I really enjoyed this video. Ghouls n Ghosts for the Sega Genesis is my all time favorite game. I'm 41 so i was pretty young when it released. The first time i snuck into my older brothers room to play his new game system Ghouls n Ghosts was the game in the genesis. The game absolutely blew my young mind. I still have a huge amount of nostalgia for this game. It was the first video game i ever completed. I now own every version of Ghouls n Ghosts there is including the psp games. I can still walk right through the genesis version easily from memory. The super Nintendo version Im still working on since i first started playing it 20+ years ago. I was a Sega Genesis kid so got a late start on the snes one. I play one version or another at least once a year and still really enjoy the genesis version the most. I've been gaming since i was very young and in my 35years of video games no game has blown my hair back like Ghouls n Ghosts did. Thank you for the video.

Great video! Talk about a tough game and series, I'm still haunted by having Ghosts 'n Goblins on NES as a kid.

Thanks 😃, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Definitely one of the toughest game series. There are probably people of a certain age who were traumatised by the toughness of Ghosts n Goblins 😂, it was relentlessly tough.

Super ghouls n ghosts was my childhood basicly, I got a snes with that and SF2, and only had these two games for years. Still love them and play them often even over 40.

Growing up the only time we’d get consoles or games was on birthdays or Christmas, apart from that we had to either borrow games from mates or rent them. I’m in my 40s too and still gaming, seeing the newer games makes you appreciate how much playability the older games had to have to make up for the graphical limitations, great days! 😃👍

I had almost the same experience as you. I played In a small arcade that was part of a gymnasium it had Ghosts N' Ghouls and Street Fighter the World Warrior.

Can't believe there hasn't been a metroidvania of this series.

You can definitely see that the Genesis does what Nintendon't - Clearly the big N needs some blast processing to stop that incessant slowdown.
    Good vid, appreciate the effort.
I had it on cassette with the Spectrum 128k... I think that would have been my first experience of the series.
Think we are probably the same or close to the same age (turned 40 last week). For my local swimming baths wayyyyy back in the day it was Turtles (not sure if it was the first or second) and Wonderboy.

SGnG as much as I love it, clearly needed a bit more refining to sort out that slow down.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! 😃
Yep I be in my 40s and still gaming! Wonderboy was another game they had at one point at my swimming baths, Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja was also there at one point 😃.

Getting this on my Megadrive was a big deal. It was the first truly ( as far as I was concerned) arcade perfect experience in my bedroom. And what a monster it was.

It was such an impressive conversion, definitely a case of the arcade experience in the home 😃

Grew up w/Super on my dad's SNES in the early 2000s. Was the one game my brother's and I said was too hard. One day I discovered the easy mode and extra lives (I was wicked young, I only noticed the options since Castlevania 4 had a menu too). I played over and over, finished the first run, and decided to switch to normal mode. Could only get as far as the second loop Ice world. To this day I've always wanted to complete it yet haven't say down to continue where childhood me left off.

It is the souls-game before souls games were a thing. Punishingly hard but you keep coming back to it 😃

One of my favourites games ever and you should try Cursed Castilla EX and Battle Princess Madelyn if you haven't as they were inspired by Ghouls and Ghosts.

I got Ghouls n' Ghosts with my Sega Genesis on Christmas Eve of 1989 and man did I feel incredibly lucky. I had the Nes port of the first and I hated it...I was so happy to never have to return to it again.
Addendum- Had Yuji Naka decided to go with a slightly bigger ROM size it could have very well been arcade perfect. That really is the big difference between the Supergrafx port and Genesis one.
Addendum- Christmas at my homes (divorced parents) were always about consoles as that's when I got them. Getting a console for some strange reason was out of the question for birthdays. I got my Snes in 1991 at Christmas with Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. What a game...but it will never be as good as Ghouls n' Ghosts for me. That slowdown is a killer for me...also I was a bit miffed it didn't get a Genesis release as well. The Genesis is more than capable of emulating every effect the Snes can including Mode 7 through software scaling. Check out Kawasaki Superbike Challenge and Red Zone for examples of what they were doing with a Genesis without helper chips.

Here in Canada, I loved and played the arcade version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts back in the early 1990's. I got good at it and could beat it with 1 credit every time. It's not that hard for me.
I also played the Sega Genesis (a.k.a. the Mega Drive) version and beat that as well.
I played Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but could never get past the water stage so I gave up.
Ironically (as shown in your video), I also beat 1942 and Double Dragon in the arcade with 1 credit.

You talk about early Mega Drive games having better sounds. I wonder, could that be specifically because of either the rise of GEMS, and/or the inferior soundchips in later console revisions? 🤔
