The Sam videos just keep coming...just what I need on a sorely-needed mental health day. Thanks for letting us vicariously enjoy your adventures, my friend. Seeing dreams achieved engenders hope and joy.
12:49 60W While recognizing that space on a sailboat is at a premium, at 60W that’s pretty small! My 2-door 7.5CF top freezer 120VAC fridge is not ginormous, but it’s “big enough” for my 25’ off-grid RV and it also only uses 60W. I would rather have more space if I was going to be out at sea for weeks on end, and I would try to figure out how to keep 1500W or so of solar panels. Solves a lot of problems that way.
We all have days like that,no real harm done and it's behind you now.you cast off in your own good time, don't feel pressured, your taking on a big step that demands respect and 100% concentration.best wishes for you Sam.
Great adventure! Great progress! For the port screens, I'd be tempted to try to print just the frame with a channel around the perimeter to hold standard hardware store screen material - retained by standard rubber spline...
Good luck Sam!!! You're an inspiration to us all! Be safe and enjoy yet another world adventure. We're all watching and rooting you on as you live your passion!!!
In the Atlantic the PFD is a MUST! sorry about the loss of the phone but as long as your ok, material things and be fixed or replaced... don't rush just be safe, that's the main thing.... I trust you've got the hose and quick disconnects i sent along to you as well.....safe journey my friend!
Sam, I've thoroughly enjoyed your videos showing your progress over the last few months! Your ingenuity, creativity, and patience are very impressive. I am looking forward to seeing you cross the Atlantic!
I have a chart plotter on a tablet with a waterproof case. I also have a chart plotter on an old phone and my new 'daily driver' phone. The tablet and back up phone / plotter never go outboard of the cockpit seats and the daily driver phone is never brought topsides at all. I rarely video or take stills but when I do it's with a 'faux-pro' in a water box and it's own life jacket. I would freak out if I lost my main phone over side. I have seen it happen to other people so many times. Sam ~ your videos are awesome ! :)
PLA is pretty good if u do 3-4 outer walls, when finished sand lightly and wash, when dry 1-2 coats primer then 2 top coats and it will usually protect it well
You're the man Sam. I didn't realize you were leaving so soon. Fair winds Skipper. And....YEAH... Zoe was back for the shakedown, heck yeah!! Looking forward to following your progress are you registered to a GPS site we can track?
I have a phone with a wide camera and it's super useful, specially for filming stuff out in sea I wonder, it makes you able to get way more immersed watching it. Also, nice gurka!
Definitely a shakedown cruise! Sorry about your phone. Luckily when I crossed the Pamlico Sound I just had to deal with crab pots and fog. That seemed to take forever motoring with a fowled prop only making 3-3.5 knots (barnacles from sitting in Hatteras NC for months)
Another great video, thanks for sharing. Make sure you take some time along the way to explore. Even though it is a small island Bermuda has some interesting sites and well you could spend a whole summer in the Azores, we did. Every island is a bit different and the people are very open and friendly. Cheers
Maybe you could make a cell phone tether and clip it like the old pocket watch theme, but to connect it to either you or the boat. That way, if, God forbid, you have a knockdown, the phone will stay with you and the boat. What will you be doing about food supplies? Dehydrated, canned, dry goods? When I go kayaking, I dehydrate meals like spaghetti that are nearly cooked. It only takes a few minutes to cook them up, or even put them in a thermos with hot water and let them rehydrate. Yum. A hiker’s box of dehydrated veggies from one of the big companies would make for good grub. Just wondering. Your fridge looks awesome. Please remember to leave “rested”, as there is so much to test. Lucky that you are a skilled sailor from your Pacific crossing. Smart that you are renting your building. Hope they are good tenants. Nice to see you with crew too. Such a bummer on the cell loss.
Bummer about the lost phone, and lost videos (i.e. lost Ad revenue to support your sailing!) We’re all excited for you Sam, stay safe and keep creating, and we’ll keep watching!!
Sorry about phone. I keep mine in a case with a ring to which I hook a 28 inch long ribbon which goes around my neck when I am boating. Same with car keys. I still loose untethered sunglasses and hats.
