Agree with you 100% about the tank size, unless you have some serious filtration. We had an Oscar in our 75g planted tank. Bought him as a juvie, knew he'd get big. But we needed something that would clean up a swordtail explosion. Baby swordtails were his favorite food. But by the time he got big enough to eat the adults he was big enough to hassle everything else as well. I don't recall having a problem with the plants. Most of our plants are planted near rocks, maybe that dissuaded any uprooting. He was a phenomenal fish, I'd love to get one again. But 75g is definitely too small. By the time you add wood and rocks there just isn't much room for him to swim. I'm not running a bare-bottom abomination just to fit a fish.

omg there a lovely i 149 uk gallons tank and looking so get oscars and my dad had when i was growing up and i always wanted to have them in my front cos there relaxing to watch great video different help me out thanks
I have 2 Oscars with an Geophagus and an Gouldsaum in my 145g tank and they seems to get along good. My Gouldsaum is the most agressive fish in that tank but its not an problem so iam happy about that
For some reason all my Oscar's have been super aggressive. I added a whole bunch of other new world cichlids with my tiny oscars in a 3ft tank but had to move them due to them attacking everyone, even bitting the net. Don't worry the 3ft is just a qt tank. I'm in the process of setting up a 6ft×3ft×3ft.
That's the crazy thing about cichlids. They often have such diverse personalities. Mine have been really good about accepting new fish once they get used to them.
I have a Polypterus (Lung Fish) with my two Oscars. I almost got a Rope Fish the other day but they were already all sold :( I would like to have a pangasius or 2 with my Oscars. Thoughts? Would that work out? I love Pangasius for their rather chilled manner of swimming up and down. I don't want that to stress or annoy my Oscars though...
The pairing would be fine. I wouldn’t keep that fish in anything less than about a 18-20ft tank. I’ve seen them get at least 4ft long and extremely round and somewhat tall - they are extremely large fish.
I have a 100 gallon bow front tank and and I'd really like to breed my oscar but still want some tank mates to add a little more color and activity to the tank but dont know what would be acceptable to add
I have a 150 gallon your 3 seems pretty nice in your 120 I want to get 6 what do you think will I hate it? How often do you think I will have to clean it? How often do you feed them i feed my 8inch Piranha like once every 4 days a large amount of shrimp? I see everyone feeds these daily small amounts any thoughts?
I feed mine twice per day. They are very messy eaters and produce a lot of waste! For me personally, I wouldn’t add anymore to the ones I have unless I had a 180, but I’d probably want a 220 if I were adding a couple more.
Your reds are so beautiful I'm being very picky with Oscars because I will be stuck with them for a long time most are kind of ugly cause they are mass produced at petsmart and similar places maybe I'll just do 4 instead of 6 idk if I can even find 6 kinds that I like anyway
I also love the sponge filters man pet stores push the mechanical filters hard lol your telling me I have to spend more than $5 for a filter and then I have to replace these $$ cartridges that you sell every few weeks instead of just squeezing out the poop out of the sponges for life lmao
I have a pair of oscars and the big one is pinning the smaller one in one corner once inna whiten they lip lock but other than that the big one typically just nudging the side of the small one the small one typically doesn’t come out of the corner and allows the big one free range of the tank when the nudging occurs it’s very gentle and sometimes the smaller one will shake little is this the big one seems to be obsessed with the smaller one i had the smaller one first and it was the aggressor at first but seems like the bigger one has now become the aggressor No bite marks / no fin tearing but is this .. bullying ? Or mating behavior ?
I'm not sure what it is about heaters that sets the aggression off in some Oscars, I've had a few over the years that took a dislike to the glass tubes haha
Is it possible to add a mbuna yellow lap cichlid with Oscar. I have one that I got Free from someone that seems a bit to big for my general mbuana tank. I'm thinking of getting g into Oscars, buying a large tank a recommended amd maybe add the large mbuna with the Oscars. Maybe my convict as well with is getting bigger than the rest in current mbuna tank.
My oscars (3 between 5-7 inches) are with a blood parrot (4 inches), an arowana (12 inches), and a jaguar cichlid (6 inches). Do you think they will eventually fight? The arowana is the only fish that shows damage with a few ripped fins. They are in an outdoor 12 ft., 1,700 gallon heated pool pond. Once they grow a little more, I plan to add a redtail and maybe remove the parrot cichlid and then leave the stocking like that.
