While I do appreciate your posting the lyrics, I do find that almost all of the time, Jon's diction is spot on. I don't usually have any trouble understanding him. Unlike most of today's vocalists, who cuddle the mic with both hands so you can't see what they're singing.

The Battle of Shiroyama took place on 24 September 1877, in Kagoshima, Japan. It was the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion, where the heavily outnumbered samurai under Saigō Takamori made their last stand against Imperial Japanese Army troops under the command of Generals Yamagata Aritomo and Kawamura Sumiyoshi.
24 September 1877, Saigō Takamori and some 500 Samurai faced some 30,000 soldiers of the Imperial Army. In the battle, Takamori was mortally wounded. He committed seppuku, his remains hidden but were eventually found. What was left of his Samurai did a final charge towards the Imperial lines and were cut down. The film 'Last Samurai' is loosely based around this rebellion, the Satsuma Rebellion. Today, Saigo Takamori is revered as a hero in Japan as a symbol of the Last True Samurai.

Swords out and charge the enemy - there was no hope of victory and they did not want to surrender, even when it was an option. That is what makes the story epic and remembered/honored to this day in Japan. Simply, that was the end of that specific culture, few remained - might as well go out in a blaze of glory. Otherwise, they'd just be another small rebellion that happened in those times and no one would even give it any special attention.

The Battle of Shiroyama took place on 24 September 1877, in Kagoshima, Japan. It was the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion, where the heavily outnumbered samurai under Saigō Takamori made their last stand against Imperial Japanese Army troops under the command of Generals Yamagata Aritomo and Kawamura Sumiyoshi.
24 September 1877, Saigō Takamori and some 500 Samurai faced some 30,000 soldiers of the Imperial Army. In the battle, Takamori was mortally wounded. He committed seppuku, his remains hidden but were eventually found. What was left of his Samurai did a final charge towards the Imperial lines and were cut down. The film 'Last Samurai' is loosely based around this rebellion, the Satsuma Rebellion. Today, Saigo Takamori is revered as a hero in Japan as a symbol of the Last True Samurai.

The battle and the lead up to it were actually much weirder and interesting than this admittedly amusing memey comment.
The Samurai were probably among the very first warriors to adopt the gun en masse. By the Imjin war in 1590 Japan was building more guns per capita than anywhere else in the world. The idea the Samurai charged with swords is a meme.

It's always strange listening to this song and not hearing the ending. On the youtube video, right at the end, hearing "IN THE NAME OF GOOOOOD!" as the lyric video previews Last Stand lol. That always pops in my head no matter where I hear the song.

The Samurai in the revolt were trained in the use of Heavy artillery, Gatling rotary guns and Rifles, they even won some sieges early on. They were just horribly outnumbered by the conscripts of the Japanese Army

@@JimBob-qj2ye Yes to all, but that last charge when only 500 were left, was indeed done to honor the Bushido. Swords out and charge the enemy - there was no hope of victory and they did not want to surrender, even when it was an option. That is what makes the story epic and remembered/honored to this day in Japan. Simply, that was the end of that specific culture, few remained - might as well go out in a blaze of glory.
Otherwise, they'd just be another small rebellion that happened in those times and no one would even give it any special attention.
