I was skeptical that something on this album would live up to "Don't Shut Me Down". It's insane how good this song is. I think a lot of this album is a "retrospective", going through Abba's different styles and different musical styles of the world, too. I feel like this is definitely the one that pays tribute to "The Visitors", my favorite album of theirs. The darker subject matter, taking place after the divorce, and heavy emphasis on synthesizers convinces me. The fact that it ends on the signature opening notes of SOS is not just a cool easter egg, but also thematically ties in since that was their first big single about trouble in their marriage. Spectacular.

Its like being put in a time machine. One women in the lead, while the other women perfectly completes it. And from time to time the boys show up and include their call and response singing. And the whole singing is accompanied by perfectly arranged synthie sounds. A mixture of all the recipes that made ABBA great, succesful and timeless. This is master class when it comes to pop music.

Funny how quickly it takes me
Right back to our first date
    Have I lost her forever?
I'll keep an eye on my Dan
    I'm a loving man
Your know that I'll never upset him
I'll keep an eye on my Dan
    And I won't forget you'll be here
    On Sunday to get him.
It's just incredible how ABBA tells us this history's other side using backing vocals - pure geniuses.

These four people have come back together, and used their experiences of divorce to create such a beautiful and incredibly powerful song. A huge thank you ABBA for creating this track, which is an instant classic that deserves to be added to their repertoire, but also a track that flies straight to my heart like an arrow xx

I only needed to hear the first two seconds of the song to know it would be a banger. It's so unique too that the lyrics is so serious but the song is so catchy, but you can still feel the darkness in it. Maybe the music is more upbeat because of the stress and anxiety the mom feels, it feels very chaotic in a way.

Have to love the last few bars of this song. When ABBA were about. I wasn't even born. So, in 1975, of course your to young to know anything. I'd dance to ABBA on what we call ' The Golden Hour ' on our radio station. I was 7 then. Fast Forward so many years ABBA Gold and More ABBA Gold came out. Fast Forward more years, the musical and movie came out. Seen both. But! Back in the early 2000's I seen an interview with the boys. They said ......... Theres more to come. I've waited 18 years since that day. I was on and ordered the new Album on Vynal right away.

In a world that often has little joy, the return of ABBA is like the sun coming out from behind the clouds. I know many have sniped about this being a rehash of old stuff masking as new material, but I think most of us fall immediately under the magic of the joyous vocals and uplifting classic ABBA sound. Familiar yet new at the same time, instantly lodged in your brain like any classic ABBA song. We were always blessed to have ABBA, and we are doubly blessed to live through their miraculous return, and to hear them sound just as great - if not better - than ever. I love these people, even if I will never know them, from the bottom of my heart. I only pray they don't disappear on us after this album...this world (actually, any world) will always, always, always need ABBA!

    • @clairefacer9690

They are story tellers, not having to use their group name as a lyric filler (like a lot of more recent artist do). Nor do they have a hook that keeps repeating continually. They do sometimes have questionable lyrics "as smug as a cat" etc -but then I have 4 cats and tbh that line is as accurate a description as there ever will be. I didn't expect it in a ppp song - but after initial shock I have to say it works! They write in a foreign language and use English turns of phrase very successfully in context which is amazing in itself especially as English is one of the hardest languages to learn. All 4 of them are proper musicians, songwriters and lyricists. Not many of today's acts have that ability. Go ABBA! My 6 yr old who goes to her Dad's each week and has suffered separation anxiety has been helped so much by this song and absolutely adores it!

This song clearly shows the changes in mindset nowadays. How people easily change to co-parenting now. How they no longer fight for relationships. And after separation, remember they still kind of carry some love for their ex. But our society doesn't accept mistakes. So there is no time and place for regret. You all recognized the 'Fernando' riff at the end to reflect ? To accept you can still make mistakes?

If ABBA has not changed their tunes their critics have not changed their tunes either. The same things the critics are saying about ABBA's music today they were saying 40 years ago. The names of the critics will not be remembered next week even but I think 50 years from now people will still be listening to ABBA! The best music and most enduring music is hypnotic in nature. Hypnotic in a good and gentle way. It wakens up the good serotonin. I leave the more difficult music to those hellbent on wanting music to reflect their adolescent angst or overall anxiety and depression or artistic purity. The criticisms of ABBA today are no more original than the criticisms of the past. If critics want ABBA to up their game the critics need to as well.

Wonderful statement Ken! The music consists of harmonious sounds, the voices are soothing for ears and soul. It is partly church music or like caresses. No compulsion to imitate today's aggressive sound and disharmonious sounds with their aggressive yelling. ABBA is incomparable and completely independent art. The music of people's hearts. Listening to ABBA means having the courage to want to continue living.

Its one of the more strange mysterious songs like "the day before you came".
On the first view its about a so common situation: separated mum brings boy to dad, they share the education. the situation seems clear.- but there is a second level of a hidden truth behind, an insecurity abour the decision made which expresses in that repeated sentence. the boy is what still and always will connect them. he is the manifeststion of their love. often things arent as clear as they see..so deepgoing.just wonderful!

I just heard the complete album, and the melancholic music of this song (on this rainy day in a corner of Argentina) caught me hopelessly. The lyrics, surprisingly, took it to a higher level. It feels autobiographical (about them), but it sure touches the hearts of many couples who have left the heartbreaking imprint of their love on a child.