Sound like a great set-up. If I had to pick one fish in that mix to keep an eye on it would be the Jaguar cichlid. However, you have a huge space for them, and if there are some hiding spots for the oscars and jaguar it might work out. Just keep an eye on them. Would love to hear updates on the set-up as you progress!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I'll be sure to update you if anything changes. Thinking about making some vids on the pond and my other fish. And I will keep an eye on the jag and remove him if anything changes. Thanks for the feedback!
I have three Oscar’s in a 55gal for a start out they are babies they like 4 inches I’m about to move to Nashville ima grab an 125Gal but I don’t see why y’all call it the red Oscar it’s called an copper Oscar I own one now I have an copper black Oscar and an lemon Oscar they all around the same age and around 4in I’ll be grabbing a 125 gal in like 2 months accurate video tho I salute
Does keeping three Oscars work for you? I prefer pairs because I heard they can become closer to one and outcast the third one. I just got a 125 gallon and want to get two young Oscars.
Great question - I don't but I do leave some type of very dim room light on so they can at least see another fish coming into the area to snack on babies.
I have a 150g tank with 3 oscars and 1 Bala shark. Well a year later my oscars are playing the mating game. I never intended them to breed nor really want them too. But I don’t want my 3rd wheel Oscar or my beautiful bala to get hurt. Should I take them out of the tank if babies are laid? Or can I leave them in there and maybe the mating pair will leave them alone?
Good question! Once they start breeding the other fish in the tank may take a beating. You may have to remove the others if you want to raise the fry. Keep in mind you may have a LOT of fry. : -)
Prime Time Aquatics I don’t want fry. Lol I never put any flat rocks in there or anything so they would be comfortable enough to mate. Lol they just moved all the rocks to the bottom of the tank. but I don’t want my bala to get hurt. the oscars have never picked on her but I know how mating season goes in the animal world
I have a question. I rescued a 5 year old tiger oscar cichlid from someone but he clearly is not the size he is supposed to be. he is only 6 inches. what should i do?
I actually have and oranda and a black moor that pretty much school with my Oscar's. The Oscars are only about 6 inches now. And the oranda and black moor will be moved to my koi pond soon
My large Oscar who I had to give away when pregnant as couldn't look after it properly use to get a pinki mouse once a week it was huge ... I had pet snakes so had frozen mice for the snakes that were brought frozen and I defrosted them etc 😂
My large female Oscar only eats small fish that I spend money on. I bought a school of 18 3” fish, and they were gone in a few days. Then I decided to put some convict fry (around 1”) to cull them... she didn’t touch a single one and now some are pushing 2-5”. I thought it would be safe to add some Buenos Aires tetras that were over 2” each, and she ate them. She’s a diva. Her life-partner died (blind, and I’m guessing egg-bound) and she sulked On the bottom of the tank in the corner I removed the body for months. I adopted a friend for her, and she rejected it for a few months, but she’s finally accepted it. After the last water change, they started exhibiting spawning behavior, choosing a rock, “cleaning” it, and becoming very aggressive/territorial. I was trying to bring a worm to her a little while ago, and she ignored the worm and attacked my hand 😂 I love them.
I've had oscars do the same. Leave guppies alone in a tank that were there before the oscar and eat anything else that was small enough afterwards. So weird. Sounds like you may have a pair!
Prime Time Aquatics I’m hoping it’s a same-sex pair like I had before. 😳 I don’t want to deal with fry, or parents protecting fry. The large female (around 12”) i currently have I saw laying eggs a year ago, the only other time she’s ever bitten me. I assumed the blind one, that she was so close to, was male, but unable to fertilize the eggs due to being 80% blind (rough estimate). After the blind one passed away, I discovered she had eggs in her ☹️ I coulda sworn it was a male/female pair with how they interacted, but I was wrong. Her new friend is still pretty young, maybe around 7-8”, and has recently discovered that the 12” Vieja syns/ flowrhorn hybrid is a pushover 🤣 I’m planning on moving my biggies outside to a 720gal fiberglass tank with a window in the coming month. As far as the plastic lid, it might have been condensation droplets collecting and moving.
Great video! I plan on putting a six Oscar colony in a 650 gallon tank. You mentioned green terrors are typically too aggressive. I know from my ears a saltwater side of things that when we get to really large tank volumes a lot of stocking rules kind of go out the window. Would that possibly be true in regards to that colony of Oscars and a green terror?
