Konami may never implement. That's were the fans come in. We create new ways to play. All those cards you have can come in handy to create new ways to play yugioh.
I have many ideas not just for yugioh but other card games as well. Though it's hard to get people on board due to most seemingly not open to change. Though I think in time they'd come around once the concept have taken root.

My goal is to get more people to play tcg's. I've got a lot of friends who are getting older and are starting families. I realize that if new people don't play tcg's, then the hobby will die due to technology. I am trying to show my friends that playing tcg's is a great way to:
    1) Take a break from technology.
    2) You can leave a game on the table. It's not the same as leaving a game turned on.
    3) You and your partner can watch TV and play a game simultaneously.
    4) Kids love to learn new things, and they love to do planned activities with their parents. Tcg's are a great way to have a common interest with your kids and their friends they are going to make over time.
Just overall, I think our society has been blinded by tech. A lot of people would probably enjoy tcg's, but they don't realize it's an option for a hobby or just a family game night.

1: Watch yugioh on tv and start playing in 2006. Become best friends with a guy at school.
2: Get serious with yugioh in 2010 with more friends while you rack up loses by the dozen with Zombies.
Me: Atleast paying yugioh with friends is great fun.
Life 2011: *Hehe, its September. Strap up for a group war at school that will shred the social bonds you once cherished.*
3: Witness some new guy interupt your cursing quarrel between your once best friend who grew an ego. Plan duel to settle dispute on terms of new guy.
Meantime, see your archnemesis vocally downplay you everywhere you go.
4: New guy is seen as a loser after revealing fairy main deck, joins your ranks and the Duel turns into fierce skirmishes between group A and B.
New guy vows to be your shield wall, crackdown on opposition his 'The Agents' deck. Group A shocked.
5: Ego guy is furious, pushes his girlfriend to duel as well who loses a friendly duel, Ego guy blames all on her, breaks up, breaks down and grows a depression.
Dispute cleared, friends and ego guy grow back together, socialising under the 'turf wars' winner group B 'Team Dark Sanctuary' and group A 'Skywalker' is gone.
Me: Playing yugioh with friends is more fun with 7 decks.
Life: *Hehe, Dragon Rulers say hi. Also, all your decks fall apart. Happy dueling.*
6: Your friends quit yugioh by mass and you sell your collection to buy a PS4.
Later, everyone gets back into the game but you. Remain deckless until 2015, returning with a modernised Diamond Dude Turbo and masked hero engine.
Attends regional where yugioh community got a stroke, believing Volcanics are meta with Quiliphort and Necroz, after receiving support: Blaze Accelerator Reload.
Steamrolls competition to fall short on Infernoids and miss Top 8 by a nose. Meantime, 'that guy' pretends former quarrels were no big deal while he racks up loses against your Dark Synchro.
7: Your friends quit yugioh by mass again, in favor of Cardfight Vanguard and drag you in. Quit by mass again in favor of Digimon and drag you in.
They quit shortly after in favor of Mtg, claiming Digimon Meta looks like yugioh. Hands collection over to you while you sell their cards to rank a small fortune.
Now you stay in contact and not much els cuz they move from rent pain and you study...

Anyone have any advice on what decks i can recommend to some friends in master duel. Im trying to get my friends back into yugioh ( they haven't played since dm era) one of them got onto traptrix and is doing fine but the other 2 i can't think of decks to recommend. One of them dosen't like playing against long combos and doesn't understand any of the extra deck mechanics past fusion So far, I've only thought of stun. And the other i have no clue at all since i know nothing about how they play or what kind of decks they like other than they used to play toons. Im looking for decks that are easy to learn but also modern so they can learn the new pace of the game and not get completely oblitirated in ranked.