Sounds like you're lucky no-one got hurt or knocked overboard when you lost the main sheet and it tore the dorade box off 😳; please be safe and wear your PFDs! The phone is easy to replace (esp if you're using automatic iCloud backups) but there is only one Sam! 😃 Also, welcome back Zooey! 👋
I have dropped TWO iPhones into the water. BOTH times I had my phone in my top left shirt pocket and leaned over to tie the boat off to the dock. Don't feel bad, we learn from our mistakes.
I worry when I train all summer for a long bike ride to top off the months of riding. Cannot imagine what it must feel like to leave to solo sail across the Atlantic. Great fun to watch you prepare...two steps forward and one occasionally back. But you keep on inspiring. Safe travels.
That was one heck of a shakedown cruise Sam - very productive to find the weak links but stinks to have the losses. Great to see Zoey back on board. I wonder what she thought of the refurbished Pickled Herring? I love my Gil offshore gear as well. Thanks for sharing!
Quite a few sketchy issues that should be corrected before attempting major passage, especially in regards to the rigging. Those mast shrouds are inadequate. Several times in my life we waited for major storm near shore for a shake down after major renovations, then headed into it. Thing broke or were damaged and were able to repair once back in. Then we were ready for ocean crossings. Sam is such a likable guy, I’d hate to see him have severe problems or worse.
Get a water resistant pbone case, store that in a Pelican case , and keep phone below deck . One hand for yourself and the other hand for the boat ! Great job on re fit !
Sam, you have the resourcefulness and skills to overcome big challenges. But even more important, ou remain calm to focus on solutions. Excited for you to head out..but will miss those videos.
15k views and only 1.5k likes? Come on people! Give a like, grow the channel. Oh, if the ad is 30 seconds or less, let it play through. Give Sam that 1/100th of a cent. If we all do it it adds up. Let’s earn him a little extra spending money for some shore excursions wherever he’s going. Fair winds Sam. Looking forward to your sailing adventures. Have very much enjoyed the refit content.
I love your vidz, they are a great story of what Not to do to get ready for an atlantic crossing. GOOD LUCK and don't get hit by any hurricanes or large cruise ships.
Hello Sam thanks for sharing another good video it's a good thing those happen now close to shore so you can correct all of the issues sorry to hear about you losing your phone but at least you didn't go overboard anyway stay safe God bless you Sam and I love that new fridge you got that's nice anyways take care God bless be safe be waiting for you next video from Ray Garrett Roseville California USA
You know, some very inteligent people are in to space or other stuff thats so out of touch with reality or computers, etc... but same got into sailing, which you can do. And hes into it too.
Considering what you've done just in the past few months... a phone is a mighty small loss... easy fix. easier than what i've seen you do. PRESS ON MAN! PRESS ON!
Sam, please SLOW DOWN, to have a shroud come adrift in a moderate blow, means to me that you have compromised your usual acute attention to detail. It's no big deal if you miss making a blog or two, the boat, YOUR boat, must always come first. Time and Tide may not wait for no man, but there are two a day. I Can't wait for your voyage to begin, but I shall have to exercise patience. Keep up the good work Sam. Kind Regards, Barnacle Bern, SW Wales UK.
It's reassuring to me that even some of the brightest people on the planet will drop their phone in the ocean.
Your ability to keep calm with all of that happening is thoroughly impressive.
You must be new :-)
He is seriously like a duck. Water just beads off his back like nothing gets to him. Lol
@@worldhippie i can see the phone loss has bummed Sam...... and why wouldnt it !!☹
Zoë magic ...
Sam is the chillest guy on the planet. He’s the stoic master, and Zoe rocks. She’s down for the ride.
This is a REAL Reality Show !!! I love these videos. Safe travels across the Atlantic !
The Sam videos just keep coming...just what I need on a sorely-needed mental health day. Thanks for letting us vicariously enjoy your adventures, my friend. Seeing dreams achieved engenders hope and joy.
“Cascading Events”...sounds like a good name for a boat😁