Are there any scavengers in the tank like plecos or catfish? Any other fish? It's crazy how sneaky other fish can be - get in and eat the eggs. Sometimes it helps to leave a dim room light on so the parents guarding the eggs can see a threat coming.
Any recommendations for something to add with my Oscar, I thought large mystery snails will be cool but the Oscar was not okay with that. I was thinking about adding my large common pleco but the tank has only sand and rocks would a piece of Beach Driftwood be okay for the common pleco? Other wood does not match the light sand in the tank...
Common plecos work, but they get so huge (18" should be pretty easy in an aquarium).Mine have always left full-grown bristlenose plecos alone, although there is no guarantee your will.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok thank you very much i was thinking about the geophagus* as a tank mate to help keep the sand clean. My concern for the pleco was the lack of wood in the tank and if beach drift wood is edible for the pleco. As a new fish keeper i bought a turtle , an oscar and a pleco for a 20 gallon. I have now educated myself and have began the process of making things right. Aka Mylasian turtle in a 75g east asian themed tank , oscar and pleco in 125 sand and rock tank. Sorry for all the questions, love all your videos.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is your thoughts on an oscar with a flowerhorn? I've had a couple haps in with my flower horn while I remodeled their tank and Pebbles ( FH) did just fine with ignoring them for the most part. He's about 5 inches and a gentle giant and I just ordered an Oscar . I have a set up to put him alone but if possible I'd like to give pebbles a budddy . thoughts ?
I’m not sure about your set-up, but with mine I think the Oscars would be too active for angels and they would probably eat all the food before the angels got any.
Really considering oscars for their personalities and have a 90 gallon tank cycling. Wanting to do 1, but would 2 be pushing it? Wouldn't do anymore than that in a 90 for sure.
My Oscar pair just laid a huge clutch and I don't know what to do...! I have cichlids in my tank also and I'm sure theyll eat the fries up if the eggs survive... I don't the space nor the time to set up another tank
If you don't want to raise them just leave them alone. They will become fish food for everyone else. There isn't a very strong market for Oscar fry because they have so many fry.
Help. I have two oscars but can’t tell if they are male or female they are full size about 12 in long. Had them about 3 years. But they have never had babies. They do every thing that a male and female would do. But no eggs. ..any ideas ..?!
I just got a baby one for my 90 gallon. I also have him with a jeweled cichlid, 2 blood parrot cichlids and a green phantom pleco. I'm in the process of removing all of my nano tank set up in place of larger set ups. If there is anyone in Eastern MA who wants Free set ups with fish included let me know.
It depends on the other fish. If they are on the more aggressive side the new oscars might get bullied. If you try it I would have a back up plan just in case.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics there all juveniles 3-4inch Midas, Gt, JD, jag and Oscar (boss of the tank) and was thinking of add another Oscar but had some concerns
I have a tiger Oscar he is 6month old he eat only dry shrimp if I feed him pellets he is not eating 2 days once i ill give him boilled chicken and liver is that correct
Some fish don't take to certain types of foods easily. It could just be the brand of pellet, or he may be used to getting the shrimp so he could be a bit suborn in taking the pelleted foods. Oscars often eat just about everything they can when hungry. I've never had any issues feeding mine. There are two schools of thought here - keep feeding the pellets until he gets hungry enough to eat them. Second - switch to something he will eat. Every fish is unique. I know I have some fish, if I give them a food they don't like they will just starve to death. You could try switching the brand of pellets too (I know that gets expensive though). Maybe just buy a small container to see if he will eat it?

@@PrimeTimeAquatics 👊🏽 hey Jason just started up a channel please check it out. Thanks
omg there a lovely i 149 uk gallons tank and looking so get oscars and my dad had when i was growing up and i always wanted to have them in my front cos there relaxing to watch great video different help me out thanks
Appreciate you watching!
I have 2 Oscars with an Geophagus and an Gouldsaum in my 145g tank and they seems to get along good. My Gouldsaum is the most agressive fish in that tank but its not an problem so iam happy about that
I could see that mix working. : -)
Awesome video and Thanks for Sharing. My Oscar that I named Big Al can read too lol.
I’m growing a few out in a 4 footer. Bit aggressive at the moment as there harassing my Saratoga lol. Can’t wait to see em get 12 inch plus
That's because you should not even have one in a four footer, did you listen to the video?
There going in a huge set up in December. I know how big they get man.
