The Old Triangle was, in no particular order, Alcohol, Coffee, and Tobacco.
      Fascinating how tobacco became popular.
When the British came to Virginia, they noticed the Native Americans smoking tobacco.
Since the Brits were sent to find materials for England to prosper, and they came up empty-handed, they returned with tobacco.
Tobacco became a gimmick , sold to the "elite" as the societal separator; a product only the very affluent and rich partook in.
It was marketed as snuff for the ladies and as smokeable for the gents.
" Hey everybody, look at me".

Okay, so the problem is that these sweet sugary foods and drinks are slowly being replaced with similar versions using a mix of artificial sweeteners. It's to the point where nearly every low calorie food has artificial sweeteners. We're eating and drinking globs of this stuff every day in the US, yet the long-term safety at high doses is still somewhat unknown.
There ARE effective NATURAL no and low-calorie sweeteners available, it's just that manufacturers continue to use the fake ones (Ace K, sucralose, etc.). Erythritol with monk fruit is 100% natural and it takes and feels like sugar. It doesn't really impact the consistency of foods and beverages the way that, say, stevia does. There's also xylitol which is natural and sweet but it can cause major GI issues even in moderate doses.
I hope more companies embrace erythritol + monk fruit instead of adding to the already giant selections of foods and drinks stuffed with artificial sweeteners. Even erythritol + monk fruit + low dose sucrose.

Unfortunately the food industry knows the addictive power of their product and specifically markets it to poorer and more vulnerable people. These products are always cheaper than healthier alternatives, like fruits, and require less preparation so poorer families end up purchasing a lot of processed foods to save time and money. They end up paying for it out the nose once they develop diabetes or other heath issues. This is why food deserts are such a problem in the US.

You can eat healthy for cheap. It just takes a little discipline because you have to prepare your own food from scratch. Dried legumes, rice, fresh produce, fresh meat (esp. chicken and pork), dairy, and eggs are all relatively inexpensive. Food deserts happen because of crime. Stop robbing the grocery stores and maybe they won’t pack up and leave.

Silliest thing I've ever heard. A basic understanding of nutrition (NOT some random internet guru's opinion of it), just actual basic physiology...and you'll realize that nothing is inherently wrong with sugar. If you can't control your intake of it, fine, but your body NEEDS sugar. It needs it so bad that it will just create it out of other macro-nutrients if you don't eat any. Saying you are addicted to sugar is like saying you're addicted to oxygen. You just eat too much and too many foods are not satiating. You have to work a lot harder to get fat off chicken breast and rice (damn near sugar by the way) than you do mac n' cheese and chicken tenders. And don't tell me it's too expensive to eat healthy. A "meal" from wendy's and a pound of steak are basically the same price where I live. Goofy. Can't believe it's still a thing with all the information available to people.

@@lynx9610 The sugar in an apple is composed of natural fructose and glucose (sucrose), while the sugar in a coke is high fructose corn syrup. There's also the matter of nutrient density. Unlike coke, apples are packed with fiber and vitamins. Apples have a lower glycemic index, unlike coke, which will spike your GI levels, contributing to diabetes and other obesity related illnesses. I have absolutely nothing against drinking coke. Just make sure you don't drink often. Nothing wrong with one or two cokes a week.

So this is going to go against this piece a bit and and a lot of other comments but I think there are 2 types of sugar one of which I think is overall "better" for you. Ultra processed and not. Ultra processed like pop tarts, cereals, soda, "fruit snacks" etc. Fake, chemically driven, lab created foods...than there are sugary things things like maple syrup, home made ice cream, and dark chocolate. The latter in my opinion is much better for you overall if eaten in moderation. The scare tactic of "never have!" doesn't work for most people. They usually crash when completely abstaining. Just lessen your intake, watch the source of your sugar and eat good whole foods 90% of the time and indulge once in a blue moon. I've managed to maintain a healthy weight and blood levels doing it this way. I just think the broad sweeping, DON'T EVER HAVE that's taking over is going to backfire for a lot of people once they fall of the wagon.
