Dr. Shade and Pharmacist Chinelo, here,in the USA, to train as a Pharmacist, you need: Physics, CHEMISTRY, Biology and Mathematics; plus other courses or subjects, as it is called in Nigeria. You need Biology because in your second year and third year in pharmacy school, you have to take: Biochemistry (Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic acids), Microbiology and Immunology. This is because some Pharmacist often decide to go for a Masters or Doctorate degrees in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, etc. As things are now in the USA, one needs a Bachelor's degree and the PCAT (Pharmacy College Admissions Test) to apply for admission into the Pharmacy program.
Pharm Chinelo was my classmate and she is a smart pharmacist😁 The recent trend in pharmacy practice is a paradigm shift to a patient focused practice. So a lot of innovations has been put in to advance pharmaceutical care in Nigeria. I'll like to mention the approval of Pharmacy consultancy in Nigeria. Initially a Pharmacist is supposed to know every aspect of drug related issues. But with the consulting practice you can decide to specialize in oncology pharmacy, Antibiotics, Skin pharmacy or any speciality of interest. I am not really sure about the process it takes to become a consultant pharmacist in Nigeria but I think you will need a combination of Masters in clinical pharmacy and a residency with the West African Postgraduate college of Pharmacy to achieve the consultant cadre. Thanks
My Chinelo! Such a delightful soul.