Nice man u hit that nail.
Awesome fishes 👍
I have a Polypterus (Lung Fish) with my two Oscars. I almost got a Rope Fish the other day but they were already all sold :( I would like to have a pangasius or 2 with my Oscars. Thoughts? Would that work out? I love Pangasius for their rather chilled manner of swimming up and down. I don't want that to stress or annoy my Oscars though...
The pairing would be fine. I wouldn’t keep that fish in anything less than about a 18-20ft tank. I’ve seen them get at least 4ft long and extremely round and somewhat tall - they are extremely large fish.
The ending was epic!
I totally agree about the smaller pellets
I had some jumbo food sticks I got for free and they just shredded those things - little pieces going everywhere. Not cool!
I have a 100 gallon bow front tank and and I'd really like to breed my oscar but still want some tank mates to add a little more color and activity to the tank but dont know what would be acceptable to add
Anything you add would eat oscar babies or be killed by the oscars when they form a breeding pair.
I can’t believe you were surprised when the Oscar ate the crawdad That’s one of their main food sources in the wild💯
Haha. I wasn’t surprised so much that they ate them, just how small the Oscars were when they tried to eat a huge crayfish!
i have lots of thanks, and i see lots of different thinks. I have a Spar 75, would 1 oscar sit happily? or should i try a Flowerhorn?
It could probably grow out in a 75, but you would probably want to move it at some point to a larger tank.
I wonder if they would be less messy if you feed them shrimp and other more solid foods
I got mine from a LFS, and they are great!
i always breed my own feeder fish
I have a pair of oscars and the big one is pinning the smaller one in one corner once inna whiten they lip lock but other than that the big one typically just nudging the side of the small one the small one typically doesn’t come out of the corner and allows the big one free range of the tank when the nudging occurs it’s very gentle and sometimes the smaller one will shake little is this the big one seems to be obsessed with the smaller one i had the smaller one first and it was the aggressor at first but seems like the bigger one has now become the aggressor No bite marks / no fin tearing but is this .. bullying ? Or mating behavior ?
It sounds more like bullying?
Great advice
Thank you!
I kept African 3 claw frogs with my two Oscars . Occasionally in when in a bad mood they would goose a frogs butt. They never hurt them though .
I'm not sure what it is about heaters that sets the aggression off in some Oscars, I've had a few over the years that took a dislike to the glass tubes haha
Fish can be weird like that. : -)
so having no gravel should be easier and healthier for the fish ?
I prefer to have some type of substrate in all my tanks.
I have a couple growing out in a 75 gallon now. Moving them to a 210 in a few months.
That will be awesome!
Temperament wise they can get along, but sometimes the diet can be hard to deal with.
Please update us on this beautiful red Oscar. I love this fish so much.
I showed it off in fish room tour part 1 2021! :-)
I think it did in my case because they grew up together, but you never know long term.
should i leave the light on at night when breeding oscar??
Great question - I don't but I do leave some type of very dim room light on so they can at least see another fish coming into the area to snack on babies.
Is it okay to breed them in (24/15/15) 25gallon tank?
I would make sure it has at least a 6ft tank and feed normally.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics i have a 150 gallon with him in it. I'm worried though because of how small he is. and i feed him twice a day
I actually have and oranda and a black moor that pretty much school with my Oscar's. The Oscars are only about 6 inches now. And the oranda and black moor will be moved to my koi pond soon
Nice fish
Thank you!
great videos man.
Thank you!
My large Oscar who I had to give away when pregnant as couldn't look after it properly use to get a pinki mouse once a week it was huge ... I had pet snakes so had frozen mice for the snakes that were brought frozen and I defrosted them etc 😂
Wow nice.
How do you take care of water circulation with just sponge filters?
They do an adequate job on their own.
I was trying to bring a worm to her a little while ago, and she ignored the worm and attacked my hand 😂
I love them.
I've had oscars do the same. Leave guppies alone in a tank that were there before the oscar and eat anything else that was small enough afterwards. So weird. Sounds like you may have a pair!
Prime Time Aquatics
I’m hoping it’s a same-sex pair like I had before.
After the blind one passed away, I discovered she had eggs in her ☹️
I coulda sworn it was a male/female pair with how they interacted, but I was wrong.
Her new friend is still pretty young, maybe around 7-8”, and has recently discovered that the 12” Vieja syns/ flowrhorn hybrid is a pushover 🤣
I’m planning on moving my biggies outside to a 720gal fiberglass tank with a window in the coming month.
