THANK YOU so much for this quick and helpful tutorial. I've owned 2 of these machines for 13 yrs. (long boring story) and no books came with them. Looked for videos but no progress. So I bought a new PAFF (actually Dear Hubbs bought it) so now my 7+8 yr old Granddaughter are now sewing .... YEP! I had 4 daughters and not until 2 yrs. ago none were EVER interested. So I gave her my Bernina 930. And now I'm thinking of training the littles (7+8yo) on the Designer 1's. They have only had 2 lessons with me but it's tough to share a machine. So I'll get the designer 1's serviced and set them up here in my tiny sewing room. AFTER I give a few more lessons and am confident in their interest and abilities. So excited! 😊💜
Thank you so much for the video, just won this machine on e bay. It is light years beyond my 40 year old basic singer sewing machine. Appreciate you taking the time to do this for others. Hugs.
Hope they were a good help... Hopefully you found some peace in using the machine - Blessings to you! So sorry to hear about your mom! She must have loved sewing and embroidery if she had one of these! :)
Thomas Greene the designer 1 is a very cool machine. Some of the newer machines have the features your designer has. The embroidery feature is pretty cool. I have had mine for many years. Other than a replacement touch screen pad, it has worked flawlessly.
Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have this machine a log time but rarely use it. The issue is the bobbin. I believe it is the tension, stitches on the underside are all mangled. Could you please tell me if you know, how I can correct this? Many thanks. I am trying to make some masks for our local hospital and am getting really frustrated. Victoria
You may be using bad or old thread! It seems in my 65 years of sewing that the majority of threads never improve! I usually buy mine in sewing shops that are kind of expensive, but they don’t shred!
Have a Husqvana viking designer 1 have read the manual lots of times & it’s does help not all . I want to embroidery items . Do you have a links to help
Designer 1’s are not up grading the machines any more that use floppy discs! They don’t even sell floppy’s any more that I know of! You can’t embroider with out a disc in the machine & if it doesn’t work that means the Proms are useless & sewing will be all you can do! Unless you want to pay over $8000.00 for a new machine, then you would have to buy the the soft ware that’s probably $8000.00 by now & they don’t sell them in most sewing shops!
I have inherited a designer 1 from my aunt but do not have the discs for embroidery. can anyone help me with where I can get any. Husqvana could not help.
Could you please repost the embroidery videos. It looks like video 2 is missing which is the start of the embroidery unit. Since this machine is old I cannot find any training materials for it. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.
It may be inserted in the wrong way. The logo needs to be on the top! Since you just bought your Designer 1 recently, the bobbin may be useless! They do wear out because the green color has something to do with how it works …it reads it to make sure it’s running correctly. Or you could be using the wrong bobbin!
Hi I am using the Designer I sewing machine and would like to learn how to embroider with it. Do you have any links to where I might go to learn. Thank you in advance
Today is the first day I’ve actually taken out the sewing machine that my husband bought me. I am following the steps that you have provided but at the end when I fix and then cut the thread, I’m still left with a tiny bit of thread at the end. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?
I did a search to find help with my Designer I and thread bunching up in the bobbin. I checked how it was threaded, put in a new needle. Didn't get a perfectly wound bobbin. Had a small loop in bobbin. Very exasperating. Music is very distracting.
thank you...i didnt even realize the video was still up! we had to get rid of this last year! poor wife is still sad! blessings and thank you for the kind comment!
Why did you need to get rid of it? I had this machine for 12 years and it worked pretty well, aside from the screen needing to be replaced twice. I ended up trading it in on a gently used Viking Designer Diamond in 2014, which I absolutely love.
I have a designer 11.but it seems to have lost its memory wont bring up anything no stitches like zig zag won’t read my d cards .its gin shop trying to get it sorted .not h@ving much luck with it at all . I have lots of lovely cards so hoping they apc@n fin
I need some answers! I bought a Designer 1 in 2003! Never ever had a problem! I always took my machine to the same repair shop for cleaning etc. No problems what so ever! My favorite place closed & the owners retired! I found a new place that is close to where I live! I took it for just the normal servicing! The lady owner kept quizzing me about the machine! She tells me that I was using the wrong needle Even though I bought them from her! She asked about my embroidery designs & I told her that my son gave me a nice selection of them for my birthday! She then stopped talking to me & told me she will call me when it’s finished! The very next day she calls to tell me I can only use the machine for sewing no embroideries at all! She tells me that the “grounding” wire has been pulled out & they can’t put it back in & if I use it the machine will catch fire or explode! Then she tries to sell me a new machine that I can not afford! She also told me the sewing