    My mom used to have an Oscar, and every time my dad would walk in the room he would play dead and sink to the bottom of the tank. When he left the Oscar was just fine. It just really didn’t like my dad.

    Remember the song "Ebony and Ivory"? I'm singing it in my head right now. LOL. Anyway... my Oscars, Ricky and Lucy, started out in a 10 gallon, then moved to a 20 gallon long, then to a 50 gallon, and finally to their forever home - a 120 gallon. No tank mates at the moment, but I am thinking of adding my larger species pleco or my senigal bichars when they get bigger. Not sure if that will work or not.

  • @nicolassalcedo5496
    @nicolassalcedo5496 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not looking for a fight but I have seen a Oscar kept pretty well in a 40 gallon breeder vs a 50/55 gallon aquarium. The 40 having over filtration and minimal decor for extra swimming space. Maintained with spot cleans and multiple weekly water changes to keep water parameters at acceptable levels.
    The 40 gallon breeder’s width is 18 inches vs some 50/55 gallons being way too narrow with around 12-14 inches in width. Personally being in the hobby for years now, I would say a 60 gallon breeder is the smallest you should go based off of width/turnaround space for your Oscar and bioload not a 50/55.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve kept Oscars in 40s before. The issue that I’ve had was when they became full grown (10+ inches). While it can work, it’s a bit cramped. That’s why I always recommend 75 and up. This offers the 18” front-to-back space that you mentioned.
      Thanks for sharing…nothing to fight about. 🙂

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m my opinion, it can be as simple as a larger sponge filter or a medium sized hang-on-back for a single Oscar in a 75. I’d probably do a partial water change every 10-12 days on average, depending on the water parameters.

  • @EverythingAvron
    @EverythingAvron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Out of curiosity does the “inch per gallon” rule not apply for Oscars? reason I ask is I have a 125 gallon and with the inch per gallon rule I could put 8 assuming they grew to 15” each? I have 6 in there now but they are still young

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The inch per gallon rule is actually bad advice given by many chain pet stores. For some fish it can work. For example, ten 1” tetras in a 10 gallon aquarium could possibly work (proper filtration, plants, etc.). However, you cannot put a 10” Oscar in a 10 gallon tank, or 8 of them in a 125 as you are suggesting. In fact, when yours grow larger, 6 will be 3-4 too many in your 125. You may have to give away or sell some of them, or get a second tank for the others.

    • @EverythingAvron
      @EverythingAvron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TazawaTanks thank you for the quick reply!! So if I went up a little bit more to a 150gal how many oscars would you recommend?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EverythingAvron still only around 3, because it’s the same length and width, just taller. It really depends on the fish behavior more than the water quality issue. If they become aggressive, you could have issues.
      A 180 is 72x24 (length width), so you may be able to have 4 or so. A 240 is 8’ long, so you may be able to have all of them if they don’t fight. Doubtful though. It can be done, just not easily.

    I have a oscar around 3-4 inch. I’m getting a arowana and he’s about 5-6 inches, the thing is my oscar isn’t really friendly with other oscar So i’m pretty scared if I should add my arowana in?

      If you already have 2 Oscars that dont much get along, I would not introduce any new fish. This could stress them out even further and spike their aggression. If you DO try it, have a back up home and option for the Arowana. Hopefully, you are working with something at least 125g?

    How long do you think, in your opinion, you could grow one out in a 55 gallon tank that was well maintained by itself? Would you be able to get a year, maybe slightly more out of that tank before upgrading to a bigger one?

      I would say until it was around 8-9” long.

      Thank you! I would suggest to keep the flowerhorn separate from an Oscar.

    Not feeling it for Ebony and Ivory. Loved the movie references though. They made me laugh and remember some good times. I think you should call the albino Lennon and the dark one Hendrix.

      That sounds like a 55 gallon aquarium. That’s a little on the small side for an Oscar.

    I don’t know if it’s actually true or not but I always heard if you give Oscars shrimp too often that it’ll cause hole in the head disease I feed my Oscar’s freeze dried grass hoppers and snails out of my 20 gallon planted aquarium💯