Glad you got a good freezer I rewatched your Hawaii voyage the other day and the 2+ week old unrefrigerated cheese was slightly distressing.
Bummer on issues. Definitely a lesson for us all on the value of shakedowns. Sending Light and a virtual hug your way.
It will be interesting to see how much of this homemade equipment and 3D printed plastics is still intact when you arrive in Europe.
Welcome back Zooey! Thanks for akll the vids Sam. You got a great boat hope your adventuring goes as planned. !…
Mr Holmes you should talk about customs and their cost.
I recently got the same fridge for my land cruiser. Test ran it for 3 weeks. Worked great.
PLA is pretty good if u do 3-4 outer walls, when finished sand lightly and wash, when dry 1-2 coats primer then 2 top coats and it will usually protect it well
I really enjoy these day-by day videos. You've become one of my favorite TH-camrs.

And you are still smiling!
If it's going to happen, it's going to happen out there.
Ahhhh, preach it Captain Ron!

Great videos Man even better when you show more of Zoe😎😁😎 sail safe where we go when we go all

I have dropped TWO iPhones into the water. BOTH times I had my phone in my top left shirt pocket and leaned over to tie the boat off to the dock. Don't feel bad, we learn from our mistakes.
I guess that’s why it’s called a shakedown cruise. Better now than later.
Safe travels Sam, can't wait for more great videos.
You need to get a floating case and lanyard for the phones. Love the vids man! Keep it up for all us wanna be ex-landlubbers.
I worry when I train all summer for a long bike ride to top off the months of riding. Cannot imagine what it must feel like to leave to solo sail across the Atlantic. Great fun to watch you prepare...two steps forward and one occasionally back. But you keep on inspiring. Safe travels.
It's looking good brother! You're on your way.
Sam- you do more in a day than I do probably in a week😉 It is nice to stay busy. Like you I love everything sailn related
That 3D printer and sewing machine have proven to be a very good investment.
Thank you for keeping me entertained while wait at work and wonder if my boat has survived some recent storms.
Excited too! Thanks 😊
I hope you can stress less about the lost videos. Obviously we'd like them, but they're just videos and there will be more.

Somehow this man stays happy in the worst of situations

That’s what shake downs are for Sam. Be glad it happened near home and not further afield.
I think we got a brief peek at the new name signage on the side?
Fair winds, Sam!
You are awesome Brother
This is the plan from Sam I love it
I love this area. I almost accepted a teaching job in Bayboro when they offered it to me because of it.
Great to see Zoe back on board ! Boats turning into a Yacht ! CHEERS !!!
.....what's the difference.....? never knew there was a difference, looking forward to your response!
@@ackack612I think he was QUITE clear.
Do you need to read it again?
That's rough man. Glad you're okay.

Good luck Sam, be safe and most of all, have fun. 😏
I love your vidz, they are a great story of what Not to do to get ready for an atlantic crossing. GOOD LUCK and don't get hit by any hurricanes or large cruise ships.
A shake down means get to where you think you are ready and sail not I'm pretty ready and probably won't die. You dodged a bullet.
So other than the issues you mentioned, the shake down cruise went well. lol
Glad this stuff didn’t happen while you were in the middle of the Atlantic
Love the jacket 💪👏👏
glad to see Zoe
Good luck and smooth seas
Its going to be fine😮
Hello Sam thanks for sharing another good video it's a good thing those happen now close to shore so you can correct all of the issues sorry to hear about you losing your phone but at least you didn't go overboard anyway stay safe God bless you Sam and I love that new fridge you got that's nice anyways take care God bless be safe be waiting for you next video from Ray Garrett Roseville California USA
well jel lol ... after visting from the UK in 2010, I've had a long held dream to sail to Ocracoke :-)
Sorry about your phone. Can you print a case that would allow you to install a tether to your phone?
And is Zoey going with you on your crossing?
Zoe’s back!
Really looking forward to this seasons sailing !
Sam… what kind of iPhone back up connectivity will you have while sailing the Atlantic? Daily backups of your iPhone’s storage would be helpful.
Let's not forget that ferocious crab!
You’re doing a great job, best wishes for a safe and fun voyage. Are you taking Zoe?
If it's any consolation, I dumped my Nikon Z6 and a telephoto lens into a lake (not recovered) on my camping trip 2 weeks ago....
Fair Winds !!
lol the tour guide at the lighthouse got edited out
rip tour guide 😂
Gill makes great stuff.
Ohhh Catch phrase " Thats the plan from Sam!"
Take consolation from the fact that there isn't much to crash into while sailing the Atlantic.
Well, you say that...
RMS Titanic
RMS Olympic
SS Andrea Doria
Cheers from LA
Why not get something like a couple used Olympus Tuff cameras instead of relying on the iphones?
Are those 2 mirrors mounted above the transom? what for?
What plan did you get with the new iphone or are you planning to only use wifi when available?
We want to see you off! We are at the FMYB DT FM in a ‘84 Cal 27 are you actually leaving the 7th salty sams marina?
Hope you trust whoever you’re renting to.
You know, some very inteligent people are in to space or other stuff thats so out of touch with reality or computers, etc... but same got into sailing, which you can do. And hes into it too.
woow i really like the quality of the gopro, i think the video looks quite better
That’s why they call it a shake down cruise....
Surely your last iPhone backed up to the cloud?
Considering what you've done just in the past few months... a phone is a mighty small loss... easy fix. easier than what i've seen you do. PRESS ON MAN! PRESS ON!
Sorry to hear about your phone.
La Croix Water!
damn that’s sad to hear about your phone and the other damage, best of luck man!
When do you leave for your crossing?
Sweet Taco bell shirt! Is that from the 90s?
Last time I was this early, Noah had just laid the keel.
Losing a phone in the open ocean...on the bright side, nobody's going to hack the phone and steal your data. 🦀