part will fail soon because the proms are out dated & can’t be updated any more! She had a real hissy fit because I didn’t want to buy a new machine! I took it to another place & that place couldn’t find my machine after I waited for their call for a month! They gave it to another lady but she had the honesty to bring it back! That store told me my machine was OK! That guy never even opened the machine! I had tape on it to prove it! I also put my name on the machine as well!! I’m going to take it to another place that I’ve heard good things about! We’ll see what happens there! What I want to know ….does any one know about this ground wire? I would think if the machine is grounded, then it should cover both the sewing & the embroidery! The machine has one plug..I would think if two places were independently grounded they would need two electrical cords! I’m afraid to use the machine! Has any one had a problem like this or have I just been going to the wrong sewing shops that are run by people who will say anything to sell a new machine? Any info would help! Thank you!
I don’t use it! I do it the old fashion way…besides that…it broke after I used it a few times plus it didn’t even get the thread in the needle any way!!
Well! If you have a Designer 1, your out of luck! I have one that I bought in 2003 & it’s totally obsolete! You can no longer even get parts for it! Also since my machine is so old, each time I take it in for servicing they try & sell me a brand new machine, which costs around $10,000.00 plus around $6,000.00 for the software! I have found the older my machine gets the rudder the repair shops get! The last time I took it in for its regular servicing which was a month ago, my machine was destroyed! They tried to tell me that the “ground wire” for the embroidery part of the machine was pulled out & can’t be replaced because no parts are available any more! That machine worked fine when I brought it in! It just needed cleaning & adjustments! Now it won’t even sew! They charged me $128.00 & did nothing! I was going to a really great little sewing shop! The man who owned it could fix anything plus he had spare parts for dozens of different machines & he would fix your machine while you waited... he closed up his shop & retired in December! I have had to deal with several really nasty people in these sewing machine stores! No one wants to fix mine or service it! Now that it’s totally ruined I can’t even sew on it! I would love to tell the name of that shop but I’m sure I would get in trouble! You can no longer even get programs for that machine! Now I have 4 useless hoops, a continuous hoop, a ball cap hoop, & over 600 patterns that are useless now that no one can fix it! I just can’t believe what lengths these sewing machine sales people will go to to sell sewing machines at such ridiculously high prices & think nothing of ruining someone’s machine! If you know computers you might be able to figure out how to use your moms machine! I never really got the hang of mine, but I was able to do a lot of embroidery & the sewing stitches were great! I wasn’t in to all the customizing. I’m so angry with that shop I took my machine to! Now I have a useless piece of junk! I’m going to start looking at Brother sewing & embroidery machines! They aren’t as elaborate as the Designer 1 but they are a whole lot cheaper! If you get your machine figured out, let me know! I’ll sell you my hoops & other accessories! But you must be aware, these machines are considered totally obsolete & if anything goes wrong you can’t get parts for it plus the boards in it will go out one of these days & then it will be garbage! I cried when I found out how my machine was ruined! I had wanted an embroidery machine since I saw the first Singer Athena 2000, in the window of a Singer shop in the early 1970’s! Good luck!
There only angry because Jesus is exalted as being alive in the music. He already told us many years ago that this was going to happen. Just another prophecy fulfilled. Get prepared. It's only going to get worse, but we will be leaving soon. Then, they won't have to hear that name again. However, one day there knee WILL bow and their tongues WILL confess JESUS IS LORD!
This could have been a nice video but background music is distracting and annoying. Why do people insist on music. Is there music in an instructional class room?
Love the music. Keep playing it. Could you plz show how to wind a bobbin? Just got this machine (used) and need to watch how to do it. I’m a visual learner. Thnx for any help you can give.

I needed a refresher course for my Designer 1. I have not used it in years. Hope I can find more of your videos. Thank you bunches.
I like the music in the background! I have a Designer I also....love it!

I think that is normal. That is how my machine has always done it.

I can not get my bottom tension right no matter what. Have no clue as to what I am doing wrong.
How do I work the back stitch?
There’s a curved arrow near the start stop button. Push and hold to reverse, push twice and it stays in reverse.
Just found this video, but I need one on appliqué. Do you have one? TIA
How do you use the needle threader???
I don’t use it! I do it the old fashion way…besides that…it broke after I used it a few times plus it didn’t even get the thread in the needle any way!!
what does the "fix" feature do?? is it like a backstitch??
Yes
Do you have any free motion quilting videos for the designer I?
The “music” is extremely distracting!
You never mention how to adjust tension, which is a HUGE part of how you learn your machine