At 650 gallons - you would probably have the highest likelihood of success.
Since this is an old video idk if ill get a response but could I keep an Oscar pair in an overfiltered 90 gallon long term or is that too small?
I prefer a 6ft tank long term.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics OK thank you! Probably will not go for Oscars then and turn it into a reef
Mine laid eggs yesterday and now they’re gone. What should I do next time?
Are there any scavengers in the tank like plecos or catfish? Any other fish? It's crazy how sneaky other fish can be - get in and eat the eggs. Sometimes it helps to leave a dim room light on so the parents guarding the eggs can see a threat coming.
Yea a Texas cichlid was in there but now removed
They look very healthy.
Thank you! It's funny going back to this video and seeing how small they were when we recorded this.
125 is a great tank for a pair
Thank you very informative!!!
Thank you! Hope it helped
For me I have some oscars and it’s with a fire mouth and green terror and Jack Dempsey and they’re doing very good
What is your thoughts on an oscar with a flowerhorn? I've had a couple haps in with my flower horn while I remodeled their tank and Pebbles ( FH) did just fine with ignoring them for the most part. He's about 5 inches and a gentle giant and I just ordered an Oscar . I have a set up to put him alone but if possible I'd like to give pebbles a budddy . thoughts ?
My guess is the flowerhorn will eventually kill the oscar?
Btw beautiful pair of oscars you got there
It can't be that tough to get rid of additional oscar babies... One can always feed them to bigger fish as feeder... Right???
Sure. As long as the bigger fish want to spend the energy to catch. : -)
Very nice pets !!!
Thank you!
I have a black tiger Oscar and an albino tiger Oscar fish. Is it on to put an angel fish in the tank with them?
I’m not sure about your set-up, but with mine I think the Oscars would be too active for angels and they would probably eat all the food before the angels got any.
Really considering oscars for their personalities and have a 90 gallon tank cycling. Wanting to do 1, but would 2 be pushing it? Wouldn't do anymore than that in a 90 for sure.
Ya, two might be pushing it a little. Mine are so big now I couldn’t get them in a 75 (same foot print as a 90). Hope this helps!
That's for the prompt reply! I want what's happiest for the fish, so we'll do one and a few acara I think! Thanks for the input!
What gallon tank should I house my single juevenile? Thanks
I started mine out in a 55 gallon, but they needed a larger tank within a few months.
Omg thanks for replying thanks for the advice 🤩
Great video, I was wondering what type of artificial plants are In the tank I would like to get a few for my 90gallon
gentleblkthug It’s been a while, but I think they were Aquatop brand?
You cannot put a few in a 90 gallon
My Oscar pair just laid a huge clutch and I don't know what to do...! I have cichlids in my tank also and I'm sure theyll eat the fries up if the eggs survive... I don't the space nor the time to set up another tank
If you don't want to raise them just leave them alone. They will become fish food for everyone else. There isn't a very strong market for Oscar fry because they have so many fry.
Iv been wanting to get an Oscar for a very long time, I have a 75 gallon aquarium sitting empty in my living room !!!
Same
Help. I have two oscars but can’t tell if they are male or female they are full size about 12 in long. Had them about 3 years. But they have never had babies. They do every thing that a male and female would do. But no eggs. ..any ideas ..?!
The only way I can tell them apart is when they start breeding, based on which fish is laying the eggs. : -)
When do they start to get their colour...
Usually by the time they are 2"
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I've got three tigers and four albino they are around 3 to 4" but still no colour....any suggestions please...
Greatt video!!.. is it wise/safe to add two Oscars in community ca/sa cichlids tank 150 plus tank ?
It depends on the other fish. If they are on the more aggressive side the new oscars might get bullied. If you try it I would have a back up plan just in case.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics there all juveniles 3-4inch Midas, Gt, JD, jag and Oscar (boss of the tank) and was thinking of add another Oscar but had some concerns
It's hard to say for sure.
Whoa!
Oscars are king 🐠🤓
what is the biggest fish i could put in a 75
It's not just the size of the fish but also it's activity level, aggression towards other fish and tank mates.
Prime Time Aquatics thank u so can I feed him two days once a boilled chicken and liver because I won't feed him any live foods
I've never tried that so I can't really say for sure.
Amazing video I am your new subscribers
Awesome! Thanks for being here. : -)
